Drupal Positioning Statement Wiki

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.
You are viewing a wiki page. You are welcome to join the group and then edit it. Be bold!

In response to the long slogan thread, I have proposed that we come up a level and create a positioning statement for Drupal. Read this article for background, then come back here and join in.

Positioning Statement Template
1) For [target customers]
2) Who want/need [specific problem / compelling reason to buy/adopt]
3) Our product is a [name the product category in which you play]
4) That provides [key benefits that solve the problem described above]
5) Unlike [alternatives and competitors]
6) We offer [key differentiation]

You don't have to follow the template exactly in terms of form, but you do need to address each point directly and you do need to keep it to one paragraph. Don't type over other people's positioning statements - just liberally cut and paste, adding your variant below, so we can see them next to each other.

Web teams often struggle with the cost and complexity of building and integrating disparate systems for web content management, blogging, user generated content, wikis, and social networking. Drupal is a wildly popular social publishing platform that blends web content management and social media capabilities with a massive library of powerful extensions - all supported by a thriving open source community. Unlike proprietary content management systems, Drupal has no costly licensing fees or risk of vendor lock-in. Unlike other open source web content management systems and social media tools, Drupal offers a more elegant architecture, a richer extension library, and a larger open source community.

A slogan and an elevator pitch (30 second description of what a product is) are not mutually exclusive.

Drupal does need both http://groups.drupal.org/node/6943#comment-20457

They need to be tailored to different audiences. What appeals to a blogger is different than what appeals to a developer or an entrepreneur. So the message should be different.

Here are two Elevator pitches by GHOP students and one by Robert Fabian http://groups.drupal.org/node/7648

As part of their mandate, non profit and charitable organizations are required to effectively communicate their goals and achievements to key stakeholders. To meet these communication requirements in a digital age makes it is imperative for such organizations maintain a modern web presence that engages its stakeholders and builds a community of support. However, many organizations lack in house technical expertise to differentiate between web publishing products and fear that making the wrong choice will allocate often scarce financial resources in the wrong place. Drupal is a free open source web publishing and community building platform widely adopted by hundreds of small grass roots organizations and dozens of well know international organizations alike. Unlike proprietary content management systems, Drupal has no costly licensing fees or risk of vendor lock-in. Unlike other open source web content management systems and community building tools, Drupal has a massive community of volunteers well versed in the needs of non profit organizations and Drupal even has a distribution specifically designed to be an integrated solution for nonprofit websites.

In the dutch speaking Drupal community there has been efforts to position Drupal in dutch.
The dutch words are not copied here, instead I will do an attempt to write in english what we came up with. Hoping it will not be double dutch to you :)
Drupal:
. Offers extented ways to manage websites
. Offers powerful tools to build websites. Drupal is modular. Functionality to be downloaded directly, or easy to develop.
. Is free to use. No license costs. Drupal is open source software, available under General Public License.
. Used by many organisations to support their needs for information.
(Credits to the many people from who we have been reviewing their written words. They all have been contributing to how Drupal is will be presented soon on ........... (< I write the url as soon as the new dutch drupal community site has been launced)
