Drupal Security Best Practices

It's been a while since the Los Angeles area has had a talk on Drupal Security, so we'll be focusing on this important subject at this meetup. Christefano Reyes (@christefano) from Exaltation of Larks (@LarksLA) will present on today's security-related best practices for Drupal. The following topics will be covered:

  • Common attacks to protect against
  • How the Drupal project's security team works
  • A security checklist anyone can use
  • My site's been hacked! Now what?
  • Available security tools, documentation and training materials

Drupal Happy Hour

Join us between 5:30-7pm for happy hour at Takami Sushi & Robata Restaurant (one floor above Sensis). Takami serves the highest quality Sushi, Robata and Japanese-influenced entrees and boasts unparalleled views of the LA area with outdoor patio dining. Agenda

After happy hour at Takami, we'll start our meeting at Sensis at 7pm. Our meetups follow a basic format and start off with Drupal news and announcements, local job announcements, raffle prizes and full-length presentations.

As always, we'll also have community Q&A, during which time anyone in attendance can ask questions, divine answers from the crowd and give brief, 5-10 minute-long presentations known as lightning talks. We'll finish off the night with more networking and a Drupal After Dark at 9:00pm.

Breakout Sessions

We have several spaces available for breakout sessions. This is an open, multi-track format where we break into groups and discuss a variety of topics. Each breakout session is led by a volunteer who picks the topic, picks the space and can optionally report back to the larger group in the form of an announcement or lightning talk.

This is also an opportunity for Users Helping Users, which is a participant-driven format where members of the community give and receive help with whatever questions and problems they're having with Drupal.

Please note that while Users Helping Users is not designed to be a replacement for bona fide consulting from a Drupal professional that there are plenty of Drupal experts and professionals who attend our meetups and sometimes they need help, too!

It's been a while since the Los Angeles area has had a talk on Drupal Security. I'll be presenting on today's security-related best practices and will cover the following topics:

  • Common attacks to protect against
  • How the Drupal project's security team works
  • A security checklist anyone can use
  • My site's been hacked! Now what?
  • Available security tools, documentation and training materials

There's enough material about the subject to take up the entire meetup, so I'm limiting this presentation to 30-45 minutes. If anyone has special requests, please let me know here and I'll try my best to cover it. Thanks!

Sounds interesting

Just prior to this meetup, we'll be going on our first site visit to USC to evaluate it as a venue for our upcoming DrupalCamp in early 2013:

A group of us will be carpooing from Droplabs and we may be going straight to this meetup at Sensis afterward. Hope to see you there!

Oscar Menjivar & his young men from the Urban TxT project are confirmed for this event also (posted it to the organizers email last week) & I'd asked how long your presentation was going to last to give them an idea of how long they can present for.

Sweet! Thanks for lining this up!

I can shorten my presentation on Drupal security best practices to allow for Oscar and the youth from Urban TxT to have more time.

FYI, Joe's Auto Parks has raised their rates to $8 since our last meetup. I'm sorry for the last minute news, everyone.

So long as people carpool, though, and park at Joe's or United Vallet, parking will still be covered by Exaltation of Larks, the parking sponsor for tonight's event.

Several sources are publishing a supposed vulnerability in Drupal. One source is the security site Packet Storm Security and attached here. This post is a response to that issue.

Summary

The Drupal Security team has concluded that this does not constitute a valid vulnerability. The attack depends on a "Man In the Middle" attack or sniffing software, which is outside of Drupal and presents a much bigger risk.

Thanks, Todd!

For now we're running with the name GLADCamp (short for Greater Los Angeles Area Drupal Camp). Thanks for the name, James!

If anyone wants to join the fun, check out the GLADCamp group at http://groups.drupal.org/gladcamp and click the "Join" link.

Great Meetup! Fantastic Discussion!

This was one of the top three meetups I've ever attended, and it's because of the great discussion engendered by Gladys' terrific presentation about BADCamp and the role of business and entrepreneurship in the Drupal community.

Gladys! Truly a great presentation!
