A little while ago Jacob Singh and Gerhard Killesreiter did some work to gather some growth statistics about drupal.org. Here's that data and some analysis of it (see attached Open Document Spreadsheet for the raw data and some pivot tables of the data).

  • We can see a big bump in registrations in January 2011 - Go Drupal 7.
  • Gerhard deployed honeypot and tweaked it in mid August 2012 and we can see a dramatic fall off in the users who registered who were later blocked. It's hard to say whether the fall off in Active registrations since then is losing valuable people are not. Engaged users haven't dropped much and there does appear to be some seasonality in high summer signups and slower signups in the northern-hemisphere's fall/winter.
  • 2008 was our biggest year for "Engaged" users (those who have created more than 3 posts and therefore now have the "not a spammer" role). 18.69% of our Engaged users registered in 2008 (15.39% in 2009, 11.84% in 2011)
  • If we look at just active users (or active who have logged in at least once) then 2011 was the biggest year and 2012 is likely to be similar. Again: Go Drupal 7.
