Fellow Media Moguls,
We're shaking off the dust from the Media module, which was sadly neglected during the heady Summer of Code, where we got Stream Wrappers into core! I'm excited to meet now with my fellow Drupalistas, and get the module presentable for Drupal 7 (and Drupal 6, if anyone is interested in helping on that front).
Come to the Mansueto offices in NYC on October 23-24 for a Monster Media Sprint! Let's bring the #D7UX Media Microproject to life!
I'll concentrate the next few weeks on working out a game plan, so that we can start the day off running. All levels of expertise are welcome! We'll have tasks and coffee for everyone...
Important note: You must pre-register, and you must have your Full Name in your profile, or you won't be admitted into the building.

Awesome! I’ll do my very best to finish the latest UI iteration late september/begin october (which includes a lot of structural improvements), so hopefully that won’t get in your way.

A new book?
Aaron, is that a new book? Or a second edition? I appreciated your talk at DIWD and have recommended the first edition highly. I wish I could participate in this sprint, but I am far from NYC. Good luck!
By the way, my strongest suit is usability and accessibility. I would be happy to answer any questions on those fronts if that would help. If I can stop reviewing hot issues long enough to figure out IRC, perhaps I could be available that way during the sprint.
We need usability & accessibility feedback!
@Cliff: Ah, sorry about my outdated sig. That's the first book. Although I do have an outline in the works for a new book, but it's little more than that until I can free up more time from the Media module and other important real-life priorities... Thanks for the recommendation!
We definitely want people coming into this from all angles; your help will be greatly appreciated. And let me know if you need some help on the IRC front. Besides the usual IRC clients dependent on platform, there's also Chatzilla for Firefox, and several browser based solutions.

I'll join in!
I'll participate as much as I can. I do have Chatzilla, but having it and getting around to playing with it are two different things. (I was hoping I could actually read your book first.)
Hi Guys
Iam new to all this.
While i was searching for a file abstraction layer for D6, to get attachments and media working properly in my WYSIWYG Plugins, i was researching assets, filenode, media_mover and even started on a api some days ago myself. Then suddenly iam stumbled over media and i was so freaking suprised amazed and whatever.
I have actually build WYSIWYG Plugins using modalframe any the WYSIWYG which handles ahah upload ( yes, in the dialog you have a full-drupal-serverd form / page ), lets the user choose alignement and title and a default preset size. On close it updates the forms attachments table like filefield, update or file_attach. All this was done for inline images like it is done by many others, but with a much simpler UI.
While i created it, i recognised, how "limited" it was on the current attachment type, in my case file_attach ( fileframework ). I could not use ImageCache, ImageAPI or Image, neither filefields or whatever. And if i would have like to implement it, i would have redo the whole plugin.
And finaly, media comes into play! It gives me aynthiny i need to build such gneralized WYSIWYG Plugins..and thats what iam gonna do here.
Iam currently trying to get ImageCache ready to use an fileAPI, so we can plug in it into a StreamWrapper. After that, i will create a new plugin using media and its api for file types / embeds / forms and uploading images for the first instance.
Sorry for the long post, it was just my long road here. I hope i can paricipate the sprint remotely, iam here germany. Iam getting my head into all this Resource and StreamWrapper stuff and try to get ImageCache as our first real-time example..which would be a complex one due to presets.
After all, i will try to provide new WYSIWYG Plugins and help there with the abstraction to have all this great functionality plugged into WYSIWYG Dialogs and actions.
Cu then!
ImageCache already in core
@EugenMayer, I'm excited to have you aboard! As regards to ImageCache, that's already in core (as Image Styles & Effects, I believe), at http://drupal.org/node/371374. I don't believe the system goes through the usual stream wrapper system, as they are unmanaged files (which are recreated automatically if missing). However, they should work in conjunction with existing streams.
Regarding the question about Resources and StreamWrappers -- the original API we created earlier this year had created a Resource module (which is still present in the Media package). That is deprecated for Drupal 7, now that it's in core as stream wrappers. I'm not sure if we'll keep that name for d6, or change it to better match d7 -- that will depend in large part to decisions made at the sprint in NYC.
Thanks for your participation; I'll be creating a web site and PDF to support the sprint next week, and will post details here.

Sprint Update
The question has come up if there might be folks interested in meeting on Sunday as well. I'm only going to be available Friday and Saturday, and I believe that Mansueto is only available on those days as well. However, it might be worth another day if there are enough interested people and a place for them to meet. Anyone want to take that on?
Also, I'm setting up a site over the next few days at http://drupalmedia.org/ as a clearinghouse for the sprint. I'm going to try to gather up all the bits and pieces of scattered Media API & PHP Stream Wrapper documentation and create some useful PDF's for reading material, and will try to have that in place by Saturday evening.
I'm excited to see everyone next week!
Thanks,
Aaron

Media group on DrupalKata.com?
I think DrupalKata.com already provides a good space for facilitating/funding sprints and projects (also touched on that here). Something I've been meaning to do, but just not sure the best way to set up projects...i.e. a separate group for each individual media project (media module, open media project, music distro, etc.) or somehow group them together. Probably a real good reason to figure this out now...
Drupalmedia.org, IMHO, seems like it would be more useful as a repository/showcase piece for all media - similar to what we're doing with the new Dojo, but media specific.
I'll certainly help hook this up if you think that's a good way to go.

Event Reminder Email Borkage
I received a reminder email for this today however it was borken. It was a plain text email that only said:
I haven't seen any other g.d.o alerts coming through like this, so I'm not sure what the dillyo is.
no delete?
Is it my imagination or didn't g.d.o. formerly have a delete option for posts?

Media Styles
On the train back, I had a brainstorm that should solve any hanging issues about media display formatters. No time to talk about it till Monday (Ashlin's Birthday), so look at API.txt and media.styles.inc in the project checkout...

media_browser_content
I built out a hook for modules to load content into the media browser. I've done a mockup implementation that uses a results limiter and a pager, all functioning via ajax. Needs some cleanup and real data, but a reasonable proof of concept. Probably should be converted to a form so that we can pull cached form data in and out of Drupal rather than on passing arguments via the url stream, but as a first cut......

Recap session over Drupal Dojo?
Possibly a Drupal Media session would be a good way to bring people up to speed and plot out next steps. We also have a group on Drupal Kata that could help facilitate and potentially crowdfund ongoing development.

I'm ready to help facilitate.
