February Sprint/Event? (Code for America coming to Seattle)

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hi Seattle Drupalers! Chach and I are doing this thing called Code for America (some of my thoughts on the program). This means we will be in Seattle for all of February! And we are both very much into meeting other Drupalers face to face. And just maybe you can help us out with Code for America somehow. So, a few questions and thoughts.

1) When will the Drupal User Group happen in February? I don't see anything about a specific date each month on this group. Also, we are a big fan of the Drupal Happy Hour if anyone is up for that.

2) We will be trying to run "Hack Days" each Friday that will focus on getting developers and people interested and related to development (aka Hackers) together to talk and code around civic issues and APIs. Seattle has some great open data. I'll update this with concrete info when it becomes available.

3) I (and I would assume Chach) would love to try to get a Drupal specific sprint going. This doesn't have to be around government (but could be). We just love Drupal. It could look like:

  • a code sprint around a specific area, like maybe upgrading contributed modules to D7
  • a code sprint around creating a Drupal module to integrate with Seattle's open data
  • a documentation sprint; this could be writing handbook pages, creating videocasts, making visual diagrams, etc.
  • a code sprint around writing tests
  • a sprint around how to write patches and getting into core development
  • a sprint focused around Git and learning how to utilize it, or maybe just basics on interacting with the Drupal community (like IRc and issue queues)

Thoughts? Ideas? Anyone know of good spaces to use for these types of events? Can't wait to meet everyone.

Some more long-time members

Some more long-time members may chime in but, user-group meetings are usually on the third Thursday of the month. Same time and location as the previous few meetings... I like your idea for a sprint and I'd participate depending on the time and date.

I can think of one local non-profit that would be excited for a free Drupal site to organize their ~1200 weekly meetings and to allow user submitted/ edited events. For Drupal learning though, my plug would be Drush or writing tests. They sound like great ideas.

FuseIq is a local Drupal group that would like to support the community more. If we can host a meeting downtown let me know. The space holds about 12, wi-fi, projector, south foot of Queen Anne.

Can't Wait!

Think we're talking about doing some sort of Startup Weekend/DataCamp/Community Build towards the end of the month (consolidating/time resources.)

On a weekend :)

More soon.

Sprint++ hacking--

jhodgdon's picture

Hey there, I'd probably be up for attending a generic sprint and helping new contributors find things they can work on productively, in core Drupal coding and documentation. Your other sprint ideas sound fun too, but I'm not sure which ones I would actually attend.

I'm also not sure about scheduling. If you're planning a weekend event, you will probably get more attendance, but some of us (such as myself) prefer not to work on weekends (and Drupal counts as work for me). You could do a poll to figure out dates.

I'm not fond of the term "hacking" and prefer the term "coding". :) We also have "co-working" time before our monthly meetings, so that's a term that's in use here in Seattle.

Finding space for events is sometimes problematic. The best bet recently has been spaces like StartPad (shared office spaces) that people attending the sprint have connections to, or getting a company (like FuseIQ who volunteered above) to offer their conference room. For co-working, we go to a coffee shop near where we have our monthly meetings (those are in a space at Adobe that may be available after 5pm and I have no idea about weekends). There's a recent thread (within the last 3 months anyway I think) on the Seattle group about Dojo that has some meeting space ideas on it too, so you might look for that.

hacking

zzolo was making fun of me the other day about saying hacking, then he started saying it. these ruby people we are near all day - they keep saying it. (and I never used to say it before this week) so thank you. every time I say hack, please smack me. :)

build - code - create

Community preference on terms...

jhodgdon's picture

Yeah. In Drupal-land, it seems like the community uses the term "coding" mostly, but I've certainly been in other software communities where "hacking" is the norm. WordPress, for instance... When in Rome... :)

Take Back the Hack...

mikeker's picture

Ever since the media started using the term hack to describe a security breach and hackers as the bad dudes who exploit security vulnerabilities I feel like I've lost one of my favorite terms. A hack used to be a clever fix, tinkering with a system to customize it. Alas, no more... too bad as that's exactly what we as open source developers do.

I guess I need to start a publicity campaign to take back the hack! grin

Hey zzolo - Feb's going to be

arianek's picture

Hey zzolo -

Feb's going to be busy prepping for Drupalcon, but if it's on a weekend mid-monthish, I'd consider coming down for it (would depend partly on the topic matter of the sprint, and how busy work is too). I'll keep an eye on here to see how plans progress!

Love the idea of sprints

mikeker's picture

Love the idea of sprints around D7 upgrades of modules (as I still have much of that to do myself), writing test and anything Git-related. My preference would be during regular work hours as I get in with the family if I spend too much of the weekend working... But I'm guessing I'm in the minority on that.

Thanks for starting the discussion!

"Code and Cook" and/or Drupal Happy Hour

zzolo's picture

So, its hard to please everyone on this. Due to time constraints and DrupalCon, it seems like it would be difficult to pull together a real formal sprint.

My initial proposal is that we do a really informal meetup on a saturday that is kind of an all day, come as you go, code and share snacks event. I like the idea of having people over the CfA house and cook and code together, but not everyone may be comfortable with coming over to our house. Maybe we can do this somewhere else.

Personally, for me it would just be nice to meet everyone earlier in the month as well as get some collaboration going. Maybe this is better served as just a Drupal Happy Hour early into Feb. Any ideas on this? Some place that doesn't completely exclude non-drinkers.

Also, we will probably be having a bigger event at the end of the month to get lots of people form the civic and technology side together to hopefully spark some lasting communication. There are still lots of details to figure out on this, but we'll let you know as it comes together.

DataCamp! Saturday February 19 in downtown Seattle

chachasikes's picture

We've figured out some details for an event! Yay!
It's on February 19 and it is going to be totally fun.

For anyone who would like to come, the morning will have time for demos & workshops (skill building)
In the afternoon, time to work on projects.

Alan & I will be at the Drupal Meetup on Thursday. This week, we are gathering project ideas, to try to make sure we have some resources available for the afternoon projects on the 19th. My goal for the week is to get a list of possible projects, including Drupal projects, folks could work on that afternoon...and beyond. The focus is on helping communication & information sharing between Seattle civic leaders & the city. Projects can range from spending a few hours improving documentation about using a technology (ex. event posting to community calendars) to geeking out making use of city data.

Hope to see you there!

A day of workshops and hands-on civic geek projects in support of Open Data initiatives in the City of Seattle.

Who?
Open to everyone: local techies/designers/developers/geeks, community organizers, hyperlocal bloggers, journalists, urban planners, city staff, friends of Government 2.0 and interested citizens.

Why?
City governments have a lot of information which is useful to all of us. This ranges from maps of local parks to building footprints to real-time 911 calls. We all have an interest in our budget information, legislative documents and other resources that we use in collective decision-making and deliberation. Not all of this information is currently available for all cities, even though much of it is public record. The “Open Data” movement is a way to work on getting information into machine-readable formats, allowing for easy publishing, sharing, and reuse. We’re hosting DataCamps in CfA’s cities this year to build communities around making city data more open and accessible to allow citizens to help cities work better. DataCamp is a event focusing on skill-building and collaborative work on city data. It is an opportunity for interested parties in a city to work together, and build a network of people with shared interested in improving civic communications and information management.

Morning
Short workshops and presentations by participants.

Afternoon
Time to collaboratively work on technical projects.

Where
Socrata Office
101 Yesler Way, Suite 502
Seattle, WA 98104
