Howdy folks,
It is about time for Koumbit to host another Drupal meetup. As usual, there are tons of interesting developments in the community to talk about. Personally, I'd enjoy a conversation about the present and future architectures for feature development and sharing. There's already a lot of working code out there but, IMO, there is also lot of redundancy and no clear path yet for the community.
There's Panels 3 (with import/export), Spaces & Context (with import/export and "feature server"), Aegir, Buzzr and plenty more. All these projects aim to simplify highly complex tasks and thus have important implications on how Drupal shops will build and maintain websites, and on what the average Jane will/won't be empowered to do. To me these tools are as transformative as CCK was when it was introduced. Unfortunately unlike CCK, which landed on the scene as the uncontested replacement for flexinode (the first-gen attempt at atomising nodes), both Panels and Spaces/Context, for example, are credible alternatives which appear to be targetting highly overlapped use-cases.
So what are the strengths and weaknesses of each? Where is this all headed? Are users going to get caught in the middle? Are we witnessing the birth of an significant cleavage in the community and, if so, are there strategies that can avoid this? Either way, sooner or later, we'll all be forced to make some touch choices and I'm interested in any/all insights that can help smooth the way forward.
So come one, come all... Wednesday 15th at 18:00 in Koumbit's offices:
6833, avenue de l'Épée
Bureau 308
Montréal (Québec)
See you then!
Omar

I started documenting some of this but...
.... then realised that it wasn't going to be easy/quick to boil it down in writing without cutting out too much of the important stuff. I'd be happy to do an overview of what I know of these projects... and perhaps we can prepare some notes during the meetup that we could share back with the community. ... Oh and there's at least another project that should be added to our list of deployment solutions: the "deployment" module (d.o/project/deploy).

Intrusting
Parfait, j'y serais:)
I would love to demo aegir again
I would love to demo aegir again if people are interested. The new stuff I haven't demoed yet is the migration stuff (upgrading sites between drupal versions easily), which is the main hallmark of the 0.2 release that was just kicked out the door. I can also talk about the upcoming exciting features that will be coming up in the next months.
Just let me know if you want to hear about all this (sorry you can't come webchick :)...
Panels, spaces, and aegir... oh my!
At least a few of us from Evolving Web should be able to make it.
Looking forward to seeing more of the Koumbit gang.
Cheers,
Alex
In Algiers
for the rest of this week (weddings!)
I seem to have the worst luck when it comes to these meet-ups. Looking forward to August, I hope!
Best of luck,
Fahim
p.s. heya Koubit, does the title of this post infer free Kool-Aid? yum!!
Good morning
How many people are expected to attend? Thank you.

Well, we have 14 attendees
Well, we have 14 attendees at this point, so I expect around 8-10 people to actually come, maybe more! It would be great to get 15 people here too, but we're attracting less people in Parc-Extension than old montreal... ;)
Number of people
Privet Alex, kak dela?
The last 2 had 15 people or so, but they were at a different location (our office in the Old Port), so there might be a whole different crowd this time.
BTW I'd love to chat with you briefly about those e-business credits.
Cheers,
Alex Dergachev
I'll be there
...nothing suprising about it I guess, since I work in this office. :)
I'll be there...
Looks like I can actually make this one.
Interested in hearing about Panels3 but also about 'right here right now' solutions...
Happy to talk about http://www.earley.com, re-launched last week as a drupal site with advanced views, ubercart, and a lot of blocks...
A little overview of the things we talked about...
A few overview of the things we talked about...
that's all i can remember right now, sorry if i missed interesting discussions, feel free to add up.. :)

Great evening
I really enjoyed this meet-up, and learned a lot too. Looking forward to the next one (and Paris!).
What I learned
As always, it was great to chat with other Drupal folks.
Things I personally learned:
apache2-mpm-itk is an alternative to mod_suphp (which for the record is what our partner May First/People Link uses for its mass hosting).
drush can talk to SVN! (I've never run 'drush help dl' before)
See you all next time.

August
Hey everyone,
We're a Drupal shop as well in Montreal and we'd love to host the August meeting (we're at Guy metro), ahead of Paris DrupalCon (who's going ?). We have a pretty cool terrasse and a projector that we can even install there. We'd like to demo our SuperCron module as well as (hopefully) our upcoming SuperSearch (search, with role-sensitive cached results, indexing at more than 10x the speed of search.module). Would people be free on the 11th ?
Probably Maybe
Just bought my Drupalcon ticket.
11th is good for me, I'll probably maybe be there.
Re: August
Hey 63reasons,
I'm not sure if we've met before, but if not, hello!
Very happy to hear about another local dev shop that wants to get involved in the community.
cough, cough, Whisky Echo Bravo
The 11th is fine for me, but we really should ask Angie (webchick) first if she's available.
Lullabots often have commitments on the 2nd week of the month, so she couldn't make it to the one this week.
We all missed her. :)
If she says no, perhaps the Friday 7th is a good time. (And, it's my birthday!)
Also, I was hoping to have Evolving Web host the next one, since there's hopefully going to be 7 of us coming, and the past 3 meetups have had around 15 people total.
If that's cool with you, maybe we could do the next one at your office?
PS Supercron looks really promising, can't wait to try it out!
Hey there, Yeah, we've met;
Hey there,
Yeah, we've met; I'm Louis-Eric. Hopefully Angie will be there; I had pitched the idea to her back in late May.
Not sure if September would make sense; the cool thing here is the 4th floor outside terrace with a limitless supply of drinks (caffeinated or otherwise), and it'll be way too chilly in October (I'll stay for a few weeks in France after Paris DrupalCon, and there's a good chance I'll spend the rest of the month abroad as well, so that'd push it way into early October territory). I'm back on August 9th. One option if you want to host it is to also create Drupal Drinks and host the first one here. This way we can all meet on a more social level before Paris.
Cheers,
Louis-Eric
Hey Louie-Eric, having both
Hey Louie-Eric, having both a formal meetup and a "Drupal drinks" sounds like a great idea. I've felt that the last two meetups were great but didn't have enough time for people just to chat--it's just hard to fit both hardcore Drupal knowledge sharing AND casual mingling (with or without liquids) into just 2 hours. Plus, the bar/cafe scene in the vicinity of our old Montreal office is a bit pricey, so doing it chez 63reasons sounds ideal. If you could call or email me this week (alex at evolvingweb.ca or 514 844 4930), we can talk about picking two complementary dates.
Cheers,
Alex Dergachev
Aw, you guys are sweet. :)
In an unprecedented move, I am currently NOT traveling for the whole month of August!! Happy to drop by wherever/whenever you guys want to hold the next one. :) Probably make a new "Event" node so we can unsticky this one.
Also, NICE WORK on the detailed notes from this session, everyone! I'm so jealous. :)
Angie, if you are looking to
Angie, if you are looking to fill your travel quota for the month of August, I'll be hosting a Drupal meet-up on Prince Edward Island on August 3rd :)

A SuperTerrasse meetup!
Hey! J'adore les terrasses. Cela me ferait plaisir de visiter vos bureaux.
I'm eager to see your SuperCron and SuperSearch modules.
You should look for webchick on IRC and ask her when she will be in Montréal and available in August. As soon as you setup up a date, create an event. The sooner you create the event, the larger will be the crowd!
I know that Evolving web plans to host the next meetip, but since you have a SuperTerrasse, it would be fun to use it for the next one. We would still do the september meetup at Evolving Web.
/* http://www.xmacinfo.com */
So what are you waiting for? :-p
It seems that you have drummed up some interest so you should probably go ahead and create the event in the group.
BTW, I think that I'd be available on the 11th too.

July Meetup
Thanks again to the Koumbit folks for putting it all together. I learned bucket-loads and it was good to see Aegir up close.
Count me in for the 11th.
