Seattle Drupal Clinic 2011

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

I am posting to follow up on some discussion at SEADUG and get the ball rolling on organizing a clinic this year.

We would ideally like to have the clinic at least 3 weeks prior to the Summit which is Oct 14-16. I am going to propose some dates and some ideas about organizing below - please leave comments with your thoughts.

IMO we should try as best we can to do what we did last year as I think it went really well.

So, I think to start with we need to groups of volunteers, a group for organizing and a group for teaching- please indicate in your comment which fits you.

  1. Organizers contact the venue, set up eventbrite, coordinate food, recruit sponsors, line up roving drupaleers for day of, etc. I think one or two people can handle the arrangements leading to the clinic.
  2. Teacherswill lead the class. We should teach Drupal 7 and use the excellent work Jennifer did last year as a starting place and maybe have a look at this Acquia Doc about training. I think four people is the most we should have for teachers, 2 before lunch and 2 after.

I have ideas about dates and venue, but those are exactly the sorts of things the organizers should decide so I will leave that for now.

What do you think?

Yes, that would be great. What would be convenient for you? Thanks. Christopher

Sounds great! I'd be happy

Upcoming Intro Course

I would be glad to help with any administrative functions, don't have enough knowledge of Drupal to help on that end.

Organizing

nsenzee's picture

I'd be happy to help organize if it's 9-10, 9-17 or maybe 10-1. Can't do the 24th weekend but here we are talking dates. Also, happy to help with the other administrative functions as well.

Happy to help teach. Maybe a space.

doublejosh's picture

Happy to help teach. I've had to give a ton of intro level overviews for folks in the last few months.
Here is the prezi I use for new people on our team... http://prezi.com/fjqhy7hnjyrq/tableau-cms-intro
Could adapt this for a Drupal overview.

Also, can ask Tableau if some of our new main-floor offices could be made available?

Is there any central place for class ideas?

I'll fill in wherever you need me.

Just let me know what you need to get done and I'll pitch in.

I checked with work and can provide a space for the Clinic.
I'll be at SEADUG to talk details and see if that could work.

volunteer for teaching

setvik's picture

Looks like you may already have enough volunteers to teach, but just in case you need an additional teacher, I'd be happy to teach a class.

looks like the room at SeaDUG says Clinic dates are between 9/24 and 10/1

Planning meeting next week for people who would like to help, stay tuned...

Interpreters

WarrenK's picture

Please add to your list of Logistics items: Accessibility for the disabled. In my case, I will need an interpreter for the sessions. PSU has an office that provides these services at http://www.drc.pdx.edu/. I emailed them but got no response. I suspect they will work better with conference organizers.

Thanks!

Clarification

jdwalling's picture

Warren,
Are you requesting an interpreter for the Drupal Clinic in Seattle and the Drupal Summit in Portland? Does Portland State University offer services in Seattle?

Re: Clarification

WarrenK's picture

John,

Sorry. After I posted I realized your meeting was to plan next year's Seattle summit. No, PSU does not offer services in Seattle. We'll have to make other arrangements. Thanks for putting it on the agenda. Can you tell me who to contact in Portland that is responsible for logistics?

Warren

Clarification: PNWDS-PDX contacts

Updated curriculum

jhodgdon's picture

While I was away at DrupalCon etc. the past two weeks, I managed to update the curriculum from the last two years' clinics to Drupal 7 (and verify that it would work). I'm not sure what your curriculum plans are for this year, but anyway it might be useful:
http://poplarclass.com/steps-spokane-2011

I'm planning to have a 3-evening workshop in Spokane using this new curriculum -- three weeks starting Sept 19. I decided that doing it over 3 sessions rather than all in one day might lead to less glassy eyed stares. However, so far no one has signed up on EventBrite, so I'm not sure if I'll be doing it or not after all.

Anyway, good luck with the Seattle workshop!

Remote clinic?

VivianB's picture

Any chance your workshop in Spokane can be attended remotely by a person in Seattle - me - who can not attend the workshop in Seattle on 9/24 due to a work conflict? I reviewed your updated curriculum and it contains some hands-on experience that I need. I have done an installation and a lot of module work but need reinforcement that I taught myself correctly and additional instruction on theming, etc.

Thanks for considering!

Sorry...

jhodgdon's picture

I don't have an easy way to broadcast the 3-evening Spokane workshop to you, sorry! Though maybe I should talk to the Drupal Dojo folks and get it recorded... I'll post here if that is possible.

You can, of course, feel free to try the steps of the curriculum yourself, though some details may not be obvious without an instructor.

Interested in attending Spokane Event

hwasem's picture

I'm interested in attending the Spokane event since I can't make it to Seattle due to family conflicts. I'm working on approval and release time now. I'll be traveling from the Tri Cities. Do you think it will be running?

Building Web Sites with Drupal: A Hands-On Workshop for Beginners

When: 3 Mondays - September 19, September 26, October 3, 6 PM - 8:30 PM\
NOTE: This is a 3-session workshop! EventBrite doesn't seem to be able to handle making it look like that. Sorry!

Where: Strong Solutions, 1718 E. Sprague Avenue, Spokane, WA 99202
There is plenty of on-street parking at this location. http://jdstrong.com/

Details: http://poplarclass.com/home-spokane-2011

Nota bene: jhodgdon was the excellent instructor/organizer for the 2009 and 2010 Seattle Drupal Beginner Clinics.

Maybe Tri-Cities workshop?

jhodgdon's picture

Thanks jwalling for putting in the information... Traveling from the Tri Cities to Spokane for the workshop might not be too feasible, since it's on 3 successive Monday evenings instead of one long day. Sorry! I think this schedule will be better for most attendees, since a one-day workshop leaves people kind of information overloaded by the end of the day, but it does make it less attractive for someone far away to attend.

Another possibility would be that you could organize a one-day workshop in the Tri Cities, you could probably convince me (or perhaps one of the Seattle instructors) to drive down there and teach it. You would need to find a venue and take care of the publicity and sign-ups. Also I would need at least one (or possibly two, depending on how many attendees there were) experienced Drupal people to volunteer to help at the workshop (to rove around and answer questions).

So if you can round up 10 confirmed and committed people to attend the workshop (I suggest charging a small fee to gauge commitment), get a venue with good WiFi and a projector, and locate an experienced Drupal person to help out on the day of the workshop, let me know and we can talk about dates.

Need one more instructor

rlhawk's picture

Since ksenzee will be unavailable on September 24, we need a replacement instructor to join the other three of us. Any volunteers?

I can help: TA and/or logistics

aenw's picture

I just found out that I'll be available to help out on the 24th. So tho' it's getting quite close to the event, I'd like to volunteer to help out.
I just added my name to the wiki page. I can help TA and/or with logistics. I can definitely be there from 9 - 1, and may be able to stay later.
I was able to attend BarCamp in 2010 and got a lot out of it. (I was the one in the green powerchair.) I now have time to be involved in SeaDUG and would be happy to help out with this.

I'll sign up for the Google group, too, and look for info there.

Drupal Clinic needs volunteers

jdwalling's picture

Cross Posted from Sept meeting

  • Drupal Clinic volunteers needed Saturday Sept 24 9am-5m
Volunteers can work shifts so you don't have to commit to the whole day.
Add your name to the SeaDUG wiki page at
    Drupal Clinic Planning 2011 - http://groups.drupal.org/node/171289
B-1. Volunteers needed on day of Clinic - teaching assistants and logistics
B-2. Volunteers needed for A/V capture - videographer plus uSteam wrangler

If you have Drupal web builder experience you can volunteer to be a roving teaching assistant. As students raise their hands, you can give them one-on-one assistance while the teacher continues with the presentation. We plan to have a detailed Curriculum online here http://drupalkata.com/seattle-drupal-clinic/seattle-drupal-clinic-2011-c...

If you are not an experienced Drupal user, you can volunteer for Logistics support, posting signs, entrance monitor for security, attendee sign ins, food and coffee setups, etc.

Eric Johnston volunteered A/V equipment setup but he can not stay for Clinic. If you have some A/V skills you can be the operator without having to provide the equipment.
(9/16: We have one videographer volunteer. If you can be a camera assistant while being TA or logistics assistant, add your name.)

We also want to capture the screen presentations via uStream. We need someone to wrangle that process. http://www.ustream.tv/
