Combining PNW IRC channels

heyrocker's picture

Hey everybody!

So currently there are three Drupal channels for Pacific Northwest cities - #drupal-portland, #drupal-seattle and #drupal-vancouver. Right now there is a lot of overlap between these channels - people who hang out in two or three, but a lot of the time the individual channels are pretty dead. Additionally, since the Drupal Summit last year, there seems to be more of a broad community feeling between all the groups than there has in the past. So I was thinking maybe we should just do away with the three channels and form a new #drupal-pnw channel. It would bring more of us together and for many remove the need to join two or three channels individually. Local-only discussions could still happen on the groups, as it does already really.

Thoughts anyone? I'd love to hear them!

Greg

i'd be up for a pnw channel

i'd be up for a pnw channel (especially for more social chattiness), but i do see some use in keeping the local channels.... like occasionally they're used for local events, organizing, etc.

Great idea but...

I'm all for the idea but maybe with a different name.
The way I discovered the #drupal-vancouver room was from the network list. I did a search for Vancouver and happened to notice it. I think #drupal-pnw might get overlooked by newcomers.

How about #drupal-pacific-northwest?

I think the local channels

I think the local channels should absolutely stay, but perhaps with a "hey, you should join #drupal-pnw!" message as the topic, if they're not actually used any longer.

That said, I'm guessing they WOULD still be used; as Ariane notes, there IS still a use case for them.

how about #drupal-cascadia

as much as i like cascadia,

as much as i like cascadia, the pnw branding is already fairly well entrenched, no?

I don't think there is any

I don't think there is any reason that the irc channel that we all hang out in every day has to be co-branded with the summit which happens once a year.

So i would lobby hard for cascadia as it is a geographic name that rightly characterizes norther california up through british columbia.

i like PNW but cascadia is

i like PNW but cascadia is definitely more geographically accurate (so not SUPER sold one way or the other). i'm all for democracy ;-) maybe put up a poll?

I can see how #drupal-pnw

I can see how #drupal-pnw might be misunderstood, how about #drupal-nw? The local channels are still useful for local events, organization, but that could still happen on the nw channel depending on the noise.

Something to consider: most

Something to consider: most of us on the north (or west!) side of the border will recognize the "Northwest" in this case as "Pacific Northwest", the usual American definition--but for most Canadians, "Northwest" would mean "North West Territories", confusingly located--to those of us in the PNW--to the northeast.

Seems to vary

Catherine, I used to think this as well, but among the people I hang out with it doesn't seem so cut and dried.

And oddly enough, the Yukon

And oddly enough, the Yukon Territories are most west than the North West Territories, so the NWT does actually touch the Pacific. Many a wrong answer I on geography exams :(

just fyi, the pnw name has

just fyi, the pnw name has grown out of the branding from the PNW Drupal Summit http://pnwdrupalsummit.org/ - would probably be nice to stick with that for consistency (plus just nw is less specific and the longer version is....well.... kinda long!)

You have my support.

japerry - Tue, 2010-05-25 19:37

You have my support. Actually, having it be #drupal-pnw will encourage those in Bellingham to join up as well. This will flow with our newly forming group here on gdo.

I too think this is a good

asenseofdesign's picture
asenseofdesign - Wed, 2010-05-26 04:13

I too think this is a good idea: it already created a better sized channel, not as small as the local ones that hardly register activity most of the time, but also not as gigantic as #drupal, where sometimes one gets lost just trying to follow the conversations while doing something else. I hope some more people join and that the conversation/exchange takes place.

Though I'm seldom on IRC
