Hello,
I did a quick search on drupal.org and have found that mentoring for those who are relatively new to Drupal do exist in other regions, but can't seem to find anything in the San Francisco area.
I do attend SFDUG meetings and also ask some questions on IRC, but currently I have several and some are too detailed to ask in these settings. I am developing 3 sites - one is mostly complete and another is pretty far along but it has taken me a year to get to this point as it is a fairly complicated site. The 3rd site is being developed in D7 (which rocks by the way!) and it is going pretty well, though there are always questions, questions, questions.
Any ideas on where to look for a mentor? I'm also willing to do work trade/barter if that helps.

Thanks, Shawn, I appreciate the info. SFDUG is great and I'm sure the Berkeley equivalent would be as well. So far I've found that it seems most of the discussions are more general / for a wide audience than some of the specifics that I'm looking for. I'll keep trying. Not giving up hope yet :)

In my opinion, best way to get a mentor is to go intern for a company (or become a student at a school that uses Drupal (e.g. San Francisco State Univeristy and work or intern for them). read yes you will need probably have to work for free in order to get the mentor you want
Very few people with the necessary Drupal skills to mentor you have the time to sit around doling out advice for free, you need to provide them with a service.

Yes, I completely understand that very few people would have time for this sort of thing, but I had to explore the options. I've used up my budget (paying freelance contractors for help) for this one particular site but still need to finish it. As I said I attend meetups and have gotten a few questions answered on IRC, which is a wonderful resource. I don't want to be a constant pest there, though. Bad karma!
And I am totally willing to work for free which is why I mentioned work trade / barter. Maybe that wasn't clear, but it is what I was intending.
I think that Drupal is a fantastic technology and want to contribute back as soon as I can. I am interested in working on documentation efforts and hope to become a mentor to beginners--once I am up to speed, of course.
At first, Drupal seemed really easy, the modular concept, etc. but as I got farther into it, I realized how dense and detailed it can be. At DrupalCon SF, there was much talk about expanding Drupal to a wider circle, Drupal vs. Wordpress, etc., and in my opinion, the way to do that is to try to make things easier for newbies and the less technically-inclined site builders.

I volunteer for the East Bay Professional Experience Network (A "job club" going back 50 years) in downtown Oakland. I was turned on to Drupal last March, so I am by no means the most experienced Drupal designer. However, I've lived and breathed Drupal (mostly 6.x, just getting into 7.x now) for the last 10 months.
