Have just been introduced to Drupal and am finding the learning curve a bit steep. Perhaps the lack of a 10000-ft view.
Other eager-but-clueless types in DC for a meetup?
The sooner the better.

Help for beginners

I would welcome a meet up but hopefully with some folks that have a clue as well. I have basic set up more or less down but am struggling with the common contributed modules: views, cck, image, etc

Awaiting not quite beginners
Well, let's see if any more-seasoned folks reply. If not.... ?
My initial issues center more around figuring out big-picture items and what types of things are built-in versus what types need customizing. (I hate this stage of learning things.)

I don't know everything
I don't know everything about drupal but I've been working with it for 2.5 years; definitely holding my own. I'd be interested in meeting up, however I'd greatly prefer weekends as I live approximately 90 miles from DC. If you e-mail me via the contact form with your phone number I may be able to help you via phone in the interim.

Thx.

Drupal Meet Up

What is the format for a meet-up? A place with food and wi-fi and big enough for 20-30 people. How long does it last? Is there leadership and structure? or all informal? Assuming a weekend, what is the best time of day?
There is a nice place in Silver Spring called Myorga: coffee by day, drinks by night. It is large with various seating ranging from dining tables to overstuffed coaches. It is on Georgia Ave near the border of Washington. If that fits the bill I would be happy to arrange.

About time for a DC meetup
It has been a while since we've had a regular DC meetup and I'm willing to help organize one. Now that I am not living between two cities, I'm much more able to go into the city for a meetup. It has been a loooong time for me. Seems like we lost our regular meeting place so does anyone know of a good place that can fit a fair number of people (like 20-30 maybe?), has wifi and food/drinks?
I suspect that something that is first week of December-ish might be good so we can try to split all the holiday travel.

I'd be interested in having
I'd be interested in having a nice meetup monthly or even bi-weekly. One place may be Politics & Proses (http://www.politics-prose.com/coffeeho.htm). It's a nice environment, though it's not very large. The food prices are quite reasonable; though I'm not sure about alcohol for those interested.

Monthly was the plan
We used to have roughly monthly meetups but then we lost the spot at the Science Club where they used to be during the summer. The DC meetups could get quite large and so that is one of the problems with a location since we really do need space to comfortably fit 20-30 people and preferably allow us to do presentations (projector and screen/wall.)
I'm willing to make some calls and see if we can find a spot that won't kick us out. ;-)

i may have an option
Hi Addi and folks,
I have office space in Old Town near the Torpedo Factory. I may be able to get a large conference room that could fit 20ish. It'd be a little squishy, and I'm not sure if they are ok with after hours.

McLean, VA?
I definitely want to attend this meeting! While my Drupal based web site is still in beta, I am working hard to get it ready for public consumption and would like to learn what other people are doing with Drupal.
I have the better part of a decade of experience setting up and running meetings for volunteer groups, including NVTC and Netpreneur, and would be happy to help organize and publicize the meetup. I have access to a conference room that is available weekday evenings, and that will hold up to 100 people - the only downside is that the conference room is in McLean, VA rather than downtown. Food and drink are allowed in the conference room as long as we clean up after ourselves. I also have an LCD projector, and a WebEx account that will accomodate up to 10 attendees, should allow streaming video, and when combined with Skype will allow non-local folks to at least somewhat participate.
I don't mean to be a bull in a china shop and charge into the middle of this discussion, of course :-) .
Just let me know what I can do to help with the event!

Wow, that's an awesome room
That sounds like a great setup. Is it possible to get to the space from public transportation? We could also maybe do some car-pooling type of thing as well. I myself am coming from halfway to Baltimore so it will end up being a hike for me either way and I'm willing to pick folks up.
I'll check around and see what we can find downtown but if folks could weigh in on how well this would work for them we can keep this in mind too.

Meetup Locales
Sure would be great if meeting locations could be by a metro, if not in-town.
Car-free since '93.
Cheers,
Charlie
Some options
OK, I made a few calls. Here is a summary of potential spaces so far. I'll keep looking but how do you all feel about these so far and what day/time works? We could also do one on a weekday evening and then another on a weekend day if people are split or would like to have 2. :-)

Mayorga Coffee
Silver Spring, MD (about 5-10 min. walk from Silver Spring metro stop)
- Monday-Wednesday 7am - 9pm
- Thursday-Friday 7am - 10pm
- Saturday 8am - 10pm
- Sunday 8am - 8pm
I called and talked to them. They said they have plenty of room to accommodate a group of 20+ people. I suspect that not going on a "heavy" time like a weekend evening would be smart. We would also want to avoid times when they have live music playing - basically weekend evenings ;-). They have food, beer, coffee ad free wi-fi. No real space to set up with a projector though. They do have a parking lot as well for folks who are driving.
DC Public Library
901 G Street, NW, Washington (walking distance from Metro Center and Gallery Place metro stop)
- M - Th 9:30 am - 9 pm
- F, Sa 9:30 am - 5:30 pm
- Sun 1 pm - 5 pm
They have a room that will fit up to 40 people and will allow us to bring in food. They also have free wi-fi available. We need to reserve the room in advance and fill out an application. I'm not sure what the parking situation would be for folks that are driving since I've never had to park around there.

Washington Meet UP

Good work +1,
For selfish reasons I prefer Silver Spring, DC, NoVa in that order. But I can do any of them. Metro Accessible seems smart.
I am flexible on time. I have a standing engagement on Saturday morning and would prefer to avoid this time.
I have a projector as well.
The break out room at Mayorga should be fine for projecting. The room probably maxes out at around 25.
How long does a meet up last?

However long we want
I've been to meetups that lasted anywhere from 1 hour to 4 hours. Normally the "officially" part (presentations or Q&A) is about an hour or so and then people who want to just hang around and continue to socialize/share/work on things.

Dec 13th 6PM - 8PM ?
I have the conference room I mentioned reserved for a non-Drupal event on Dec 13 6PM - 8PM, and the event has to be rescheduled. The location (http://www.teqcorner.com/) is not, unfortunately, near a metro stop, but it is right off of the beltway and is about a mile to the east of Tysons Corner mall. I can repurpose the reservation to a Drupal event if you'all are interested in this date and location. I am not pushing this - I just had this opportunity surface and wanted to see what you'all thought.
If people want to socialize etc after 8PM, there are lots of options around Tysons Corner.
