Hello Drupalers,

Katy's thread prompted me to install XAMPP on my Windows XP workstation with a vhost configuration. I've also got an Ubuntu 8.04 desktop with XAMPP installed as a VM on my workstation as well.

  • What do the Ubuntu developers use for graphics and illustration?
  • I'm wondering what people use for version control (I installed subversion on Ubuntu).
  • I'm also interested in version control processes people use when the site is a CMS (i.e. not static).
  • What other tools do you folks use?

Thanks,

Andrew

Eclipse and SVN

mackh's picture

Hi

I use SVN for version control, and there are a bunch of Eclipse IDE options with are free.

Check out
Aptana http://aptana.com/ - a eclipse based php/ajax focused install
Subeclipse http://subclipse.tigris.org/ - embed SVN perspectives into eclipse based IDEs

Eclipse can be configured to provide XAMPP controls in the IDE which some folks could find handy.

Check out the "drupal eclipse" post for some other options - http://groups.drupal.org/node/8116

Ubuntu Development Environment

Andrew:

I'm running my development environment on a Xubuntu (Ubuntu variant) 6.06 virtual machine running under VMWare Server (http://vmware.com/) on an Ubuntu 7.04 host. The virtual machine I'm using is called Grandma's LAMP (http://canned-os.blogspot.com/2006/10/grandmas-lamp-its-easy-enough-for....). I added Drupal 5 and 6.

For graphics I use the GIMP and InkScape under my host Ubuntu 7.04 (http://ubuntu.com).

love ubuntu

rjdempsey's picture

I've tried eclipse/pdt/subeclipse/aptana on ubuntu, but I'm quite happy and comfortable with Vim at the moment. I've got xdebug and Vibrant Ink colors happening on Vim and I love it.

Graphics... I still boot up Vista for that stuff. I tried the GIMP on linux, but I just can't get into it. I've been using Photoshop/Illustrator for many years and dropping it would be like losing an arm. I'm going to buy a Mac for all the designy, graphics and media stuff.

Other than that, the only other things I use daily are evernote, xchat and twitter. :P

Oh, and get firebug. Essential.

Komodo

Komodo IDE and Komodo Edit run on Linux, as well. I'm happy with the Windows version. Haven't tried it on a Linux distro.

shell scripts

aufumy's picture

I find little shell scripts sometimes helpful, for comparing files, performing bulk actions, etc.
e.g. to grab/update a module from cvs assuming that the latest tag for drupal5 is DRUPAL-5, run ./myscript.sh pathauto

#!/bin/sh
cvs -z6 -d:pserver:anonymous:anonymous@cvs.drupal.org:/cvs/drupal-contrib checkout -d modules/$1 -r
DRUPAL-5 contributions/modules/$1

cron jobs could be used to update a dev version of drupal from cvs

when I am working on a particular project, I edit my init script, e.g. .bash_rc so that when I open terminal I end up in that directory "cd ~/www/abc.com/trunk/modules/custom/mytestmodule/"

rsync on rare occasions if the files directory is ignored under subversion, and you need to view the latest images/files uploaded

my turn to gloat, and WTB

I'm resurrecting this thread to boast of my new triumph. I now has a new Mac Book Pro with all the extra option maxed.

While I love ubuntu, I (once I get Photoshop for mac) no longer have to switch over to my vista box for Photoshop. I can do everything on one machine, and that makes me very happy.

Which brings me to the real reason I'm posting. Is there anybody out there able to help me (nice and legally) find a copy of creative suite 3, or just Photoshop? Know any good deals? I'd be into buying second hand.
