Updating core with drush - good idea or fraught idea?

jdwalling's picture
jdwalling - Tue, 2012-01-10 23:29

I am looking into updating drupal core with drush.
"drush up drupal" updates core without updating modules which seems safer/saner than "drush up" which updates modules with core.
Can batching drush save you from update hell?
Bring your tips to the seadug meeting next Thursday Jan 19.

Can present if topics are of interest

mackm - Wed, 2012-01-11 02:26

I've recently completed a lodging availability feature for the new San Juan Islands Visitor's bureau site I'm building (beta at www.swiftsureimarketing.com .) It required solving a few somewhat interesting problems that other might encounter some time (I'm sure this is old-hat for some of you though). I'd be happy to present them if there is interest:

Solutions:

  • Schedule slow running tasks (scraping hotel websites for availability) to run regularly, but asynchronously using D7s cron queue. Update the DB using node_save.

  • Build views to display hotels that are "not booked" during a specified period without storing a row per day per hotel (only record booked days.) By catching and "inverting" the SQL coming out of the exposed filter.

  • Build custom form in a block.

  • Validate custom form output then feed it to the a view using the exposed filter syntax so the view builds my queries (which then get inverted..)

I also built a very simple ad rotator that rotates N advertisements through locations on M pages fairly - rotating once a day so as not to interfere with cacheing (very simple).

I'm happy to present any or all of these you think might be of interest. Probably take 4-5 minutes each.

Mack

Presentation proposal

rlhawk - Thu, 2012-01-12 18:04

I've written a module based on comments from the discussion I initiated last month about maintaining lists of featured content and whether "Promoted to Front" could (or should) be employed for that purpose. If there's time, I'd love to give a short demo and get more feedback.

Probably won't make DUG, but I can be there for drinks after...

Hey Guys,

I'm going to be headed up to Seattle tonight. I have stuff in Portland until about 5:00, so I won't be in Seattle until about 8:00, but I was thinking I'd stop by and grab a beer.

Hopefully I'll see you at Cactus!

I wouldn't assume you will

GregoryHeller - Thu, 2012-01-19 18:19

I wouldn't assume you will get to seattle from portland in 3 hours tonight. Seattle is a frozen mess. There is a strong chance that we will be canceling the DUG and the post DUG refreshments at Cactus.

I might suggest not even trying to get to seattle tonight. The areas south of us have been hit harder than we have from what I've heard.

Love you guys, but

WarrenK - Thu, 2012-01-19 17:34

not enough to drive down & back from Anacortes on roads likely to have 1/4 to 1/2" of ice.

Meeting tonight?

I take it the meeting is still on for those that can make it?
Currently the weather prediction seems to be that for travel in the central city, by bus or car, will be okay by the evening commute. I canceled the class I teach this evening, because many of my students come from all over the area. So I can take advantage of the opportuningt o make it this month, for once.

I'm thinking given the

I'm thinking given the deteriorating weather conditions, we should cancel the DUG tonight. I have no intention of leaving capitol hill. The streets up here are terrible, as are the sidewalks. There are some folks in IRC right now, and we can talk about it there. But suffice to say, I will not be there, and Josh Kopel has also said he will not be there.

I'm committed if others want to come tonight

mackm - Thu, 2012-01-19 18:58

I'm down from the island and staying overnight anyway. So if others do want to brave the roads (they are rough now, but I'm making it around), I'll be there and prepared to present couple things.

Question Board

Ice everywhere, don't travel today!

brizone - Thu, 2012-01-19 22:33

We have 1/2" of ice coating EVERYTHING out here in West Seattle, and I've got to believe Rainier Valley and everything else South and East of me is hosed as well. I don't know just how far North this extends (cause there's no way I'm driving in this mess), but it sounds like the snow is kicking up in Shoreline again now too, as of an hour ago.

It's not worth it, there's already two dead people out there from falling limbs alone...

We're calling it due to snow

GregoryHeller's picture
GregoryHeller - Thu, 2012-01-19 23:17

We're calling it due to snow and slush and ice! Don't come down to Amazon tonight. we will not be there. The roads are too messy. We will be on a google+ hangout. look for Rick Hawkens, or Gregory Heller on google+

Google Hangout questions...

hemant_saraf - Fri, 2012-01-20 01:08

I was checking how to find and join the hangouts... read this,

"Join a hangout

Joining a hangout that's already going on is easy. But you'll typically only know about the hangout if you were invited to join (either explicitly or because you're in a circle that was invited).

If you're invited to a hangout, several things will happen:

You'll see a post in your stream that a hangout is going on, with a button that says, Join this hangout.
You'll receive a notification that you've been invited to a hangout.
If you go to start a new hangout, you'll see the other hangouts that are going on that you've been invited to.
If you were individually invited and signed in to Chat, you'll receive a message with a link to the hangout. This isn't the case if more than 25 people were invited.

If you weren't invited to a hangout, you could still enter if someone shares the hangout URL with you.

When you enter a hangout, you'll see the current participants, broken down according to who is in your circles and who isn't. This way you don't have to hang out with anyone you don't like or don't know.

If no one is hanging out right now, you can start your own and invite people to join you!"

Wonder if you plan to share the link of your hangout.... I have searched and added you to my circle... however not sure if the hangout started by you will be visible to me if I am NOT in YOUR CIRCLE...

thanks,
Hemant
