channelAustin is adopting PBCore as a metadata standard for video genre types. PBCore is the metadata standard for the exchange of Public Broadcasting content. With this decision, channelAustin joins the Bay Area Video Coalition (BAVC) and Denver Open Media in using PBCore. channelAustin is including the PBCore Module in its Open Media Project implementation (in development) and will model its configuration after BAVC. This involves designating about 12 PBCore genre types as "parent" terms and quite a number more as "child" terms. These "parent" terms also correspond one-to-one with the OMP's timeslot themes.

channelAustin's configuration differs from BAVC in the decision of which PBCore terms to designate as parent v. child. For example, in BAVC's implementation, "music" is a child of "art", whereas at channelAustin, since we have a relatively large number of music programs, we've decided to make "music" a parent (and by extension, a timeslot theme). So we will end up with different timeslot themes, and different parent-child designations, but minimally we'll be using an existing held metadata standard: PBCore.

There was initial reluctance on the part of the Open Media Project to use PBCore because Version 1.1 is lacking. However, there is an effort underway to improve PBCore with a June 30, 2010 deadline for submitting recommendations, and an anticipated release of PBCore 2.0 in fall 2010.

The Drupal Community as a whole may want to consider PBCore as an adopted standard for its media-related modules. At DrupalConSF during the presentation on Media Module: Multimedia in Drupal 7, I raised a question about video metadata standards. The answer was that such standards are still under discussion for Drupal media modules and there is no consensus. Perhaps Drupal media-related module maintainers might engage in the PBCore 2.0 recommendation process to get out of PBCore what best serves the needs of Drupal media development.

Excited to see increased use of PBCore

Really, any standardized metadata is pretty exciting. Here at TelVue we have implemented PBCore support for a few versions and for a few different uses, including a complete 1.2.1 implementation recently for an archival project at WHYY in Philadelphia. We have been watching the development of PBCore 2.0 as well and are interested to see where it goes. We are looking towards more and more PBCore inclusion in all our products. Great to see channelAustin using it as well!
