Firstly congrats to the Open Atrium team its a really impressive product and I think is going to be the basis for many effective communities... Thank you for your hard work.
As we have seen with DrupalEd , organic groups make great classrooms.
I think a really useful open atrium install profile that could be an e-learning system out of the box ... would be a combination of DrupalED and Open Atrium
I am planning to do some work to try and see what I can can do with creating some education orientated features for Open Atrium around the following modules
http://drupal.org/project/gradebook
http://drupal.org/project/og_gradebook
http://drupal.org/project/quiz
If anyone has any other modules to suggest or strategic suggestions please jump into this conversation.
Thanks
Gregg

So are we
Hia, this is very much in line with what we are doing / trying to do. We will most probably not use Open Atrium as such, but rather build our own site with use of Spaces, Context and Features. However, what we do should be possible to employ easily in OA too.
We are currently heavily developing the Quiz module, and as soon as Quiz 4 is ready and stable we will continue with making it feature-friendly, so you can build Quiz features that can be used in Open Atrium or other sites with spaces_og and Features.
We haven't looked much at gradebook as we will use this mostly for learning outside of a school / university environment, but are planning to create a "Certification" module integrated with Quiz, see http://drupal.org/node/501874 -
Other modules / features we believe an OA LMS would need is a forum, a tweaked book module better suited for learning material (open / close dates, maybe learning paths etc), possibly a chat, possibly a messaging system. Anyhow, interesting discussion, and nice to see more people seeing this potential with OA / Spaces / Features :)
In Progress...
We've got some folks working on this as well.
Sample Features...
All,
I'd like to share two features with the community quiz and training - but I don't know how to attached the feature code here. Can someone help. They were built by some drupal consultants called QWAY solutions. Andy was my contact there and they did everything (their icons / artwork). I figured I'd release the features to the community as a starting point. They rebuilt some of the quiz function from the ground up I think. And if you need any additional OpenAtrium work done, I can recommend them. And I think their design work is great too (they did the icons).
Cheers,
--Malcolm.
If under 1mb
hia mkmckinn, you can attach files here (under file attachements when you write a comment) as long as they are not larger than 1mb - I'd love to have a look :)
Similar needs for the Drupal Kata (running on Open Atrium)
A lot of these features would be ideal for the Drupal Kata, a homegrown project learning program running on Open Atrium. Possibly we could not only integrate, showcase, but help develop some of these features as a learning project.

Here they are, but with a wrong file extension...
Its a 7zip file, with an jpg file extension - just rewrite the extension...
Drupal Coordination Empowerment vs. Planning and Grading
Open Atrium is the most exciting thing (for my eyes) to come along in a while, embodying Dries' Drupalcon-DC keynote comment about how coordination trumps planning. As an easy-to-use, modular collaboration tool for all sorts of environments, I look forward to getting under the hood of the distribution I just downloaded and figuring out how to add BaseCampish features.
For educational settings, I'm not so keen on turning Open Atrium into Moodle (or GradeQuick) though....My sense is that Drupal's role in education is about authentic empowerment - particularly empowering students and teachers to develop collaborative online learning environments together and then reach out to the community with.
Moodle, on the other hand, is an incredibly powerful tool for "closed" online learning - doing the same thing over and over again with a set group of students, providing tests and grades and all that "SO twentieth century!" stuff. I'm sure most schools out there are still mired in those visions, but Drupalers know how we learn best. Argue with me?
I hope the Atrium stays open, not only in its code, but in its attitude toward the "architecture" of the spaces it can and will create as it propagates.
Development Seed are geniuses. No arguments there, I trust!

Version 2 coming up soon... any feedback on V1?
All,
Version 2 is in the pipeline - extensions include filtering users and questions lists, integration with user profiles (there's a tab called my quizzes listing passed quizzes) and the dashboard (when people pass quizzes it announces).
But has anyone tried the previous modules? Any feedback?
Cheers,
--Malcolm.
looks promising :)
i just managed to enable your features (how about putting them on a feature server ? :) and it looks fine !
a few problems (you probably know about them. just in case) :
- i had some trouble with permissions (couldnt create quizes as the user 0)
- management links dont work when "clean URLs" are disabled
- I am having a trouble saving training content it says :
warning: mysql_real_escape_string() [function.mysql-real-escape-string]: Access denied for user 'www-data'@'localhost' (using password: NO) in /data/www/virtuals/oa/sites/all/modules/custom/atrium_training/atrium_training.admin.inc on line 182.
(not sure if it is a problem in your feature or my setup but from waht i found it seems that no connection was created before the function was called)
questions
there seems to be no way to edit the "content group" name ?
ideas
- open atrium as such has a very nice interface for new nodes, it would be nice to use them here, too. Would it be possible ?
New Versions - Response to Feedback and Posting Help Request...
Sorry about the rough edges on the first set.
On your comments:
a) Problem Creating Quizzes - I think its hard coded in the permissions - you must have a "manager role" to create quizzes.
b) Clean URLs are a dependency, yes.
c) I had a similar error message - you have to add this as a feature remember, not a module.
d) I'm not sure what you mean by "content group"...
e) If enabled as a feature, the successful quiz completions hit the group and aggregate dashboard.
If any of you can help me with and appropriate way to share the new feature versions, (I trigger the drupal groups immune system with trying to attach things as I did before), I'd happily post the new feature versions.
Cheers,
--Malcolm.
Download link of the features?
Hi mkmckinn, I'd like to take a look at the features but could not find the link to download, can you tell me how to get them? How is the V2 going?
regards
Peter
Also wondering
Just wondering where this is at. I would love to see what you have done, but I can't seem to find a lead to your feature server?
No feature server...
Not really sure how to post - tried uploading to this list, but it spam rejected me and I don't have a feature server.
Could you send it via email?
Malcolm,
I am also interested in implement this on the new released open atrium beta4. If possible can you send to me a copy as well?
massstone at hotmail dot com. Thanks a lot!
Peter
git sandbox
@mkmckinn an ideal way to collaborate is posting this project in a git sandbox on d.o:
"Sandbox collaboration guide" http://drupal.org/node/1053378
Could you send it?
Do you think you could zip it up and send it to me. I would love to collaborate on something like this. We have a client that is looking to implement this. nigel.waters at hotmail dot com
Why not post this to the Drupal Atrium Kata?
Can you post a tar or zip file to http://drupalkata.com/curriculum/documents
I'd love to take a look at it as well.
Thanks!

Feature versions of gradebook, og_gradebook and quiz?
If someone succeeded in uploading these features, I'm sure I'm not alone in being very interested in trying what you've done. Please post a URL or a link or a feature server or ...?
Thank you,
David
