Is there still an active Tidewater Drupal Group?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

As you can tell by this late

jerseycheese's picture

As you can tell by this late response (just saw your post), the Tidewater group is somewhat inactive. We had a meetup last summer but nothing since.

That said, I'm not a developer, but I am a themer currently working in the field. Always open to making connections, feel free to contact me at jack@johnhaas.com if you'd ever like to chat.

Still here

mu5a5hi's picture

I'm still around and still up for meetups.
Just got version one of our drupal site up in november.. then the holidays came and went, and I just got back from Drupalcon Chicago.

Interested in meeting other Drupalers

kricklin's picture

Hi -

I'm semi-retired so I have a lot of time to work with drupal and would enjoy the opportunity to meet with others who are using the tool as well. My first site is going live soon (after months of work), and I'm interested in sharing my experiences as well as learning from others. At this time I'm very interested in learning what I can to make drupal sites easier for average computer users updating content, as well as managing developer updates/versions as smoothly as possible.

So, if a meeting is in the works, please let me know and I'll do my best to swing by.

Thanks,

Ken

Meetups

mu5a5hi's picture

I am all for a (monthly?) local meetup. Even if its across the water from me as long as it starts at 7 or so I can do it cause the tunnel chaos is over by then. Location should be somewhere we can show sites on a screen if possible. Anyone have a location and want to propose some dates to get the next one going?

Jeff

Meetings - Followup

kricklin's picture

Hi -

Sorry not to have gotten back to you sooner on this as I'd like to participate in a local meetup. I live in Hampton so getting together on the Peninsula is pretty easy for me. Starting around 7:00 sounds good.

Ken

Oh man I wish we had kept up

mu5a5hi's picture

Oh man I wish we had kept up the meetups. Could've known you were there. I had a great time at drupalcon and learned a lot of stuff, but this time it was more about networking and meeting people/companies than learning. We're looking to do some kind of training or drupalcamp or something up at VT campus in the future so i as scouting for that.

You want to try to get the group together again? I liked the food at the pizza place, but we should probably go somewhere we can hear each other talk.

I think part of the reason I

mu5a5hi's picture

I think part of the reason I didn't press for more meetups was the whole 'Bridge-Tunnel' issue. I am always so paranoid about going across the water, afraid I'll hit traffic and be stuck in the car for hours.

Meet Up - Norfolk Group

Let's just put in a date for second week of May - I'm available on Tues or Wed.

Ellen

i've been posting on another thread, so i don't know if youve seen it - but i have a space we can use thats large enough and has wifi in downtown norfolk. email me at info (at) studioaarrgh.com and we can nail down a date.

Meet Up

I'm free on Tuesday or Wednesday as well and would like to meet other Drupal ninjas in the area :)

I've posted a link to this

studioaarrgh's picture

I've posted a link to this thread on the other, and given it to those who have privately emailed me. looks like may 10th or 11th is a good date, hows that sound to everyone else? What's a good start time? 7?

My office is located at 259 Granby St. Suite 250. Norfolk, Va 23510. I've got a large conference room with a 50" screen if we want to do any presentations. I'll spring for refreshments. Just let me know what people prefer.

Parking at MacArthur Mall and strolling over would probably be easiest for folks.

Oh, and I know a guy in

studioaarrgh's picture

Oh, and I know a guy in Richmond who was a core contributor during Google's Summer of Code who'd prolly be happy to come down and speak for us if anyone would be interested in that.

We should put a little agenda together, the last meetup was kinda free-form.

For example: Drupal 7: Who is dabbling, and your experiences so far

May 10th @ 7pm

That works for me.

Not going to be able to make

May 10th @ 7pm works for me too

joshcfischer's picture

Awesome. May 10th @ 7pm works for me too. Looking forward to meeting everyone.

@jerseycheese - I agree, an agenda is a great idea. I'm curious to hear what kinds of projects everyone is working on currently. Our team works with a few non-profits in the DC area, and some medical related facilities in HRO. I'd be happy to share some of our experiences with everyone.

I can be there and one other thing...

physicianspeace's picture

I think my drupal guy is struggling with my requests. There are functions that I want developed and maybe I'm assuming there should be some similarities with Joomla, but here is what I'm trying to do.

1) Create a "sidebar" image/text template with a background image that is expandable (vertically). This template can be copied and renamed with different content. Uses would be a Call to Action, submenu, pull quote, etc. My developer said he has to create a new one for each page. This seems cumbersome and inefficient.

2) A social media widget such as this one: http://www.physiciansforpeace.org/haiti-support.html code that can be copied and pasted where ever I want to have interaction no matter what page it is embedded.

Are these things possible?

Drupal Sidebars

kricklin's picture

Hi -

I think most of what you'd like to accomplish can be done with Drupal blocks, as they are perfect for displaying the kind of content you'd like to work with and can be used / re-used on any page(s) that you'd like.

For example, if you'd like to display a Call 2 Action on only the front page, the block would be designed to - for example's sake - link to the actual call to action page and then set up to only display on the front page (or any pages that you'd like). A submenu can be done the same way by creating a block that is displayed on only the pages you'd like the submenu to display on. I recently did similar blocks for upcoming events and reader polls.

While I've not worked with background images for blocks my understanding is this can be done as well.

Hope this helps,

Ken

Sidebars

physicianspeace's picture

Yes, I know those those functions work. What he hasn't been able to do is create a "template" for me. Each one has to be custom made. So if I want a new sidebar, he has to make it for me instead of me copying the block and creating a new sidebar. Is this possible?

Bock Templates

kricklin's picture

Hi -

Now I understand - sorry for the confusion on my part.

I've not come across this kind of functionality so I'm not sure if it's possible. Perhaps others in the group can be of assistance.

All the best,

Ken

are you using drupal 6 or 7?

studioaarrgh's picture

are you using drupal 6 or 7? i believe setting up a custom panel in 7 would do what you are looking for. it's a little trickier in 6, i'd have to look at your site to get a sense of how its being handled there. do you have some time to discuss by phone? if so, email me at info@studioaarrgh.com and i'll get you my contact number.

Panels...or CCK with Views...

joshcfischer's picture

I agree with Jeff on the Panels. That sounds like a good option.

If that doesn't work, another option might be to set up a custom CCK form for your needs, design a custom View that would function as the template and would know how to handle the info you put into the form, and then display the results in a Block. Depends how complex your needs are.

As for the Social Media panel, I think you can solve your problem with the Facebook comments tool - http://developers.facebook.com/docs/reference/plugins/comments/

Or you can always turn comments on in Drupal. But unless your user has log in rights, they would always be "anonymous". Facebook might be a better option too because of the marketing potential.

Josh Fischer
www.artsmithmedia.com

yeah, setting up a clonable

studioaarrgh's picture

yeah, setting up a clonable view that pulled in a custom content type is prolly the way to go in 6

Thanks Guys!

physicianspeace's picture

No worries, Ken. Maybe I need to give my drupal guy more credit.

Joomla makes this task very easy. My previous joomla developer would create one templated block (weather it was a banner, header, sidebar, footer, etc. and I was able to customize multiple versions from that one template using different backgrounds, css, etc. It also made creating microsites very easy.

Looking forward to chatting with you pirate guy (I forgot your name...deepest apologies).

Ellen

I see that a couple of group members...

kricklin's picture

... have offered some promising suggestions. Both Panels and CCK sound intriguing. I'd be very interested in hearing what approach you take when the time comes.

I plan on attending next Tuesday's meetup so if you're there I'll make a point of saying "hello".

Take care,

Ken
