First Drupal SoCal Meetup

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Start:
2006-12-10 16:00 - 18:30 America/Los_Angeles

I am initiating the first ever meetup for Drupal developers in Southern California.

Time: Sunday, December 10, 4pm PST

Place: Starbucks in the city of Orange on Glassel and Chapman (the Circle of Orange)

Directions: map 101 East Chapman Ave.; Orange, CA
It's a Starbucks/Wells Fargo building on the northeast corner of the circle.
Parking in the circle is limited; you may have to park further down Glassel.

What to bring: nothing is required. A few dollars for a coffee and a laptop to connect to the net are suggested. (The wifi is free.) Other than that, bring your enthusiasm and ideas for discussion.

What we might talk about: things that we each have developed in Drupal, ideas for people using Drupal professionally (and networking), helping each other with finding a way to get Drupal to do what we want it to do, perhaps even some bug-hunting in the Drupal 5.0 beta.

So is this official? You are going to see me there at 4pm on Sunday Dec 10, along with other people who come, that's about as official as it can become. You can contact me at (714) 686-6799 if you get lost or something. Or at peterkirby@gmail.com to talk about it ahead of time. Otherwise I hope to see you there. Please RSVP via the 'sign up' functionality of this event.

Talk about microformats?

mikey_p's picture

I'm reading about this and have joined the group but I'm still not sure I understand it fully, but it sounds like a brilliant idea. Maybe someone could come prepared to explain this or something?

You're not the only one

From what I can gather, there's still a lot of figuring out that needs to be done with Microformats (how Drupal supports them, how they play with other modules like CCK, etc.). The Microformats group is probably the best place to stay in the loop (and contribute).

What other things should this group accomplish, build and/or learn? For what it's worth, here's an overview of where I've been trying to go. Possibly there's some common ground for some regional collaboration?

Oh yeah - whose for having the next meeting in LA?

Guess what y'all - there's a lot interesting Drupal activity going on that people don't know about...a LOT more about to happen.

Will try to lay out some meeting notes a bit later. Great meeting the other chaps who showed up!

Next meet in LA

Since 2 of the 3 attendees (hey, it's a start!?!) made the trek from LA, majority rules - we're thinking possibly the Farmer's Market in a month or so? We also kicked around some ideas such as podcasts, videocasts, technology/live music events... Think we're in for a fun new year!

Also coudn't make it (kid's Xmas issues) but would very much like to try again in a month or two ...

A few show notes

gusaus's picture

Seriously think we should record the next meetup - lot's of interesting topics and great ideas tossed 'round - largely in the area of arts, music, the industry and how drupal is, or could be used. Here are a few random recollections and/or possible action items -

 • although la/so cal probably has the best indie talent pool around, myspace is pretty much the most cutting edge site that artists are using - music-centric installations and distribution profiles should offer more productive tools, but it's going to take a lot of work getting the tools out to the artists
 • learned that a few major labels and bands are using drupal - think this is only the beginning
 • industry needs to better embrace open source, open standards, and no drm (wherever possible)
 • much interest microformats, 3rd party apis and all the other goodness that will enable drupal to mashup with external sites/services for things like audio, video, events, ticketing, and e-commerce
 • trying to figure out the overall dynamic of the drupal community - where are the best places to learn - most efficient ways to communicate and collaborate
 • touched on the drupal association and how companies that derive business value from drupal contribute back (or could a better job) - lots of creative funding/fundraising ideas for projects and core development (advertising/sponsorships; fundraisers with live music; artists donating and/or kicking back a portion of sales to fund development of tools that will help them in the end)
 • this may be a good project in which to collaborate
 • some upcoming podcasts, radio shows, and live events in the works
 • lot's of other stuff i'm not thinking of right now...

there's a bunch of sites, drupal groups, and various links we talked about (starbucks did NOT have free wifi), but i'm thinking we can add those in delicious and/or a wiki - hope the other fellas can chime in and/or drop me an email direct with your contact info

let's start setting the agenda for the next one...

meeting #2

schavester's picture

I propose a meeting at Philippe’s French Dip in Downtown Los Angeles. It is a central site, right off the intersection of four major Southern California freeways, has separate seating areas upstairs—”conference room” does not do justice to these brick-walled rooms with stools and sawdust on the floor, and is just a slice of plain ole’ good Los Angeles fun. Perhaps the week between Xmas & New Years? The 30th (Sat.) or 31st (Sun)?

Map

Wikipedia entry

sounds good to me!

patrickfgoddard's picture

Great place, that Philippe's. 30th would probably be better for me. Tho, i'm off the week b/w xmas and nye, so I can meet during the week, too.

Not sure if I'll be around

gusaus's picture

I'll be out of town 'till the 29th, and there's a possibility that I won't be around for the weekend. The following week/weekend look better for me.
