Drupal Johannesburg meetup in March or April
I'm wanting to start organising the next Drupal Johannesburg meetup, to be held in March/April 2009.
The last meetup was a great success, with more than 25 people in attendance.
I'd like to get some feedback from people about what they'd like to see/do at the next meetup.
My personal vision for this meetup would be a series of lightning talks to kick off with, and then free time for deeper discussions and just being social. Details:
I'd like to get more people involved this time. One way of doing this is to use a "Lightning talk" format (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightning_Talk), see ignite(http://ignite.oreilly.com/) and http://perl.plover.com/lt/osc2003/lightning-talks.html - each presenter has 5 minutes to talk on anything. This sounds like a really great way to cover a lot of different topics, get to know people a bit better, and if held at the beginning of the event would enable better social interactions/learning/teaching/networking etc. and more in-depth discussions afterwards.
Some examples of topics (taken from the lighting-talks site):
Here are some suggestions:
- Why my favorite module / add-on package is X.
- I want to do cool project X. Does anyone want to help?
- Successful Project: I did project X. It was a success. Here's how you could benefit.
- Failed Project: I did project X. It was a failure, and here's why.
- Heresy: People always say X, but they're wrong. Here's why.
- You All Suck: Here's what is wrong with our community.
- Call to Action: Let's all do more of X / less of X.
- A Funny Thing happened to me on the Way to the Mailing List / Newsgroup / Web Forum.
- Wouldn't it be cool if X?
- Someone needs to do X.
- Wish List
- Why X was a mistake.
- Why X looks like a mistake, but isn't.
- What it's like to do X.
- Here's a useful technique that worked.
- Here's a technique I thought would be useful but didn't work.
- Why add-on package X sucks.
- Comparison of similar add-on packages X and Y.
- Why we should be paying more attention to X.
- My Favorite Feature
If you are keen to participate, please post a comment in this thread - if you want to, you're welcome to indicate the topic of your talk, in your comment, although duplicates shouldn't be a major problem.
We normally hold these at Obsidian Systems (http://www.obsidian.co.za/contact) so will probably do it there, pending confirmation. If anyone has another venue they feel would be appropriate for this or future meetings, let me know.
Regarding the date: I expect that the end of March will be a better option than April, as there are lots of public holidays in April, including Easter, so people are more likely to be away then.
All comments and suggestions are welcome!
There is a Drupal Johannesburg group on Facebook, for those that don't lurk around the drupal groups site much: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=20838789312 which I'll also use to add more details about this event (although at the moment it appears unavailable).

I'm in!
I'm very keen, and my weekends are a bit limited. What about running a multi-option-vote poll on dates? (i.e. let people indicate all the dates they can make and then pick the one with the most acceptance votes).
Obsidian is moving at the end of March, so that is available till mid-March-ish. I would not recommend going to the new premises in the month or so after the move :)
Adrian will be here, returning from DrupalCon round Tuesday 10/Wednesday 11 March. I'm sure he will go home before the weekend, so doing something Wed evening the 11th might be a good idea (I can't make the 12th).
Anton
Thanks for the venue offer again
Hey Anton - I like the idea of Wednesday evening, 11 March. It will probably make it difficult for people in Pretoria, but we can maybe do a weekend one the next time. Of course it would also be cool to hear from Adrian if he'd be up for it. Or anyone else who's been to DrupalCon.
I'll let other people suggest alternative dates, and we can then look at a poll once we have other options.
Charles.
my dates are a bit in flux
I might only be returning on the 11th.
Will know more once i've actually booked the tickets.

The future is so Bryght, I have to wear shades.
April for me
Hi I'm in, april is cool for me, like the idea of the poll.
Personally i would like to go through either Theming or perhaps do some sample clients, e.g. e-commerce site etc and the go through setting it up and selecting modules and why they are used.
Thanks
Rob
Have your say!
Hey Rob - thanks for your input.
Let's wait to see if anyone else offers up an opinion as to date and content.
Because the venue we normally use is not going to be available from mid march, probably until May, I think we'd better get a meetup in round about Anton's suggested date of the 11th.
I would still lean towards the shorter format, just to try something different from what we've done before, and to also allow more people to get a chance to share/participate/ask questions.
But, I'm not against your suggested e-commerce demo, and if someone's willing, then let's consider it. I've no doubt a lot of people would be interested in this, including me.
Please could anyone else who's interested make their opinion heard in the comments.
Charles.
DrupalMeet date
Unfortunately Adrian is only arriving on the 12th the morning and leaving the Friday evening and I can't make the evening of the 12th. So looks like we're not going to be able to get Adrian at the meet.
Given that, I'm still keen for the 11th the evening, my weekends are a bit full right now.
I've been reading about the lightning talks and I'm very keen. The format sounds like phun.
I am all for the 11th/12th.
I am all for the 11th/12th. :) Although, I might also be in Cape Town then... if not, Ill be there ready to help out where Im needed. :P
Perhaps for a start, we should go with something like: My Favourite Module right now is... that way, people will get an idea of who uses what, enjoys what and has knowledge in what area... that would serve as a really good way forward for future meetups where you might want to consider someone doing a demonstration on a specific module that everyone expresses an interest in...?
I would like to attend this,
I would like to attend this, but am sans wheels. Next time.
Would like to attend: time?
Hi,
Would love to attend the meeting. What time does it start?
Patrick
Starts at 18:30
Hey Patrick - we'd love you to join us!
Starts at 18:30, I'd imagine the talks will start promptly at 19:00 once everyone's battled through the joburg traffic.
