Can You Support this Meetup?

Initial post by Jennifer Dixey on 5/2/2015 7:50 PM

Hi everyone!

Meetup.com has changed their pricing structure. There are now two group sizes, "Small" and "Unlimited". Ironically, although the size of our in-person gatherings is fairly small, technically the size of our group dictates that we are now considered an "Unlimited" meetup (any meetup with more than 40 members is automatically charged as "Unlimited").

As such, our fees for meetup.com are now $89.94 every six months. This just renewed for the next six months. If you would like to support this meetup financially, please scroll down to the little "Chip In" link on the left hand side of the page. I am happy to pay $20 towards keeping this meetup going, so as soon as contributions reach $69.94 or more, I'll make another announcement letting you know that we're good for the next six months. Does that work for everyone?

There are alternatives to Meetup.com, including creating a free Facebook page, or just using the Drupal Groups group to organize our meetings and share information. If you want to suggest any alternatives, feel free to respond here, or send me a direct message via Meetup.com.

In the meantime, thank you in advance for any support you may want to provide to keeping this Meetup going on meetup.com :)

I would like to suggest an alternative. :)

I have been discouraged by the lack of participation lately (admittedly, I am guilty of this as well) and really miss seeing Rob and Max at the meetups. My feeling is that we don't need the meetup.com venue and expense -- groups.drupal.org should be sufficient for meeting announcements.

I used to live in Salt Lake City and for that reason have been lurking on the Utah DUG activities. Recently this DUG started collaborating using the free slack service. It seems to be working well for them.

I would like to suggest that we also start using slack. (If you are not familiar with slack, check out slack.com). I have taken the liberty of starting a slack team for us. Send me your email address (at wkeuffel [AT] gmail.com) and I will add you to the team. I suggest we try slack for a few months and then re-evaluate the future direction of the DUG.

I believe that by using slack we can meet virtually, support one another, and hopefully encourage further live meetings.

Hi Warren - Thanks for creating the Slack! Have at it. I will send you my email to join.

I don't know that it will increase our in-person attendance -- I think we need a space with a projector and a screen that we can use for real presentations and invite guests to present at. We were on track to do that at a venue for a while but it didn't work out, so we fell back to our coffeehouse origins. :) Perhaps after the summer we can re-group and figure out what's next.

As for turnout, well, it seems that we're a pretty high-end bunch, appealing to narrower range of hardcore developers and webmasters.. Maybe we can see if we can dislodge some more folk from the WWU campus Drupal community and coax them into coming. And maybe add Canvas to the mix to bring in the WCC/WWU folk? Start crashing the WebDevUnited group at Red Rocks and do some poaching? Add php to our topic mix? Just thinking out loud here..

As for a venue, I'm a fan of the Co-op.. the location, facilities and rates are great, but sometimes you have to schedule around evening Co-op classes. The downtown library might work, too, they're open until 8 on MTW. I can share my venue notes, I was wandering in the desert a few months ago and have fresh contact numbers if you're interested.

That's about it.. it looks like the group has hit the doldrums, time for a change of pace. I'll add ideas as I come up with them.

  • Jennifer Dixey replied 5/18/2015 9:47 AM

Thanks Ed! Your support and suggestions are appreciated. The group organizers have been working furiously behind the scenes to find a new venue and we are this close. What we've found with other venues is that setting up a regular location (for a meeting at the same time every month) is not all that achievable, unless we want to pay. Stay tuned for an announcement coming within a month or so (fingers crossed). In the meantime we will still show up at the same coffee house table for our regular chats!

Who's Going to DrupalCon?

Initial post by Jennifer Dixey on 4/29/2015 10:54 PM

Earlier this week I was able to confirm that I am going to DrupalCon for the second time, yay! Who else is going to be there? We should get a Bellingham group together at some point if there will be a few more of us there. Send me a direct message or just post here and track the discussion if you're going!

This sounds good, so I thought I'd share it with the Bellingham Drupalfolk. Feel free to organize here if there's a desire to put together a group trip.

Aaron Winborn

Initial post by Jennifer Dixey on 3/25/2015 7:45 PM

When I was first starting out with Drupal in late 2008, Aaron Winborn's book was one of the first that I picked up. Having come from the multimedia development world before I started doing web work, I was naturally drawn to a content management system that could handle multimedia content! The book didn't disappoint.

Today, I was sad to read that he has passed on. (Aaron was diagnosed with ALS in 2011, but continued to work in the Drupal community for as long as he could.)

There is now a new Drupal community award, the Aaron Winborn Award, that will honor individuals who are especially helpful to the Drupal community; and, in part, donate to a special needs fund for his family.

Read more in this announcement.

If you met or worked with Aaron, feel free to share your memories here.

PHPStorm questions

Initial post by Warren Keuffel on 3/4/2015 10:40 AM

Hi, just getting started with PHPStorm and I have a couple of questions:

  1. How do I create and use snippets of code? I have a very simple requirement for a SCSS comment block which I created in Prefs > Live Templates with a name of SCSS Comment and an extension of scss. When I am in my source code file I can't access this new snippet using Command-J. What am I doing right and/or wrong?

  2. How do I stop PHPStorm from saving a file that I am working on? I would like to be able to save the file only when I press Command-S.

Thanks!
Warren

"10 Things You Might Not Know about Drupal"

Initial post by Jennifer Dixey on 1/8/2015 10:16 AM

Well, you're a member of BDUG, so maybe you DO know these things, but it's still a great reference.
