Initial proposal node type live!

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Just a quick heads up. There's now a "create proposal" link in the group sidebar, meaning the node type is live. I've configured it mostly to meet Ken's refined list of questions, but we can of course change this at any time. We also have fivestar ratings, which I've taken a stab at titling. Many thanks to Moshe for doing the heavy lifting here. Feel free to use this thread to suggest tweaks and changes.

If you want to fill out a test proposal, just mark it as such and one of us admins will clear it out shortly.

Some helpful links would be nice

I know a bit about the Knight foundation's goals from what I learned at DrupalCon. However before filling out a proposal, I'd like to review exactly what these are. But I can't seem to find them written anywhere. So my suggestions for this content type are:

Make "the stated goals of the Knight Foundation" a link to those stated goals (in the description of the "compliance with Knight goals" field).

Likewise "the goals of the Drupal project," make it a link to a page stating those goals.

Thanks and let us know when the time is right to submit proposals.

We're still waiting to get the text from Knight directly. More documentation forthcoming.

So easy to use ...

garykebbel's picture

The goals of this project are to turn Drupal into the primary publishing tool in any community's toolkit. That means making Drupal as easy to install as a new Mac. (Not a perfect analogy, but you get the point.)

We want to increase the number of people who can publish a web site about their passion without first hiring a specialist.

At one time, AOL's advertising slogan was, "So easy to use, no wonder it's #1." That's what we want to emerge from this project, a platform that's so easy to use no wonder everyone's using it.

More particularly, successful proposals will be those that take a six-step process and reduce it to two, and that take a process requiring hours of documentation reading and reduce it to the ease of installing a plug-in.

This project fits into Knight Foundation's larger goals of meeting the information needs of communities in a democracy. The Knight News Challenge is another way we go about trying to meet that need. As part of the Knight News Challenge, we have had a propensity to fund tool development because that's how we can enable more people to join the digital conversation. Those not participating in that conversation ultimately will be disenfranchised.

Is this the final copy?

Gary-

Is this the final copy you want to use, or do we need to boil it down some more. As I see it, there are the following points:

  • We want to enable more people to join the digital conversation; those not participating in that conversation ultimately will be disenfranchised.
  • We want to increase the number of people who can publish a web site about their passion without first hiring a specialist.
  • Drupal should be as easy to install as a new Mac (or easier).

about those macs...

In spite of all their advertising to the opposite, I find many aspects of Macs confusing and think we shouldn't tie ourselves to them.

How about something more like "enormously simple to install and use without sacrificing power nor flexibility."

Character Limits?

matthews's picture

It might be nice to have character limits (if feasible) on the fields to:

a) force users to be thoughtful about thinking through concise answers
b) to limit the amount folks need to read to make an assessment.

I know we don't want to turn this into an insanely complicated development process--so take this thought with a grain of salt.

Hm

Josh, the proposal content type is enabled for other groups. This is causing some confusion, perhaps, in SoC.

fixed. now it is not in the links in the group details block except for this group. it is still possible to create a proposal for a different group but i am not yet worried about that.

Review

agentrickard's picture

I am looking at the submission page and wondering:

-- Will people see the description text well enough to follow it?
-- Do we need two fields for "project goals"?

Below is a suggested revision to the node type, with description text in brackets.

Proposal summary
[Please describe your project's desired goals and outcomes, including the specific features and improvements that you propose.  <link to tips for writing a proposal>]

How does your proposal meet the stated goals of the <name of> program?
[<link to goals page>]

Who is the audience for your project?
[Please explain both the potential size and general skill level of the target audience.]

How long will your project take to complete?
[Please outline the general schedule for the development and delivery of your project.]

How will you implement and distribute your project?
[Please list the people and companies involved in the project, their roles and your preliminary
plan for releasing and marketing your work.]

What is your total budget and how much funding are you requesting?
[If you have other sponsorship or sources of funding, please list them here as well.  You may
list <private source> if you do not wish to reveal you funding sources at this time.]
