Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.
Rob_Feature's picture
Start:
2008-10-11 13:00 - 18:00 America/Detroit
Organizers:
Event type:
Training (free or commercial)

This event has now passed. Thanks for all who attended!

Come join us for a totally free Drupal 6 theming workshop. This casual training will walk through building a Drupal 6 theme from scratch, start to finish.

Your group leader will be building a basic theme for a company website based off a Photoshop mockup. He will build the theme and talk about what he's doing and why he's doing it. You can ask basic questions along the way but, due to the compressed timeline of the workshop, we won't stop the workflow to answer anything extremely complex (or go off in directions that don't pertain to the theme being built).

  • Where?
    St. Matthew Lutheran Church
    2040 South Commerce
    Walled Lake, MI
    Room 304 (use rear entrance)
    Google Map
  • Date: Saturday, October 11, 2008
  • Time: 1pm-6pm

We aren't providing any food/snacks, etc so bring your own. We will have wireless assuming everything goes as planned. However, we cannot promise that the wireless will be functioning.

Hope to see you there!

Record?

doulos12's picture

Wow, I really need this, but it's too far for me to go. Any plans to record this and post it somewhere, even on YouTube to save bandwidth bills?

Recording..

Rob_Feature's picture

I'd love to record this and make it available. However, because of the work it would take to record 5 hours of content including a screencast and video cam, I probably can't do it. If anyone else who attends wants to make it happen, it's fine with me. But to do this on top of doing the teaching is probably too much, considering it's a free/off-the-cuff workshop.

This workshop was originally going to be done as a free online screencast, but I couldn't find a good way to do a screencast on a free streaming service which showed the screen in good enough quality to follow along.

I am planning on attending... so...

connectedgeek's picture

I can record again if you want me too?? Maybe we can rig up something better this time?

Let me know!

Larry

Man, that would be awesome

DarrinRich's picture

Man, that would be awesome if you can record it. A little bit of a drive for me in CA. :)

That would be awesome

shavenyaknz's picture

Yeah I'd be stoked too if you could record it. It's a really long drive from New Zealand !

Definitely will be there

charliecheney's picture

This sounds awesome! It's 177 miles, but I'll be there for sure.
Thanks so much for doing this.

The only one?

kkelley's picture

I really want to go, but I am going to be out of the state that weekend. Is this ever going to be held again anywhere else.

Wonderful if someone can record this!

kjv1611's picture

If someone can record this - audio or video would be WONDERFUL! If you do, I'd love to get a copy when finished. It's definitely too far away for me (South Carolina).

:)

Argh!

Anthony Pero's picture

Any other weekend and I'm there... arghh! I'm gonna be in Grand Rapids for a worship conference, but I need to drive my wife back Friday night, and don't know that I can justify driving back up to Detroit on Saturday... Maybe I can still make it... I certainly want to.

Great to see an event

Great to see an event happening near my hometown. It will be nice to meet up with some others that use Drupal.

Live Broadcast?

ebrittwebb's picture

Any chance you could broadcast this live, instead of (or in addition to) capturing this in a videocast? I bet you'd get twice as many participants virtually.

Erik Britt-Webb

Broadcast?

kkelley's picture

I would love to see this broadcasted! I can't make it out there, but would deffinitly can do it virtually

The screen issue...

Rob_Feature's picture

I'm all for broadcasting this. We'll put it live at: http://geeksandgod.com/live

There are some issues I'll warn people about, though. First, we'll be using a church's network intenet connection. That means that:

  • The actual internet connection may or may not work. May or may not be reliable. I can't promise anything.
  • The network is fairly locked down, proxied, etc. Even if we can get a network connection, I can't promise the ports will be open to stream live video. (although it should be since it will just be streaming over port 80 to my knowledge of Mogulus)
  • Who knows if we'll have enough bandwidth to give a smooth stream.

The other big problem is actually being able to see the screen. I've researched a lot of ways and there's no way to broadcast the screen (showing what I'll be doing) out over a streaming service such as Ustream or Mogulus. Instead, the best we'll be able to do is film the projection screen with the camera. But, if Larry wants to handle the camera work, I'll hook up an HD cam and we'll stream it Live.

Streaming Video

kkelley's picture

Even if this does not work, is it possible to record what is going on? I am willing to pay for the disk it is placed on if that is possible

OK... here is what I know... :)

connectedgeek's picture

WebcamMax is good screen capture program for Windows; however, the file is raw AVI, so the file is quite large. Luckly I have a 500 GB hard drive :)

CAMTwist is a good screen display program and with Jing you can capture the screen too.

I will try and bring my Verizon card and UStream the whole thing on my Windows Laptop. Also, I can try and capture the whole thing on my MAC Book Pro like I did at the conference.

If anyone has any better ideas, please let me know.

Thanks,
Larry

Maybe someone can help you

SamRose's picture

Maybe someone can help you locate some kind of screensharing software? This could also let you record the session. I have sen things like http://www.yugma.com/ that can do this

Screen sharing and recording

mariajones05's picture

TurboMeeting by http://www.rhubcom.com/ lets you do screen sharing and make recordings of sessions. There product looked very solid when I used it. TurboMeeting is also capable of display up to four webcams at a time to show different presenters or questions from the audience.

In Demand

flickerfly's picture

Rob, I think it's safe to say that demand for this sort of thing is pretty high in the Drupal church community. :-)

TekSmith Camtasia?

kjv1611's picture

It may only be for Windows - not sure what OS will be used, but it works well. But unfortunately, it isn't free. It's rather steep - $300, for the current version. The program is called Camtasia.

Their cheaper program, Snagit ($30), will grab video, but I do not think it records audio with it... but I could do some more testing and see. Another option might be to use the cheaper version to record the video of the computer screen, and then capture the audio with another source (if the church records audio, that should be a simple option, assuming someone from their media/production dept/group would be there to help with that or whatever. If not, many MP3 players have line-in recording and microphone recording. In MP3 format, you can record quite a bit of audio with practically no space usage - WMA format will record smaller if need be...

I know we use Snagit at work, and Camtasia has been used by some with VERY good results.

Of course, for the audio, you'd need to run an audio line from whatever the broadcast source is. So if using the church sound system, they should have a way you could get a line off their sound mixer - such as an Aux Send if nothing else. That's what we use at our church (appx 125 members), and we've got a really tiny budget compared to many churches.

Hopefully offering that suggestion doesn't muddy the waters too much. :0) This would just be for recording - I'm not sure if it supports broadcasting/netcasting of any sort.

If Someone CAN Broadcast...

kjv1611's picture

If someone CAN broadcast it, I would do my best to capture the stream with whatever application on my end (would have to look and see what I have that would work, or what free one I could download). Then I could make that available for others later if on one else is able. I'd just need to know the details before it's a done deal - IF it is able to happen (broadcasting it).

A local recording method with/without the broadcasting would be best in my opinion, just in case there is some sort of network failure. That way, the information can still be helpful to everyone/anyone interested at a later time, as I'm sure not everyone will be "free" at the specified time, as we all have different schedules. I know my schedule is usually so tight that I'd have to look at it, pieces at a time, anyway. :0)

Screencasting isn't really the issue...

Rob_Feature's picture

I guess I should have explained better. Screencasting isn't really the issue...it's screencasting LIVE on the WEB that's the issue. I use screenflow and it's great, but I can't imagine trying to record for 5 hours straight. Maybe it'll do it, maybe i'll kill my system. But we can give it a whirl.

If we just recorded both video and the screencast successfully, then the issue becomes editing, compressing etc. Again, if Larry is willing to take this on, that's fine with me.

DimDim or WebEx?

ebrittwebb's picture

What about something like DimDim or WebEx, which is specifically designed for online web conferencing?

Erik Britt-Webb
drupal@ebrittwebb.com

GoToMeeting or TurboMeeting

mariajones05's picture

http://www.gotomeeting.com/ by Citrix and TurboMeeting by http://www.rhubcom.com/ are similar, but slightly better alternatives IMHO.

recording 5 hours strait...

kjv1611's picture

Now, I'd guess you'd probably take some break or two in the midst, right? If so, then you could split the files at the breaks, could you not? That might help a little both with giving your system a break, and with the editing, etc.

Carpool?

nonprofit's picture

Hey Bob, thanks for doing this!

Anybody interested in carpooling? I'm west of Chicago and would be happy to drive or ride.

Blessings!

Also like a copy

ecampbell's picture

I wish I could attend but my schedule doesn't allow for this trip. Like many others here I would love to get a copy after the fact if you do use screenflow or any other solution!

Live Steaming

connectedgeek's picture

http://www.connectedgeek.net/live

On Oct 11th, I will be streaming on this site, either on Ustream or on Mogulus.

Also, if I have the resources, I will stream to my hard drive and then upload to: http://geeksandgod.connectedgeek.net/node/8

So, please stay tuned!!

Hosting of the file...

kjv1611's picture

By the way, I don't have a separate Drupal site (yet) from my church's website, but I do have some semblance of a site I started way back when for computer work (just small stuff on the side).

I could help host the file there as well once you've gotten it uploaded to at least share the burden.

And if I did, it wouldn't be for marketing purposes, b/c as I said, there's pretty much nothing there now anyway - no time to really get to it... and besides, I probably will change that over to Drupal after all the other projects I'm working on. ;0)

The main page for that one is at gvlpc. It was just a static page designed in DreamWeaver MX, I believe was the version - already old, I know, but it still works. ;0)

In Toledo that weekend...

JE_Illustration-gdo's picture

I'll be in Toledo that weekend, and am unsure if I'll be going. Anyone in that area heading up there?

kjv1611, I'd like to get in touch with you... I usually us AV1611 as my screen names ;)

contact

kjv1611's picture

Sure. sorry too me so long to respond - didn't get around to looking at this again until just now.

Easiest way for now, probably is to go to my church's website, and click "Email...." I get all those emails initially, so I'll see it first thing.

The link above should take you strait to the contact page... I guess, let me know here if you can't contact me for some reason. I just started the transition from an old Frontpage-built site to the new one with Drupal about a month or two ago..

:0)

Wireless at the event.... ;0)

kjv1611's picture

From Original Post:

We will have wireless assuming everything goes as planned. However, we cannot promise that the wireless will be functioning.

Streaming Vid:

http://www.connectedgeek.net/live

On Oct 11th, I will be streaming on this site, either on Ustream or on Mogulus.

Please, folks, if you do go, and wireless is working... maybe keep the wireless activity to a minimum, so as to have less possibility of hick ups in the video streaming. Video takes more bandwidth than any other form of transfer in real time (to the best of my knowledge), so it'll probably need all it can get!

I could be wrong, so someone please correct me if that is inaccurate.

We had a great time

connectedgeek's picture

We had a great time yesterday!! Thanks again to Rob and Matt!! I took some pictures:

Later!

Thanks!

I would concur; this event was well worth attending. Thanks to Rob for hosting and Connectedgeek for recording. Blessings! -NP

Great Event

charliecheney's picture

Great event Bob, amazing really. It gave me a whole new understanding of Drupal, thank you so much.

When will you host it again? I know I would get just as much out of it a second time (probably more) and would gladly drive the four hours again to be involved. You're a great presenter and the interactivity from the audience really took it to another level. Really well done.

Thanks

Rob_Feature's picture

Thanks Charlie!
I'm glad you came out and learned alot. It's always tough to tell if it's helping people or not...so thanks for the feedback. I'd like to do more of this kind of thing in the future, but have no plans as of now.

This is awesome, thanks for

stephthegeek's picture

This is awesome, thanks for doing this and posting the video!

Are there larger versions of the images linked above on flickr? It would probably be helpful to post if so, since the code and details are hard to make out in that size.

Video Download

kjv1611's picture

So, did anyone get a copy of the video uploaded for download, or did it end up being too big? I tried looking here:
http://geeksandgod.connectedgeek.net/node/8 but the only link appeared to be bad.

PHP Not working?

kjv1611's picture

At this same site, as I listed above, when trying to see the list of video files from the Drupal Theme tutorial, here's all I see:

Videos for Free Drupal Theme Workshop

// $filelist = explode("\n",find .|sort);
$dirpath = "./files/freetheme/videos/";
$dh = opendir($dirpath);
while (false !==($file = readdir($dh))) {
$files[] = $file;
}
sort($files, SORT_STRING);
foreach ($files as $file) {
//Don't list subdirectories
if (!is_dir("$dirpath/$file")) {
//Truncate the file extension and capitalize the first letter
echo "". htmlspecialchars(ucfirst(preg_replace('/..*$/', '', $file))) ."
";
}
}
?>

Is there some problem on my end, possibly, or is there something missing on the server end for that code to display like that instead of actually run?

Or am I missing something altogether?

Sorry I missed it guys. But

JE_Illustration-gdo's picture

Sorry I missed it guys. But I had to attend the wedding rehersal and keep an eye on our son. Hope you do another event like this... maybe on the next one we could all put in some money for pizza or something... couple people bring 2 liters.

I don't want someone to go out of their way, but I'm willing to send some DVD disks if video was recorded and send some extra money for the burning of it.

Thank you very much Bob! Great presentation and content! I got what I went there for. Its so worth the trip accross the border on a Canadian Thanksgiving long weekend!

another thank you

avr's picture

bob (and everybody else who helped to make this happen)....

i'm super grateful that you took the time to do this AND to host it live. my wife thought i was totally crazy sitting at my computer and listening to you guys, but it was awesome.

i only started working with drupal a few weeks ago and then stumbled on your sites late friday night. this session brought a ton of clarification - i think that you saved me a month of searching forums by answering so many questions.

after this session, i was able to write a theme from scratch to replace a zen implementation. starting from scratch made a lot of my issues go away - because now i know exactly what's going on where.

thanks again!

avr

Sorry!!

connectedgeek's picture

http://geeksandgod.connectedgeek.net/node/8 is broken right now and won't be fixed until this weekend... Sorry. I need to enlist Bob, Matt or Micah to help me or anyone else who knows PHP better than me :)

It will be up soon... once again I apologize.

A Suggestion

jsheffler's picture

As an alternative to trying to automatically create links from filenames using PHP, I'd like to suggest that you just provide a list of the filenames that we could navigate to directly. That is, just tell folks that the files are named (for example) "files/freetheme/videos/file1.mp4", "files/freetheme/videos/file2.mp4", etc. That would be sufficient until you can work out the appropriate PHP. I, for one, would really appreciate that. Thanks!

ConnectedGeek Vid Stream Broken - Thanks for info

kjv1611's picture

I was just curious, myself, whether it was a known issue or not. I totally understand about getting stuck on things, as well as getting too busy to get everything done! ;0)

Thanks for your efforts, and of course Rob's efforts, and anyone else who was involved as well.
