Start:
2010-03-02 18:30 America/New_York
Event type:
User group meeting

We will be hosted by the MIT Drupal Group in Cambridge in Building E51 - Tang Center (mapquest) in room E51-149 . Thanks again to Ed Carlevale for hosting us and to Susan MacPhee for securing this space.

Parking and Transportation:
After 3pm, there is an unattended MIT lot folks can use. It is Hayward Lot http://whereis.mit.edu/map-jpg?selection=P5&Parking=go

Lightning Talks

Everyone is welcome and encouraged to present for 10 minutes on a topic of their choosing. You may show off your Drupal site, ask some questions of the audience, give a module demonstration, share some marketing ideas for Drupal, and so on. Just keep it brief. No expertise or planning required - just do it.

Dinner

After the meetup, some of us will continue the conversation over dinner at MIT's Muddy Charles Pub. We will likely pre-order some pizza so it meets us there. We'll take a count about half way through the meeting.

See everyone there!

The ones I like are Drupaleros and Drupalistas.

Drupalista, Drupalero, and Drupal

Ed Carlevale's picture

I find myself using Drupalista to refer to someone new or prospective to Drupal, Drupalistas to refer to the community, and Drupalero to refer to anyone who has made the leap from Everything Else to Drupal. I used to think the word Drupal was an insuperable problem, an awkward and inexpressive word that would nix Drupal's chances of really taking hold. I'm long past that kind of small thinking. Drupal is on its way to establishing itself as the Apple of open source, and at that point all branding issues will take care of themselves. First it will turn up as an answer in a New York Times crossword puzzle. Then Obama will mention it in a State of the Union address. Then the OED will consult Wikipedia and publish a definitive definition and history. For me, the only remaining question is what the verb form will mean. To drupal... To have been drupaled. What will these words mean? -- Ed

"Drupal" pronunciation

lbourn's picture

I had a friend mention "Dru-Paul" (rhymes with "RuPaul") last night. First time I'd heard it said like that.

I like it. Dru-Paul.
Trying to incorporate drag queens into this somehow, but it's not working. "Drupal queen" doesn't have the right cachet to it. "Drupal drag" implies costuming more than coding, nevermind latency issues ("Yeah bud, if ya can't get yer Drupal drag down by at least half yer gonna see some serious performance hits on the server").

To the original queries:
I think I'll go w/ Drupalero when trying to sound wild-west/cowboy -ish (a la the Canyonero from the Simpsons[1]), and Drupalista when working towards an unspoken but assumed sophistication.

Drupaller

I prefer Drupaller. Wouldn't "drupalista" be feminine? That's fine for me, but there are far more "drupalisto" folks in this group.

Or we could just be Drupers.

The suffix "ista" is

The suffix "ista" is gender-neutral in both Italian ("barista") and Spanish ("Zapatista"). I would vote for "drupalist" though. The first thing that came to my mind when I read "drupalista" was "fashionista" for some reason, while "drupalist" makes me thing of "physicist" or "alchemist."

I like Drupalista. It makes

I like Drupalista. It makes me want to make a flourish with my hand when I say it. And it sounds like the name of the person that makes the espressos at Starbucks, what are they called? Baristas! (<3 google)

Drupalista

freescholar's picture

I like Drupalista because it has a South American revolutionary sound to it... I also like Drupalmancer, Drupalator and Drupalologist although the latter is a semi-tongue twister.

My heart skipped a beat when

My heart skipped a beat when I read "Drupalmancer." I support it as a dark horse candidate, simply because of its terror-inspiring qualities.

I vote Drupalista ...like Capoeirista.

I vote Drupalista ...like Capoeirista.

I see my Capoeirista link

bryanhirsch's picture

I see my Capoeirista link didn't come through via email. So, here it is:

I re-cast my vote for Drupalista, like capoierista, barista, Zapatista, socialista, capitalista, fashionista, alchemista, cosmologista and artista.

Top of HEAD Suggestions

Scott McCabe's picture

Sorry, I could not resist capitalizing HEAD in a salute to CVS as we replace it with Git. :)

I think we need a few more choices to consider. Except for when speaking Italian, Drupalista does not fit every Drupalista's personality (the serious part of me would not like it on my business card). There's something too (insert adjective that I'm looking for here) about it.

I suggest:

Drupalmaster or Dropmaster (I always liked Webmaster)
Drupal (plus insert title here -- e.g. Drupal Artist)

Ooh, I like Drupal Artist (though Dropmaster feels pretty good too).

Anyways, I look forward to seeing all of you whatever-we're-called tomorrow!

here's some to eliminate

Drupies. (let's face it. that's what the enemy calls us!)

Druplers.

Druulers.

Drips.

Drupalmaster is too much like Dungeon Master, which has a bit too pimply connotation for my taste. Drupalmancer! Drupalmancer! Drupalmancer!

Drupalmonger

...and Droops...

sounds a bit like Troops... Round Up the Droops!

Drupaldoer

bdimaggio's picture

I'm putting in a vote for "Drupaldoer." It makes Drupal sound interestingly illicit.

Drupalcator?

The Drupalcators druplicate. All the time.

I like Druplicator!!!!

Wow

NancyDru's picture

What a great meeting last night. I finally got to meet three DrupalHeroes (Moshe, Robert, and Jeremy) after so many interactions on DO. Moshe was the first DH to allow me to co-maintain one of his modules. Jeremy was the second.
