After hours: After the meetup, it is typical for many of us to meet at a local restaurant or pub for additional Drupal networking. We will post the venue info prior to the meetup; if you have a suggestion, please leave a comment.

AGENDA:

6pm-7pm
* LA DRUPAL Contrib Lab - open lab for people bringing their laptops and looking to get help with a Drupal related problem.
* LA DRUPAL Mentors Lab - come meet with your mentors in person before the meetup starts.
* Lightning Talk prep - need help getting a lightning talk together, show up to the pre-meetup lab and we can help!
* Early Networking - looking to chat with folks before the meetup begins, this is your chance.

7pm-9pm
* Main presentation - Ashok Modi & Mike Stewart (both core contributors) will go over in detail the latest contributions their collaborated efforts brought to us all by helping fix Drupal Core!
* Lightning Talks - Drupal Module Crushes + Heartbreaks - come share your latest module crushes! Free "sweethearts" candy for those who do.
* Users Helping Users - bring up a question to the crowd and see how they can help you overcome your latest Drupal roadblock.
* Raffle prizes
* Job announcements
* Networking - bring your business cards

9pm-Late
* Drupal After Dark - hang with the community for a drink or bite to eat, after the meetup.

About our presenters: Ashok Modi & Mike Stewart

These two contributors have a lot to share with our local community about how their recent collaboration directly contributed code back to Drupal core. If you are interested in how these Ninjas and others are helping us all by making Drupal better, come to the meetup and see what the latest updates to Drupal will contain (their code!).

Attend online

Can't make it to the meetup in person? Click the Google+ Hangout link at our group home page to jump into the meeting from the comfort of wherever you may be. http://groups.drupal.org/la (located in the top left box)

Notes:

  • Job Announcements: if you wish to announce a job opening, please contact one of the organizers before the meetup so we know to expect you. (important note: out of respect for our host, please do not solicit their employees for jobs)
  • Raffle Prizes - every attendee has a chance to win one of our awesome prizes!
  • Group networking and hanging out. Bring your business cards.

Miscellaneous Info

Parking
There is on-street parking and a dedicated parking structure under the library building that costs $1 per hour (make sure you get the library to validate).

Come Early
The meetup begins at 7pm but the doors sometimes open a little earlier (6:00pm) for eating, meeting, open lab time, and Users Helping Users; which is a chance for members of the community to help and be helped by others with whatever questions and problems they're having with Drupal. Please note that while Users Helping Users is not designed to be a replacement for professional consulting from Drupal experts, there are plenty of Drupal pros who attend our meetups so be sure to bring your business cards or resume.

We want your feedback!
During the meetup, we'll be gathered in the #drupal-la IRC channel and all are welcome to join us. The event organizers will try to incorporate messages from Twitter for feedback or questions that mention @ladrupal or use the #ladrupal hashtag.

Presenters / Lightning Talks
If presenting, be sure to bring your laptop, power adaptor, and display cables... and whatever else you need.
Lightning talks are 5 minute presentations from attendees. They tend to be less formal -- and there are no questions during the talk (not enough time). People can ask you all their questions during the networking session. Consider doing a lightning talk if you’re new or planning to present for the first time. It'd be great if you have a lightning talk that fits with the evening's theme!
As always, please feel welcome to leave a comment below and let others know what you'd like to present ahead of time.

I just wish there was some way the word could have gone out... maybe an email list or something.

E-mail list = the "Sign up" button

I'll talk with the other organizers about making that happen better, if it happens again, but to be clear we did blast an email to all of those who signed up for the event through GDO (the "sign up" button under each event node). Folks signed up on meetup.com got the email as well. The email went out a little after 4pm because we were scrambling to find a new venue quickly.

A very different meetup in terms of atmosphere this time - was a lot of fun! I wanted to just mention 2 modules that came out of the talking regarding internationalization / localization from last night before I forget.

  • Localization client: This was the module used on the Zimmer Twins to translate content any interface strings that were translatable on the page (including any system messages that pop up). You go to a page on your site, click on a button for translations at the bottom of the page, and you can dynamically change up the string and save it. The module also gives the added option to send the translation up to localize.drupal.org (or not if you are doing a set of translations that are unique to the site)
  • Translation template extractor: We'd used a module similar to this for the Youth Venture website. We had a ton of translations to do and doing it via the interface was a no-go. This module should allow you to export all translatable strings for a given module / theme (I think you could probably do all as well though expect it to take a LONG time).
