Occasionally an open source project gets sponsorship through user donations. Drupal modules sometimes arrive paid for by sponsors. How do you request sponsorship through drupal.org?
I have a couple of modules under consideration for conversion to Drupal. They have sponsors who have no need for Drupal based versions. For one of them, I could carry some of the cost myself but not all of it. What I am thinking is several hundred people putting in $10 each. Are sponsorship requests like that successful on drupal.org? What are the other ways to cover some costs?

Off-topic?
This seems maybe a little off-topic for the "Contributed Module Ideas" group, as it's not really an idea for a contributed module. The Consulting and Business group seems more appropriate.

Some people put up Chipin pages and point to them. Some post a reverse bounty. Honestly, though, neither works all that well. I have a module with 16K users and a Chipin and I've gotten enough from it to cover about 3 of the hundreds of hours I've put into it.

San Francisco video on the subject
I discussed this topic in San Francisco on a panel with Eric Gunderson and Michael Meyers: http://sf2010.drupal.org/conference/sessions/strategies-community-contri...
Maybe the video will have some items of value?
