Why I added this poll

robomalo's picture

I have put a lot of time into a project using buddylist. I wanted to see what others are using, so I added this poll. I am curious as to why all these efforts haven't been combined to make one great project. I haven't seen or heard anything about this except for this post http://groups.drupal.org/node/5233#comment-16247. Thanks for participating!

User Relationships

User Relationships is simply more flexible at this time from a development standpoint. It is lean and carries none of the Buddy List baggage.

Buddy List has a greater number of contributed modules, and its clear that there is an ecosystem that has developed around Buddy List. I would love to see these two modules merge in some way.

Biased, but honest answer

The User Relationships module was built to be lightweight and flexible. It's currently powering the OurChart.com social network as well as an upcoming project. There are a number of plugin modules providing added functionality and if there's anything that isn't part of the core set of plugins, developing one is relatively simple.

Thanks

Thank you both for your responses. After playing with some of the great features it offers, I have started to convert my project to one that utilizes user relationships. I am curious as to what everyone likes/dislikes about both of these projects. It would be nice to build an outline of the best and worst of both, then move towards one API. This of course should allow for porting existing sites regardless of which module set is currently being used.

Hey bro quick question, I tried pluffing in the buddylist module, it shows up and it's functional, but the invite doesn't work at all. Do you have any idea what I might be doing wrong????

Invite API

Did you download and install the Invite module: http://drupal.org/project/invite? Buddylist and User Relationships require the Invite API to use their invite features. I don't maintain these modules, but I am guessing this is where the problem lies.

Buddylist 2

I haven't used it yet, but Buddylist 2 was on my short list to be reviewed, along with the aforementioned modules. It seems to have a bunch of functions to roll your own UI's through Views or custom modules.

I've used Buddylist on a project, and wasn't particularly impressed with it. While it did work as advertised, it seemed somewhat inflexible and 'clunky'. Plus, I think the interface left something to be desired.

I like the ideas behind the User Relationships module, and I may be giving that a try with my next project...

Hi,

I voted buddylist2 just because at the moment User Relationships might be better in some respects, but the developer seems to have abandoned it.

I hope I am wrong because it was promising.

Merc.
