Hi,
you extract the Quickstart package after download. It should contain
- Quickstart 0.x.mf (checksums),
- Quickstart 0.x.ovf (xml file with config),
- Quickstart 0.x.1 (file with image).
Run Virtual box
Click on File - Import (or CTRL-I) and select the Quickstart 0.x.ovf file. You might want change the destination of new image file on next dialog. You should leave default values of all theother things. You have to wait to finish the import (it copies 1GB file) after that.
Then select Quickstart image and click on start. After couple minutes of booting you have complete developer's enviroment under Ubuntu.
Mike
How to extract
Hi nik0cara,
To extract the files from your bittorrent client, you may need to right-click the torrent, then select "Open Folder" to find them.
Good luck!
Mike
Watch the videos
The videos are a great way to get started.
Mike: Thanks a lot, great job!
Please notice the video channel link is broken on this page, it's http://http://.....

drupal newbie
hi, I am just starting out on drupal. so great to have an installation which has the dev environment setup readily.
But I wanted to start on drupal 6, Does QuickStart 0.9 support 6.0, i.e. do I need to do any hacks to get it working.
Thanks,
jackdive
Core = 6.x on .make
Just by updating the line "core = 7.x" to "core = 6.x" in the default.make file should be sufficient - I'm assuming this version didn't change the way to build websites from the previous ones.
Notice that the modules used in the projects[] entries must exist for the core version you decide to use.
Core = 6.x on .make
cool, thanks jedihe.
url torrent
Hi there,
I can't find any working url for the torrent.
Anyone can give me one ?
(the one given by Mike does not work for me - neither yesterday nor today)
TIA !

@nik0cara: Please read the post. Your answer is in the links there.
@jcdenaes: Please read the post. Your answer is in the links there.
torrent url
Hi Mike,
Sry for my ambiguous sentence.
I was not saying that I cannot download the torrent,
I mean I cannot not access your page to download the file for the torrent (michaelcole.com ... /Quickstart 0.9.torrent)
It says (chrome + Firefox) : "could not connect to www.michaelcole.com"
Any idea ?
(tia)

Oh, ok. Hmmm.....
Can you browse to the site in a web browser? E.g. just http://www.michaelcole.com It's hosted by Amazon AWS, there shouldn't be a general networking issue, but maybe there is.
My first guess is that a content filter at your ISP is preventing you from downloading .torrent files. Have you downloaded other .torrent files?
Try these URLs:
As .zip
As .tgz
Your ISP may further complicate the download process using packet filtering, so you may need to tweak the settings of your torrent client. I'd generally recommend turning on encryption.
Mike
It didn't but...
I tried, nothing.
Interesting thing : I asked a neighbour to borrow his line since he is with another ISP.
I tried at his place with my laptop (OSX) and his computer (WinXP).
It still did not work with mine, but worked with his.
So it is not ISP related, but cleary my computer. Well, almost, here is the thing I tried afterward :
- OSX (Firefox + Chrome) : Fails
- Ubuntu [mine + Quickstart] (VirtualBox; Firefox + Chrome ) : Fails
- WinXP (VMware Fusion, Firefox + Chrome) : Works
Well, if I had knew... I should have try first with winXP...
Still, it is not hardware related, but I cannot guess what's wrong...
If anyone has any idea, I am interested.
At least, I know now I will use winXP to go on your website !
In the end, I was able to download Qs9 and it works really fine
Great box, Fine job, thx for all !

Torrent with 0 seeds/peers
Hello,
I'm trying to download version 0.9 but there are 0 seeds, 0 peers. On the other side 0.8 works ok.
Is there anyone who can start seeding?
Thanks
try now
Right now there are 10 people offering the torrent. I'm downloading it again now, so I can contribute it later.

Any Seeders out there?
I would like to download, but currently 0 Seeders, 0 Peers.
Can anyone help?
Cheers.
About seeding
There are at least 12 seeds out there that my client is connected to. Please check the configuration of your client/firewall, and/or have patience as your client connects to them..
Mike
Awesome
Just setup the VM and ran through the debugging video. This is a HUGE time saver! Thanks!
Quickstart as host OS (not a VM)
Quickstart is so useful. I'm thinking of deploying it directly to my hard drive and dual booting. Anyone have any experience doing this? Is there any image available that can be deployed with some sort of software like clonezilla, mondo, partimage. I'm thinking I may have to follow this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=581680.

Quickstart Dual-boot
Hi guys,
Interesting idea on the dual-boot. This is outside Quickstarts design goals, but I think you could follow the "Building a Quickstart Virtual Machine" guide to accomplish this: http://drupal.org/node/788994. I would comment out the "slim" script, as you wouldn't have to worry about space.
The goals of Quickstart are:
Dual-boot breaks these design goals. Doesn't mean dual-boot is bad, just not part of the project :-)
If you write up some steps on how to do this, let's add them to the handbook.
got it
well portability is a rocking feature. I just use my 16gb usb drive, and move my whole job from one computer to other. Even the machine state!
That is nice because I have phenom II x6 with enough memory on both locations (home and office)
The idea of making a linux distribution with drupal dev environment all set up is already out there. I can remember at least drubuntu project http://drupal.org/project/drubuntu
maybe we can talk to drubuntu fella, and make some kind of cooperation with him.
Insultar en Internet es como correr autos en calle publica: Aunque ganes, sigues siendo un idiota.
Thanks for the drubuntu info
Thanks for the drubuntu info and quickstart build instructions (http://drupal.org/node/788994). It looks like quickstart has more customizations than drubuntu. I think the quickstart build instructions would get me part way there, aside from the manual config. Thanks again.
Personal experience
The reasson I started using quickstart but never tried drubuntu is because it is easier to try.
Only to imagine reinstalling while I have work to do, is enough to make me try another direction.
I know that it is tempting to try quickstart as a native environment. But you have to try it first as VM, and only then think again if you really wish to make it another way.

In about 2005 (I think) I
In about 2005 (I think) I started using Ubuntu as a full replacement for Windows. It was around the time of Dapper Drake. I kept using it until mid 2009, but switched to Windows 7 RC for some college classes and then stayed with Windows 7 having been able to secure some free and cheap versions around the time of release. Anyway, so I have used Ubuntu natively and it just performs so much better than the VM (which I've also been using and it is great). I have a Core 2 Duo laptop with 4GB of RAM, so I've been thinking of upgrading to 8 GB but that will cost me about $140 per my latest query at newegg (unfortunately ddr2 800 sodimms are about double the cost of the ddr3). That's why I've been considering the native install, as performance can be a drag, especially trying to run netbeans. Do you think the RAM would result in a noticeable improvement? I see you have a phenom, so probably 4-6 cores I guess?
more than 4gb->64 bits
I know there are workarounds on ubuntu to address more than 4 gb of ram. But if I'm going to buy more ram, it's better to switch to 64 bits.
Now, Mike recommends using solid state drives as it is the hard drive the major bottleneck.
Yep, I have a thuban x6 black, with 16gb ram, ASUS AMD 890FX at the office and x6 thuban black with 4gb at home. NOTE: if you are not going to use the gamer's overcloacking features, it's better not to buy the 890FX mobo
http://www.amazon.com/AMD-Phenom-Thuban-Six-Core-Processor/dp/B003FVI2KQ...
this stuff just rocks.

what file format are you using on the usb drive?
What file format are you using on the usb drive to support large files and portability with different OS?
I think it is fat32
I'm not sure...
I don't have the OS problem given that I only use ubuntu 10.04 LTS and 10.04 64
BTW, Michael: do you have any recommendation on the file system for the solid state drive? The virtual machine says it have some errors with ext4 so I/O cache must be enabled. Should I go for ext3? How do you plug your SS? is it an external device?
Insultar en Internet es como correr autos en calle publica: Aunque ganes, sigues siendo un idiota.
Quickstart Performance
Hi,
For the file system, ext3 should be fine. Ext4 is newer, so unless you want to debug the file system and virtualbox working together, better to go conservative.
For the SSD, I recommend internal, and as the boot and system drive for the host OS, also storing all the vbox data.
For memory, I run 8gb of memory, and guests seem to use about 1.9g max.
For cpu, I have a Phenom II x4 955 CPU. For stability, my guests use only 1 cpu, and I don't experience a big performance difference between host and guest.
The most important "spec" for performance seems to be 280mb/s read and 180mb/s write on the SSD. Spending $350 for 128GB seemed excessive, until I tried it and realised how frickin slow HD's are - and that I'd been wasting money on CPU and memory for years, even though HD r/w was the bottleneck.
I'm a big fan of the "best of previous generation" hardware, and bought my current rig in fall 2009. So anything "new" after 2008 should work well - with a SSD.
My next build, I want to RAID two SSD's together for 460mb/s, which I'm pretty sure makes me a big nerd :-)
Good luck!
Mike
just following up on this with my experience
I found it isn't very difficult to format usb flash drives with NTFS. This provides Windows support for files larger than 4.2 GB and is readable by other OS including Linux.
http://www.online-tech-tips.com/computer-tips/format-usb-ntfs/
This works for Quickstart on a usb flash drive but I think I'll have to wait until I have usb 3.0 ports and flash drives for this to be adequately fast enough.
Still no seeds
Please seed this torrent. i've been waiting for four days and its only on 0.4%. seeds sitting at 0 for the last couple days.
You're doing it wrong!
Hi,
My client can see 20 other seeds and has seeded 75gb. Please check your client and firewall.

I was!
Changed my torrent client. downloading now, should be done in a couple hours at this rate. THANK YOU!!!
