Start:
2009-03-11 18:30 - 22:00 Africa/Johannesburg
Organizers:

The next Drupal Johannesburg meetup is scheduled to take place at 18:30 on Wednesday 11 March 2009, at Obsidian Systems, Randpark Ridge, Johannesburg (http://www.obsidian.co.za/contact).

Please bring anything you'd like to drink/eat (or eat beforehand).

As already mentioned (http://groups.drupal.org/node/19067), we want to get more people involved so we're going to be allowing everyone who comes 5 minutes to chat about whatever it is in Drupal that they want to. The idea behind this is to spark off better social interaction/learning/teaching/networking/etc. - by telling other people stuff like (what you're passionate about, the kind of projects you've been working on, what you would like to learn etc.), the door will be open for others with similar interests/projects/issues/skills/questions/answers to connect with you...

To keep things simple, we're not going to be using a projector, so you won't have to worry about slide presentations and any technology failures. It's just going to be talking. For more info on the "lightning talk" format, see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lightning_Talk, http://ignite.oreilly.com/ and http://perl.plover.com/lt/osc2003/lightning-talks.html

Some examples of topics:

  1. Why my favorite module / add-on package is X.
  2. I want to do cool project X. Does anyone want to help?
  3. Successful Project: I did project X. It was a success. Here's how you could benefit.
  4. Failed Project: I did project X. It was a failure, and here's why.
  5. Heresy: People always say X, but they're wrong. Here's why.
  6. You All Suck: Here's what is wrong with our community.
  7. Call to Action: Let's all do more of X / less of X.
  8. A Funny Thing happened to me on the Way to the Mailing List / Newsgroup / Web Forum.
  9. Wouldn't it be cool if X?
  10. Someone needs to do X.
  11. Wish List
  12. Why X was a mistake.
  13. Why X looks like a mistake, but isn't.
  14. What it's like to do X.
  15. Here's a useful technique that worked.
  16. Here's a technique I thought would be useful but didn't work.
  17. Why add-on package X sucks.
  18. Comparison of similar add-on packages X and Y.
  19. Why we should be paying more attention to X.
  20. My Favorite Feature
  21. I'd like to connect with people who are involved in or interested in the following...

Please spread the word and invite anyone who you think would be interested, whether they already know Drupal or not.

Thanks again to Obsidian and to Anton de Wet for the venue. Map available here: http://www.obsidian.co.za/contact

So, how was it? Wish I was there! Any links to what was discussed?

It was a good meetup

Had about 15 people, although not enough new people.

I'll post a summary of what was discussed when I get a moment.

drupal.co.za

Very disappointing that it's so poorly run. I tried to type a comment in the RTE (TinyMCE, I think) and my text just ran over the edge and disappeared. Sort it out, and improve the design - delimit your spaces. Would be good to have a SA Drupal site.

Could you explain what you mean here?

We're open to any suggestions as to how to improve meetups, but if you don't give reasons why you think it's poorly run, there's not much we can do, can we? Were you at the meetup?

What site are you talking about here when you say "Sort it out"? You need to understand that all local drupal initiatives are volunteer based and people do what they can with the limited time and resources they have available, so some things may not always be perfect. Criticisms are a welcome way of improving things, but you'll need to explain yourself a bit more, and change the way you approach it. In my opinion, telling volunteers to "sort it out" won't get you anywhere, and shows a lack of understanding of how open source works.

You're referring to the drupal.co.za site

Aah, I see now that you're referring to the Drupal.co.za site, so disregard my comments about the meetups.

We need more infomation

If you could give us more information about problem it would help a lot. What operating system and browser are you using? Also what version of the browser.

If you could include a link to a screenshot of the problem as you see it, that would help as well.

Thank you for volunteering to help fix it!

I'm not sure if you're refering to drupal.co.za or the meetup.

In both cases your help in improving things will be appreciated.

A good client of me once taught me something very valuable. He said: "Don't bring me problems, bring me solutions"

If you approach the things you do with this attitude things get easier! :)
