Anyone can join? What type of discussions will there be? I have never joined your meetings in the past.

Thanks

These are meetings for coordinating meetings :) we've got a lot of plans stewing for Drupal in Indiana this summer, so we're organizing weekly meetings. Anyone can join if they're interested!

The HISTORY of the INDIANA group.

dougvann's picture

This is really a renaissance movement. The dark-ages took its toll on civilization and only the exuberant presence of the arts and a return to decorum could restore humanity to a far less barbaric and savage expression. Oh... maybe its not EXACTLY like the renaissance...

But seriously.
Earnest Berry proposed this group on June 11th of 2007. 10 days later it was approved and the group existed only online and never met. Earnest became very busy and traveled frequently and became uninvolved with the group. That's fine. It happens.
In January of 2008 [the group was then about a year and 1/2 old] I started making noise about getting together. I polled "Which day is better?" , "What part of town?" , "What do you want to discuss?" The banter was minimal and I decided to just schedule a time and a place and see who shows up.
ENTER: Kevin Finney!
The two of us hung out at the Glendale Library for quite a while. I got him a nice contract gig to do some marketing for the guy I was working for. The networking was starting and already paying off!
In February it wound up being me and Mike Goodwin from W. Lafayette. He showed me the COOL stuff he was doing with Drupal and I just sat back and learned!
March fell through
April we had our first gig at the MidWest Internet offices where web easy media is now maintaing their offices. We had about 8 people and we started giving away books because i wrangled up a cash sponsor for the group.
May Another successful MidWest gig.
June a small gang at the Abbey (at it's old location)
July & August at the DownTown Library which we quickly outgrew!
ENTER: Tony Valle
September2008 thru July 2009 in these 11 months we had over 18 meetings most of them at Tony's place aka Promethius Consulting LLC. These were the HAYDAZE of the group which ended when it wound up being the same 3 or 4 people numerous times in a row.
August Break-Time
September Aaron and Kevin organized a cool private party for Indy Drupalers at Jillians Down Town where he showed off hiss mad skillz on Jillian's NEW WEB SITE!
October Break-Time
November BIGGEST HACKFEST EVER! we had done 3 earlier hackfests and they all went well but this one proved that the MidWest facility wasn't big enough!
December Break-Time
January , February, March, May Aaron introduces the Drupal Dinners. They started off strong. I attended all but the February one.

Where do we go from here?

That's the very question we want to answer in this conference call.
I have lots of questions so I'll post them here:
Most of us agree that we have discovered any Drupal users who exist in the 317 area code and beyond. So... is the goal to find PHP devs and swing them over to Drupal?
Or is the goal to find .net and VB and C# devs and convert away from their closed-source ways?
How about finding people with virtually no web skillz at all and indoctrinating them into Drupal
I'm not advocating one suggestion over another. I'm asking what's the goal of this group?

When I started the meetups 2 and 1/2 years ago I just wanted to see who else was in town who was excited as I am about Drupal AND to excite those who weren't! :-)
I ask you.... What are we hoping to do now?

Don't EVEN get me started talking about how difficult it is to find a venue.... After our last tremendously successful HACKFEST in October I knew that we couldn't do anything big at the MidWest facility again. My efforts to find anything remotely central and bigger have failed but i haven't stopped looking.

OK... Some one give me the prize for longest post to the group EVER!

Thanks for this Doug! I created a "History" Tab for the group. Made this a little less 'first-person' and added some of my own notes to the post. I also added a 'future' section so everyone can see where we're heading. Feel free to make changes if anything's not correct.

Here's the handout for the How2Drupal session. It needs more work, but time is valuable :) I'll post some others shortly

How About...

dougvann's picture

Awesome design [as always] from the DUDE!
Not a big issue but a handout is what accompanies an onsite education experience. These are more fliers than handouts. I hope that doesn't sound picky or snarky.
On the how2drupal flier I'd like to see an addition to the SPONSORED BY section: Indy Drupal Users Group.
I'd also like to see the Indy Drupal Users Group plugged in the dinner flier.
I think we're OK not mentioning GDO but the GROUP itself needs some billing. IMO.

Thoughts?
