Just a quick note to announce that to support the creation of regular face-to-face meetings between some active Drupallers in the Los Angeles area -- experienced and newb alike -- the g.d.o moderators ("Powers that be") have seen fit to bestow us our own group.
If you think you'd like to join us one of these days, or just want to add your 2¢, I encourage you to check us out http://groups.drupal.org/los-angeles .

How about just renaming the Southern Caliornia group?
I kinda see where you are coming from, but why the split? Why not just ask the mods to rename Southern California to Los Angeles, maybe call it Los Angeles Area? San Diego now has their own group and has split off from So Cal and now LA has split off as well. Just seems like duplicate work to me.....

Good point
I think there was some discussion about this, but I'm not sure. I think there is still a way to merge the groups if we chose to do so. Additional thoughts and discussion would be helpful.
Having said that, it makes total sense that LA has it's own group. Think many more Drupal folks/companies will come out of the woodwork as we start meeting more frequently.

Incubation
My initial reaction was the same as yours: LA is the biggest metro around, so why not just call a spade a spade?
However, discussions I had on IRC with Greggles and others convinced me that the SoCal group can still serve an important role as an 'incubator' for nascent groups in other geographic regions that may develop a strong community.
For example, perhaps a bunch of Santa Barbarans will come together by way of the SoCal group and feel the desire to create their own group, much like the LA group has. Greg_y seems to have foreshadowed this in the group's welcome message, which lists a handful of cites that we may hope also reach critical mass.
In any case, I have been assured by the moderators that if the L.A. group doesn't drive enough traffic, it will be dissolved and rolled back into the SoCal group..! So, please, if you think that having a face-to-face community of fellow hackers to collaborate with in the area is a 'good thing', sign up and let us know! :)
Defintely a good thing!
But don't forget about Ventura :)

Good thing indeed
I think I missed a good part of the IRC discussion (and/or didn't give your proposal a thorough read). Think the L.A. group is here to stay. Especially after word spreads that we finally have a group.
Look forward to meeting up this weekend!
