LibraryCamp June24th Call for Speakers

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.
dougvann's picture

Alrighty...
The ball has never been rolling faster on the notion of having a LibraryCamp just prior to the American Library Association National Event.
I just made some major additions to the wiki http://groups.drupal.org/node/43044 including the notion of a venue-decision deadline for April 7th and a financial commitment for Duo Consulting to pay the Venue fee on April 8th.
Within FIVE DAYS from this post we will know where the event is and the next day it will be reserved.

The following individuals expressed an interest in presenting at the LibraryCamp.

I would like to use this thread to discuss the topic(s) that each speaker would be willing to present on. This is also a great place for any one to share topic(s) they desire to see at the LibraryCamp. As this thread develops we can edit the wiki to add the potential topics by each speaker's name.

Te question still remains whether we might go for an UNconference style event. Perhaps we will do a hybrid where we have a number of presentations followed by something similar to an UNconference. I suspect that the quantity of topics offered for presentation may well decide that for us. Feedback is welcome on this and ALL details.

All comments welcome, and THANK YOU for a lively chat about the content of our LibraryCamp! ;-)

Session topics that Doug Vann is available for.

dougvann's picture

I'd be happy to cover a number of topics. I enjoy the uber-geeky code side and I really enjoy being the nutz-N-boltz Drupal guy. What I don't know is how much of a need there would be for THE BASICS at this event?

Here are a variety of topics I'd be good for:

  • What is Drupal? {A look at its founding, evolution, and role as a Web Content Framework today.}
  • Getting Started: {Getting past the WELCOME screen and into content creation and configuration with light use of CCK/VIEWS}
  • CCK/VIEWS {Skipping the basics and heading straight for the GUI that we all know and love}
  • Webform Module: {This gem is a must have for giving users a powerful form that emails submissions, stores submissions in the database for sorting and retrieval. Useful for tricked out CONTACT forms and a variety of other data gathering forms.}
  • Community Involvement: I am fond of saying that "Drupal is an awesome community that just happens to use a piece of software by the exact same name!" In this session I focus on drupal.org, Groups.drupal.org, Camps/Cons, BOOKS, IRC, TWITTER, FACEBOOK, PODCASTS, and all of the ways that one can keep connected to the community.}
  • Intro to Module development: {Sometimes you just have to write some code}

If anything on this list sparks an idea in you, share it. I can put a presentation together for it.

another suggestion

susanbcampbell's picture

I'd like to see something on customizing search results -adding thumbnails to the output, for example. Perhaps users permissions and roles would also be a good topic.

outside speakers?

swacktacular's picture

Thanks, DV. Also the wiki updates have been productive.

I would be happy to contact people at organizations we might want to hear from (Smithsonian, WhiteHouse.gov, DCPL?) to see if we can get them to talk about their Drupal Projects. Any thoughts on that?
I'll be interested to see what the volunteers here are willing to speak about and what the attendees would like to see covered. I lean towards a hybrid of planned talks and unconference sessions.

Awesome!

dougvann's picture

Boy! It sure helps having well-connected people in on this!
Smithsonian, WhiteHouse.gov, DCPL? Bring 'em in!
As you get commitments from any of them, post it here [in long form] and briefly on the Wiki and we'll sort it out.
I totally agree about the hybrid of planned talks and unconference. I think every post I've seen on here indicates a unanimous opinion on that.
We'll definitely want to get our line-up established so that we can blast out the news.

THNX!

well...

swacktacular's picture

I wouldn't say I'm personally well-connected, but I'm willing to contact people and try to drum up some interesting speakers. I think Leo Klein said he had friends at DCPL and had been talking to them? I'll ask him if he could check on whether anyone there would be up for speaking about their move to Drupal before I try contacting anyone there.

Calendar, SOPAC

liberatr's picture

Hi my name is Ryan Price, and my friend Mike (ultimike) and I do a lot of Library training.

The two things we seem to get asked about the most are:

Calendar:
Date-enabling content, allowing for signups, reminders, etc. Organic groups kind of enter into this as well.

SOPAC/Millenium/etc:
How to integrate with the library back-end. Honestly, I have no experience implementing this, I'd love to see a session on it so I can answer. I saw a cool presentation about Evergreen at a library conference once, but the rep. didn't have nice things to say about Drupal. :'( I guess it's her job to make EG look good. At the same time, her presentation was phenomenal - going all the way back through the history of libraries, and exploring how libraries' missions have gotten diluted over the years. I'm no Library Science Major, but it made me very excited about the space.

P.S. I'm thinking about attending the conference and I'd like to be a speaker - I'd love to grab one of the existing list or perhaps do a calendar talk. I have relatives who live a few hours away (near Philly) so I figure I could make a day trip down to DC for the camp in the midst of a visit up there.

++ for Ryan Price

dougvann's picture

I want to add my ++ for Ryan.
He's another one of the Drupal Training Soldiers out there. We've crossed paths at cons and camps as we satisfy our shared mission of training the masses. Like myself, Ryan not only helps out at community events, but also provides private training for clients and those in need of quality Drupal consulting.

SOPAC

jblyberg's picture

I'm happy to give a SOPAC demo and talk about its architecture, etc. Depending on the attendees, I can give a brief overview of the code itself and some of its major components. Also, 2.1 has some features that take advantage of CCK3. I'd also like to talk about what Drupal 7 means for the SOPAC project and how it's going to fundamentally change the way we look at the catalog.

OOH! That sounds very nice indeed.

dougvann's picture

I'd love to hear that!

SOPAC/Millenium

thomwcox's picture

This would be huge for us. We're thinking about relaunching our website in Drupal. SOPAC is of great interest to us as a big part of what we hope to accomplish in Drupal is discovery platform integration. Forgive me, I'm new to the conversation. Is a venue and program for LibraryCamp set at this point? Thanks.

venue and date...

Hi, Thom. We have reserved space for the 24th, a week from today, at the central Arlington public library... but other than that, most details, like who wants to present, still haven't been solidified, I think.

Drupal Usability and Libraries

User Advocate's picture

Hi,

My name is Michael Keara and I am a usability specialist and Drupal developer. My consulting company, The User Advocate Group, has just finished an extensive project where we designed and built a new Drupal based site collaboratively with the Ottawa Public Library (http://biblioottawalibrary.ca). We were involved from end to end - that is beginning with user interviews and ending with custom module development. The OPL site is a 2-in-1 with the catalog aspect being handled by bibliocommons. My company did the home site that presents all the 'local' content.

There is a lot I could talk about on this project, from the usability requirements analysis and design perspective to our approach to custom Information Architecture modules for better usability. We also did customization of the content management interfaces so that library staff can create and manage content with greater ease and productivity. If there is interest in this kind of thing I would be willing to put together a presentation and make my way down there for the camp. (We're based in Toronto)

I'd also be interested in chatting with folks at the camp about the end user issues they face as well as exploring the value of generalizing the custom work we did for OPL so that other libraries could benefit from it. In that regard I'd like to hear more about library requirements so that I could get a better handle on common factors.

So if this sounds like it might be of interest to anyone, please let me know and I can pursue it further.

Thanks,

Michael Keara

Really like this idea.

dougvann's picture

This sounds like a quality opportunity for the LibraryCamp.
We have a lot to shove into a single day and we're leaving plenty of time for an UNconference where people will split up into self organized groups.
Michael, could you take one hour and do a case-study on the site? I suspect that during the UNconference you could gather quite a crowd [including me!] for a more in-depth dive into the site.

sclapp's picture

I just took an intro to usability course, in order to help guide our project of migrating from a static html website (with serious usability & accessibility issues) to Drupal. Please do this presentation. I'm sure I'm not the only one with interest in this topic, as "user experience design" is one of the top tech trends identified for libraries this year at ALA midwinter. We're all trying to improve our users' online experience.

Usability unconference session sounds good

User Advocate's picture

Thanks Doug and Sharon for your feedback. I'd be happy to put something together for an unconference gathering. I've been mulling over what I could focus on and I've boiled it down to:
- an introduction to the concept of Role oriented usability design with a look at the meaning of Information Architecture in that respect.
- a quick summary of what customization was done for the Ottawa Public Library site in order to support the Role oriented design and how it extends the capabilities of standard Drupal.

I'm already a bit breathless thinking about how to squeeze those two things into the space of an hour. Perhaps this session could just be the start of some ongoing discussions.

As a very visual person I find it beneficial to use a projector to show key images. Is there a chance we could have one for this session?

Cheers,

Michael

projector

swacktacular's picture

Hey, Michael. There is a projector in the probable meeting room and a screen. Maybe someone else will also have one they can bring in case we want to divide the room into 2 for separate group meetings during part of the time and both sides of the room want projectors...

Back... meet around CIL?

sclapp's picture

Hi all, sorry for the delay in responding - family crisis kept me offline for a couple of days.
- Did some of us want to get together around CIL (Mon or Tues night = best for me) to do some work F2F? And yes - the SurveyMonkey acct we have is pro & I can export the results to organizers easily.
- Did you want me to announce the survey to Drupal4Lib? If you want to do some back & forth via email vs. here, feel free to contact me at sclapp@cslib.org
Thank you,
Sharon C.

Don't forget to sign up! :-)

Placeholder.

domesticat's picture

FYI - I am still interested and willing to present, but I'm getting ready to present at the Alabama Library Association conference (I speak on Wednesday) and then a week later at Drupalcon. Count me "Non-Specifically In" and we'll figure out what I can talk about after I get through these first two presentations.

Placeholder part 2

domesticat's picture

As of today (May 18) I am still awaiting a decision from higher-ups on whether or not I may miss work to attend.

...and I'm out.

domesticat's picture

It took long enough to get confirmation that

1) I would be allowed to attend the conference
2) I would have a place to stay

Airfare for the times I could actually get there and back is now over $500. HMCPL isn't paying for this trip, and that's more than I'm comfortable paying out of pocket. Sorry. :(

We would love to speak

krysgeek's picture

We would love to speak about a case study on a Library's Teen Program site that we are doing. Something along the lines of "Jumping in Feet First instead of Head First with Drupal". It has been the most fun project we have done and a way to demonstrate how you can do a standalone program site in Drupal first, and then integrate the larger library sites piece by piece as you are ready.

swacktacular's picture

Hey, everyone. This event is now less than a month away and I really think we need to get a good idea of who will be presenting and how things will be structured.

To get that ball rolling again, I put together a suggested schedule (I just made it up, so feel free to suggest something else) and condensed everyone who might want to present, and if they've mentioned it, what topics they can cover (see below). We also haven't really done much advertising, so perhaps we should do that. I asked DCPL, the Smithsonian, and WhiteHouse.gov about presenting, with no luck. If our library-specific folks can't fill all the spots we need, maybe we can send out a message to the DC Drupal Group that meets monthly and I hear is pretty large. The rrom we're in can easily be divided in half.

9-10:30 Intro / Keynote (need to get a keynote speaker if we want one)
10:30-11:30 Session
11:30-12:30 Session
12:30-2 Lunch
2-3 Session
3-4 Session

Sorry, I have to cancel

User Advocate's picture

Hi All. With great regret I have to say I'll not be able to make it to the LibraryCamp because of the timing around my house sale and moving to a new city.

I will share the info on my web site about the Ottawa Public Library project and other usability projects when I'm resettled.

Hope everything goes well for you!

I'm there!

sclapp's picture

I'm DEFINITELY planning to be there. Unfortunately, I know only the minimum amount about Drupal at this point, so can't offer any presentations, but I'm working on migrating our site to Drupal and trying to integrate with other components of our library's web presence, so users can have a more coherent and positive experience on the site. I'm trying to learn as much as quickly as possible and find that an F2F exchange of information and ideas can be extremely useful! I should catch the Sunday part of the Design for Drupal camp Boston this weekend. I'd be happy to share what I learn, though.

OK, good

Overlooked the GDO Calendar

dougvann's picture

Wow!
How'd we do that? We never posted an official GDO event therefor the LibraryCamp was never on the GDO calendar. Well... It has been a crazy ride pulling this off. ;-)
I just posted an event and cross posted to the DC group. They have some heavy hitters over there. It would be awesome if they could join us. I also promoted the post to the front page of GDO to garner more attention.
I went ahead and left the REGISTRATION active so that people can signup for the camp.
We should take some time at the camp and have a brief discussion about 2011! :-)
