The Other Side Cafe (Map)
407 Newbury St
Boston, MA 02115

Bring your laptop, Drupal project, and appetite (or thirst) to our second Drupal Drop-in. Last time we had a good turnout, answered some questions, checked out what other people were up to, and even got a little work done.

As always, no topics, speakers or agendas, just you, your laptop and the comforting company of other Drupal users diligently working, socializing and having questions answered.

By T
The Other Side Cafe is right across the street from the Hynes/ICA stop on the Green line (everything but the E train). Also it is about a 10 minute walk from Back Bay Station on the Orange Line.

By Car
The Other Side Cafe is at the corner of Newbury St. and Massachusetts Ave. There is a pay parking garage at the corner of Newbury and Charlesgate East (Map) If you know of something better (I have found street parking on occassion), please leave some advice in the comments.

Think there'd be interest in

jslag's picture

Think there'd be interest in doing one of these on a different day? Sounds like fun but my Monday evenings are all booked up.

i'd like to go

simpledrupal's picture

is it still on? I'm in boston and love start to get connected with local drupal people.

Yep, still happening!

The Drop-in for Monday, May 7th is ON.

We might need to poll people in the future for a better day.

Later

Next time it would be great to push back an hour. I'll miss the introductions (my favorite part, meeting real people and all) since its so close the the end of my work day.

June?

Has there been a date, time & place established for June yet?
Thanks! ~ rita

There are bad people out there.

I'm there

... though I may not last a long time. I'm flying home (to BOS) from Europe Monday, and by the time 6pm rolls around, I'll have been awake for 20 hours.... zzzzz

But I'd love to come for as long as I can.

Wahoo!
With sitewide tags to likes of "beer" and "cake" how could anyone miss this event?!

Thanks for coming out!

Thank you to everyone who attended. We had 10 people show up from all skill levels and interests---newbies, developers, cyclists, social networkers and educators. It was well lubricated and there were lots of neat projects to see, questions to answer, and even a few lines of code were written.

I took a couple photos:

Only local images are allowed.

I think we're going to plan on continuing this Drop-In at the Other Side Cafe on the first Monday of the month. If Monday is bad for people, maybe we could do another one later in the month on another day and location. Please post your suggestions.

Thursdays

Thursdays are good nights to hang out in the pub. I mean, thats when the weekend really starts.

Change of venue

christefano's picture

I had a great time meeting folks and talking about different projects. I'm all for regular meetups, but can we choose a different venue?

The Other Side Cafe is a really bad place to get any work done. It shouldn't be necessary to shout to be heard (some people had trouble hearing eachother) and the wireless was pretty spotty.

My vote is for Trident. It's much quieter, has more space, offers solid wireless and is very close to Other Side Cafe. Jude pointed out that Trident doesn't have outlets for power, but I think that's a reasonable trade-off.

parking!

Let me echo a request for change of venue. Newbury Street is a terrible location for those of us contemplating dropping in from the burbs.

Ditto

batsonjay's picture

Ditto all the above.

I think the venue selection should be prioritized by:
- ROCK SOLID wireless
- Reasonably low noise level (so we can hear)
- Enough room to have laptops on the tables
- Location (Downtown sucks for 'burbs people, but 'burbs locations are also tough. E.g. if you work in Waltham and live in Concord but the Drop-In is in Woburn, it'd suck as bad as downtown does. And vice-versa all 'round.)

Central Square is where its at

seaneffel's picture

Central Square is where its at.

  • Harvest Co-op Cafe, with free wireless and sandwiches (no beer tho).
  • 1369 Coffeehouse, free wireless and hot/cold coffee beverages
  • Toscannini's Ice Cream, free wireless and best ice cream in Boston

All of this only 3 Red line stops from Park Street, and a pair of giant free parking lots (both free after 6PM and all weekend, both at Prospect and Bishop Allen).

Central Square would be fine

christefano's picture

Central Square would be fine with me. I've had no trouble parking as long as it's not during the weekend.

Of the three, I think Toscanini's may be the best. 1369 rarely has enough tables free and Harvest has even fewer tables.

Any of the three would be better than Other Side Cafe. I'm willing to try any of the three places you suggest and figure things out as we go. My preference is for Toscanini's.

Ice cream + Drupal = satisfaction

seaneffel's picture

I have an "in" with the owner. I'll see what I can do.

Any word on Toscanini's

bensheldon's picture

Have you had a chance to follow up with them? I'd love to set a date for ice cream and Drupal next Monday.

Whoops

seaneffel's picture

Sorry, Ben. I wasn't getting notices that there were replies here. I'll talk to my insider over there and let you know.
