After a short discussion with the powers that be at the University of Lethbridge, I have full approval to host Drupal Camp Alberta 2008 in June or early July.
Our facilities are top notch http://www.uleth.ca/conference/ (open WIFI, theatres, breakout rooms, entertainment and fitness facilities, AND campus housing summer rentals) - so we are going to take the bull by the horns and spread the word.
I know the organizers for DCV08 put it together at the speed of light, we are going to follow suit.
Site coming soon with a call for speakers! If you'd like to present, participate and network your butt off - let me know!

If it's late June I might be able to squeek it in, we'll see. Definitely interested though!

Thanks for your response! We are looking at dates today, and will have solid details later this week.
We'd love to have you!

Maybe try not to overlap DrupalCamp Seattle?
Because they're at the end of June. I know early July runs into Canada Day, but end of first week of July? Just a suggestion, but maybe get some feedback from potential attendees early...
Great Suggestion
Hi Boris,
I hadn't even thought of that, thanks for jumping in!
We are going to be moving at light-speed for planning, now that we have backing from the University for facilities and volunteers.
Originally, we intended to keep July out of it - because we are so close to the USA border, and July 4th is apparently a big of a show down South :-)
We'll keep DC Seattle as a factor, I'm sure if we don't overlap it - we'll be able to get broader participation from the community.

Another thing would be end
Another thing would be end of the year allocations / department budgets. I can't remember when our fiscal year ends but I know that they usually wrap up shortly for a lot of people and it's probably easier for educators to spend end of the year funds that are left over then to spend begining of next budget's funds that are new and dedicated to the year's projects.

Yes, I know that game well :-)
Our fiscal year end was March 31. I know its an easier push to dump surplus budget than to pitch for new money ;-)
Cool News!
Michael, that's very cool news, and I'm jealous of the facilities!
FWIW, I didn't find the Vancouver organizing hard as in difficult but it's definitely time consuming so hard on the schedule. Compressing the organizing time means you can't spread out the commitment. Make sure at least one of the organizers has open blocks for dealing with the time critical stuff.
If I can be of any help, let me know.
You have some famous dead dinosaurs nearby, don't you? Velica-Drupla-Raptor logo?
Thanks Dale
It's looking good - we plan to formally launch a site after the weekend (we are theming up a storm right now). We did however pick a date - July 3,4 - which is AFTER Seattle, and happens to fit the schedule of one of our main presenters (who is coming from Edmonton).
Luckily, we've got 8 volunteers to help spread the load around. I'd love to have some help in the promotion (blogging? twitter?) once we have a solid site up, and a few more kinks worked out.
Re: Dinosaurs - We've got mountains, and the USA less than an hour away and one of the largest urban park systems in our river valley. But no Dinos that I know of (they are a little farther North, in Drumheller). We've got a logo and a site design cooked up, but are in the processes of writing content and porting the static design to a drupal template.

Once the details are firmed
Once the details are firmed up a little and the site is up, I'll make sure the Calgary Linux Users Group hears about this, and probably get it posted onto their website.
Great!
Thanks for your support, there's alot of hype starting already.
The speaker support is crazy already, and we haven't even launched details!
I sincerely appreciate your offer to help get the word out, we are on target for a Monday launch (but of course all the juicy details will hit groups.drupal.org first).

Shout out if you need any
Shout out if you need any assistance. I'm one of the planners for the Calgary LinuxFest/COSSFEST, and have access to the other planners and some related resources. I'll watch to see what you put up on the site though. Btw CLUG's monthly meeting is next Wednesday, so the timing is good if you can get the site up for Monday-ish... (no pressure - really... but is it done yet??? LOL)
Sounds good. The bones of
Sounds good. The bones of the site is together at this point (registration system, mapping module) - we are just being vain and wasting our time on a custom theme :-)
Monday shouldn't be a problem. We went from a wireframe and user personas on Tuesday to a full blown visual mockup Wednesday, and a static template today - now comes the fun part - making Drupal look a little less like Garland.
With your help, we can grow the attendance from Calgary - its a nice relaxing drive, I do it almost every second weekend (gotta get my IKEA fix).

drupal camp in Lethbridge
Hey Michael,
Great to hear you're putting on a Drupal Camp. One of our guys (Daniel) has already been in touch with you about helping out. But if you're in need of more presenters, let me know and I'll chat with the guys and see if anyone's game to head out and help you out.

Thanks Glen!
Our first order of business on Monday is a call for Speakers. We'd love any support we could get from your talented team!
We tentatively plan on having three tracks. 1) Developer 2) Design / Theming and 3) Web Industry. We'll have an initial list of topics to generate some ideas for talks, but we're open to anything Drupal-centric.
M.
Glenn, If you've got 'em - I'd love 'em!
We wrapped up our call for speakers yesterday, and we've got a great turnout for our first Alberta event.
Here's the initial bunch:
I know we've got a solid event planned, but if you can spare anyone else - it would really help round out DCA08.
Let me know, thanks!

Site is up! http://www.drupalcampalberta.org
It's 70% themed and held together by Dreamhost's "duct tape and string" hosting package, but the official website of Drupal Camp Alberta 2008 is up and live! With a liberal "borrowing" (it's OK, I asked him) of Dave O's (Rain City) content - we are on the air and ready to rock.
Join in, submit a talk - say hello!
We are holding fast for a July 3,4 launch in Lehtbridge Alberta Canada - Call for Submissions ends June 10.

Hey Daniel, thanks for the kind words.
I'm almost 100% certain that we will need extra hands. Getting the site up and live was the first stage - it's all promo and organization from here.
I'll get in touch when we have roles defined a little better.
Thanks!
M.
Registration is now Open!
I'm not sure if its the smoothest solution, but our registration solution for DCA08 is open and limited to 200.

See you there!
