OG for Interactive Church Ministries Brainstorm Meetup

Rob_Feature's picture

This is the official first step to a future get together where we'll discuss how to more effectively use Organic Groups for interactive ministry groups on a church website.

I want to lead an in-person group in Detroit and pair it with an online live video/chat where we'll all talk (probably for a few hours) about how to better use OG on church websites. Organic Groups is a great starting point for allowing ministries to gather online, but it's not ideal, is harder to use ,and has some problems. Please note that this will not be an OG training! We will not talk about how to use OG, theme it, etc...we'll simply talk about what it does and how to improve it.

Here's a "off the top of my head" agenda:

  • Talk about the concept of online ministry outside of the Drupal context. Talk about, in a perfect world, ministries would do online, how it would function, what would be helpful or not, etc. Basically, we pain the 'perfect picture' of online ministry groups.
  • Define the current state of OG. How it's currently working, what it can do, etc. The purpose is to clear up or enlighten any dark corners where OG may be doing things that not everyone knows about. It is this part that will help define the problem/limitations of OG for ministries
  • Talk about OG add-on modules. What's out there that people have used. What works well and what doesn't. How does it advance some of the main problems we want to solve? Between this and the previous step we should have a fairly full scope of the state of OG for churches
  • Create a general checklist of what exists in OG to solve these problems (in the first step) and what does not. We should be able to define what parts of OG are missing, need to be altered, or need to be developed.
  • Finally, we'll look at individual components of OG...the stock menus, Views integration, and more to see where we could expand OG without doing custom development.
  • In the end, hopefully we'll have a clearer state of OG and have some solid ideas on how to improve it or configure it to work well with ministries.

I'm open to anyone who may want to host this event. I'm trying to get a venue in the metro detroit area, but if you have one that has stable internet for the video broadcast, please speak up. I'll post this as an event once we get day/time confirmed.

Great idea - Love to participate

Thanks for spearheading this. It's a great idea and I'd love to participate. I'll have to do it online. What video/chat system do you think you'll use?

I've been thinking for a while that Organic Groups gives us a great set of tools, but we need to come up with clear, appropriate use cases. Then create easy to use, streamlined interfaces that meet our needs. If not simplified and customized, it's just a whole bunch of functionality that doesn't get adopted by our church groups.

Ideas for Agenda:
--Discuss Purpose, Goals of online ministry
(Example: I believe one goal should be to increase real, true, deep relationships that go beyond virtual. Functionality Implication: Easy to organize in-person meetups, etc.)

--Adoption - Talk about barriers to churches/church members adopting and using the online groups. Discuss ways to get users to overcome those barriers and how we should change our approach to alleviate the barriers.

Competitve Analysis

Maybe we could assign various people to do some "competitive analysis" of other online community software (such as the Zondervan/Mars Hill http://www.onthecity.org/)

At the meetup they could quickly present pros/cons/good features.

UX improvement module

I just posted this module which simplfies the UX for OG registration.

Although it includes specific functionality for CiviCRM, it should work fine without it also, just as a simple OG enhancement:

Changing name "groups" to "ministries"

microsyskl - Fri, 2009-09-25 04:35

i have begun to implement organic groups in our church website. They seem to be working well and I like the way I can manage specific access to specific sections of the site by assigning users to groups.

HERE'S MY QUESTION....
I wish to change the name "groups" in my breadcrumbs and all other locations on the site to "Ministries". I have managed to change some of them in VIEWS, but the breadcrumb labels still remain, along with tabs in admin view...

1) Is there any harm in me changing the labels in VIEWS? Will it break any links?
2) Anyone know how to, if i even can, change name on other locations such as breadcrumbs?

Somewhere in her posts about setting up a site for her church, Karen told how to change "book" or "story" to "page." I'll bet you could follow her pattern to do the same with "Ministries."

Interesting thought.

Try path, global_redirect, menu_breadcrumb

Hi,
The menu_breadcrumb module will change the breadcrumbs to whatever name you have for the menu item that points to your groups page.

If you want to change the url, you can create an alias with the path module. Also the global redirect module will ensure that if people go to the old path, it will immediately redirect to the new one.
