Our local Linux User Groups frequently get free copies of books to give out at meetings. I thought this would be great to do at the Denver/Boulder meetings, especially given the recent release of the Drupal Pro development series. After contacting a few people I found this page from APress:
http://apress.com/userGroups/index.html
If you sign up on that page for your group then they will send you shwag. Note that it is on a quid-pro-quo basis. They expect you to promote their products in exchange for getting free stuff. That's not surprising nor unexpected (and I assume the books will be awesome), but people should know that going in. I suggest that you select that "yes" you have a mailing list (g.d.o provides that) and that "yes" you provide book reviews since you can profile the book on your blog/g.d.o sites.

Thanks. I got free book.
Recently, I founded the Ann Arbor Drupal group - http://groups.drupal.org/ann-arbor . I took your advise and registered my group with Apress - http://www.apress.com/userGroups/index.html . I then requested and received a copy of "Pro Drupal Development" in exchange for a review. I offered it up at our last meeting to anyone willing to write a review - http://groups.drupal.org/node/3982#comment-12669 . Hopefully, we will get a quick turn around on this book review and can offer another book at our next meeting.
Thanks for the tip.
Regards,
Michael Hofmockel

Los Angeles has used raffles
Los Angeles has used raffles regularly over the last year. It's fun... it helps bring people in... and it mentors noobs. its just "another" way to give back.
We also have some training companies out here ( http://drupaltrainer.com most recently ) that sometimes raffle off a seat for an upcoming training event.
