Santa Barbara IMC to use Drupal
Hi all,
I am pretty much the sole admin here at http://sbindymedia.org. We are still running dada (in archive mode) and I have been trying to put together a Drupal install that would suit our needs. (Trying for many months now). A suitable place to host is one of the last issues. (and then there's the dada import, eesh).
We started with a 4.7 install, but as 5 grows I'm highly considering switching to 5.1 and dealing with any lack of modules. Is there a list of issues related to getting 5.1 up and running as an IMC cms? Do people recommend sticking with 4.7 or just switching?
Can we at least get a wiki story going with all of the IMC groups that are running Drupal and list which version and modules they have installed? I realize some of this is on the docs.imc.org server, but it's down and this would be information that the larger Drupal community could use also.
The last part I've really struggled with lately is finding an IMC friendly Drupal hosting server. The server we lease is way outdated and needs a complete overhaul to run Drupal. Does anyone have recommendations on where we could host an install that is friendly to IMCs (logging, large upload size, etc).
onward!

I'm interested in this
Hi, I'm part of the team maintaining Quebec Indymedia. We've been running Drupal for many years (upgraded to an "almost standard" 4.7 last year, from an old and heavily customized Drupal) and we are in the process of upgrading to 5.1. I think Drupal is a great platform for IMC sites, but I've never used Dada, so I can't compare.
We are kinda self-hosting, but we've been sharing hosting & servers with others, which is very good as the necessary bandwidth has been increasing all the time. It's been a great way to share costs and gain some security.
I think you should go with 5.1 as soon as you can. If you stick with 4.7, you will still need to upgrade someday and the job might be too much. It took us over a month to upgrade from our ~4.3 site. We were lucky enough to have someone who really wanted to do it... It's not as bad this time, but going from flexinode (4.6) to cck (5.1) isn't easy. :( You should definitely not get more than one version behind the current Drupal.
I would be interested in any kind of contact, collaboration, wiki, etc. I feel like indymedia sites are losing some momentum. If we can do something about it, we should... :) I can probably host a wiki for that, if we can't use the one on imc.org.

Drupal hosting
Hi jon,
For Drupal hosting, you might want to have a look at:
http://www.siteground.com/
At some point if you need to go virtual/dedicated server your server can be
easily/seamlessly upgraded, if you have much rich media activity. It has
been my experience, albeit limited, that the support is timely, complete
and satisfactory via email(only).
Drupal 4.7.4 is pre-installed. IMO although 5.x looks very attractive,
until the module support catches up, I intend to continue running 4.7.4.

Good luck with it.

What are your bandwidth and
What are your bandwidth and disk space needs? How big is your database?
Agaric Design could put you on our dedicated server
for money, mind you, but we're very pro-Indymedia.
Also, a lot of IMCs have important resources donated, have you looked into universities near you?
