User group meeting
The Voip Drupal work group will be meeting this Wednesday (12/2) 6-8pm at the MIT Media Lab.
Our goal is to add VoIP capabilities (phone extensions, voicemail, voicemail groups, conference calls, audio events, etc.) to Drupal websites.
The team is currently focusing on the integration with the Asterisk open source PBX and there is a lot of interesting work to be done (http://groups.drupal.org/node/34210).
At this meeting we are going to explore the architecture of an existing system (www.whatsuplawrence.org) and brainstorm about the project's next steps.

I ended up bailing after 20minutes, sorry I missed it.
Please keep me posted on future meet-ups. I've dabbled in Asterisk in the past, I've used both FreePBX and PBX-IN-A-FLASH to setup a Asterisk box, but I didn't end up doing much with it. The job that I was planning on using it for didn't end up panning out, but I've been looking for an excuse to get back into it.
Also I would love to catch up with someone who did attend tonights meeting to be filled in on it. If anyone's interested in chatting (email, phone, irc) drop me a line.

Asterisk+Drupal
We are a charity. We got an Asterisk system programmed in India as my skills were not upto par for AGI script development. But the design is ours. This is conceived as a "Auditory web site" housing a variety of contents in a mySql database. User accesses these contents using AGI scripts, in traditional IVR manner. It is an audio web site and contents are delivered as sound at the end of telephone. The best part is that we can raise donations when user presses certain number option, It dials to telephone company and can be recognized as a 900 number service call and the telephone companies adds $X in the users telephone bill. It comes to us as donation. Our system is currently being tested.
The next phase is to build a Drupal portal (the visual web site) with very much same contents. Some additional contents such as maps will increase the usefulness. Since Drupal also uses mysql we plan to have database replication or cron based table update and synchronization. It will keep the contents between Drupal and Asterisk synchronized.
We have one final Xtra piece of functionality; a google bot type item which automatically updates Drupal site from other sites (who have registered with us). Thus we will have automatic update of Drupal (visual site) which updates Asterisk (Audio site). We think it is neat!
