Looking for Drupal Mentor
Hi my name is CJ and I have been trying to find a mentor to teach me the ins and outs of drupal. Ive been reading the book but I am still lost. Yes I am a newbie when it comes to drupal. I really want to understand the concept and how to become a good web person. I am willing to do pro bono work if it means I can learn. Ive been stuck in the stone age because I am still using Mambo.
If your wondering, I am not a total newbie. Im a decent web producer, I just dont have drupal knowledge to be able to create sites from the ground up. I would like to be able to create modules by myself and not worrying that it will crash and burn when I am done with it. Please teach me. Your fast response is greatly appreciated.

I can help.
Cj, I am not a drupal expert by any means. And can't help you with creating a module. But I can walk you through creating a site and getting it setup. Look me up at the Tuesday night meeting or contact me directly.
new and planning to be there
Ali,
Hello, I am interested as well. Am new and planning to be there.

mentoring
Hi Ali,
I also am new to drupal and have been hesitant to attend meetings because I am not yet familiar enough with Drupal to speak intelligently. I have tried my first site and it didn't work upon launch. I would also like to learn more.

Monthly Meets
The monthly meetings are for everyone - beginners included - even if the main presentation is pitched at a higher level, there's always a 'Community Q&A' session. No such thing as a dumb question.
Just Go :)
Last year I was a newbie. The first meetings went waaaay over my head. I sat silently and absorbed what I could.
But the usergroup is VERY welcoming and encouraging. If you hang in there, you'll get it. We've ALL been there at some point and we want to see others climb aboard.
I think the mentoring idea is good too.
Great Group
This is a great group of people!!! Very friendly and VERY helpful!
Books can be rough
Books can be rough but they're a great resource to flip through if you get stuck. However, for getting started I always suggest folks to do a search for "video tutorials" and "screencasts" as there are TONS online. You can even download some of them so you can reference them whenever you need or for future projects that might be more complex.
hope that helps.

Cj_Victa, I talked to Sasha
Cj_Victa, I talked to Sasha tonight at the meetup. We're going to meet at a cafe, perhaps around 101 and 405 or if not, in W. LA. Let me know if you want to join us. I am going to install a site from scratch and answer any other questions.
There are some issues with my login on this site. If you can't get to personal contact form, contact me here http://torkzadeh.com/ali/contact
This invite is open to anyone else that is completely new to drupal.

School sucks
See I really want to go but I have a class that starts at 6 and ends at 10 thats why Im looking around for a mentor to run me thru and I know you guys are willing and I am more than happy to oblige and meet and see the setup. I wish I could be there. All the meetings that you guys have are in the days that I am in class at night which sucks for me. And I emailed a couple of people back to see them and meet up so I can learn from them. I dont mind pro bono work as long as I can learn this and not look like an idiot when it comes to drupal. I tried to do the book and it got me lost when im trying to setup the server side and the interface looks messy when I upload themes. Ive been tinckering around it but I would rather someone tell me Im doing wrong than stumbling into a minefield
Email failed
I tried contacting you Ali thru your site and there was some spam filter that wouldnt let me. Well the just of it was that I have classes are at the same time as the meetings but I would like to meet and learn more about drupal. Is there a possibility you can teach me. I am willing to learn and been looking around the forums and watching videos. Im actually stuck when it comes to backing up files while your site is live or something along those lines. As you can see, I am a novice at best. So if you can squeeze me in your schedule that would be great. I am looking forward to your response. Thanks in advance
