2010-06-14 19:00 - 21:00 UTC
Event type:
User group meeting

Only local images are allowed. The next DC Drupal meetup will be on Monday, June 14 at 7:00 pm at Stetson's Bar and Grill, and it will be a part of Digital Capital Week, which looks like it will be very awesome weeklong technology festival happening in the city. Hopefully we'll get to introduce Drupal and our DC group to some new folks :)

This month's meetup will focus on publishing with Drupal, with one demo of a publishing tool scheduled along with a talk on search, which is important to any publishing site as well as many others. As always the floor is open to anyone who'd like to talk - for five minutes - about something Drupal related. If you want to join the line up, just post in the comments or talk to me at the meetup.

Jeff Walpole from Phase2 Technology will walk through Open Publish, their Drupal distro for online publishing. Josh Brauer from Acquia will talk about support and hosting they're offering for Open Publish.

Young Hahn and Jeff Miccolisfrom Development Seed will talk about Searchlight, an experimental approach to pluggable search backends in Drupal that lets you leverage advanced search services like Solr or Sphinx interchangeably. He'll be blogging about it and an implementation we're working on for a client this week at http://developmentseed.org/blog, so if you want a sneak peak watch for that.

Drupal meetups are open to everyone and are a great way to get to learn more about Drupal and meet its local user and developer community. The meetup will start at 7:00 pm, with presentations starting at 7:30 pm. Hope to see you there!

Saman is the one who designs the meetup posters, and he's been doing them for quite awhile now. Glad to hear that you dig them : )

Newbie to Drupal

I am just getting started with Drupal & thought that User Groups would be the best way to get up to speed quickly. Is this the right place for me? If so, I would love to attend. I have been a ColdFusion Developer for 10+ years and am ready to make the jump to Drupal.

Also a Coldfusion Dev looking at Drupal

I've fought my IT department for years trying to convince them that we can do things that aren't Microsoft. I'm going to be here because I want to go into publishing online and get out of the IT world. I'm interested from a business perspective. But there are a lot of frustrated developers trapped in platforms that their IT director "feels comfortable with." A year ago I wanted to do a project in Drupal and MySQL. The refusal was based, I kid you not, on the statement, "MySQL isn't enterprisey enough." So they spent 70 grand on servers and Sharepoint.

In my argument I built a working prototype of the project they wanted in one weekend. A working prototype. Not just an HTML prototype. Using O'Reilly's Drupal book and my first download of MAMP. But it wasn't enterprisey enough. Didn't use SQL Server, and needed PHP on the server, and they wanted it to run in IIS not Apache, on Windows, because all that 'other stuff' like Linux and whatever, well that wasn't professional.

A year later the project was done in coldfusion because, um, they ... couldn't ... get ... sharepoint ... running ... right.

I only wish that when i started back in the early 90's there were the choices we have today. I might not be burned out on code, IT politics, and platform zealotry. This sounds like a GREAT place to start.

Event not on Digital Capital Week Schedule?

maybe I missed it, but I can't find the event in their listings. I even searched "drupal," "publishing," and "open publish."

Looking forward to seeing everyone tonight.

planning drupal sites

Maybe I can have less than 5 minutes to announce my recently opened online how-to Drupal resource? I am putting my planning book online at http://planningdrupalsites.com and thought I would let folks know the first four chapters are there and part of chapter 5 is up. This is a beta site so if you see an issue, please let me know by using the feedback feature.

Hands-on Introduction to Drupal

Last night I announced that Carla (from Bixal) and I are putting on a one day "build a Drupal site" course on July 10th. Here is the link to sign up http://drupalintroduction.eventbrite.com/ . This will be a packed day but don't worry, all the steps you take are documented for your convenience so that you can take what you learn and practice. You will use CCK and Views along with several other modules to create your site.
