I just joined this group today 4/30/11. I am also relatively new to Linux,, started with Ubuntu 9.10 dual booting with windows, starting with Ubuntu 10.4 LTS Lucid Lynx I do not dual boot with windows I only use Ubuntu, and I just created a Drupal Account today. I had created a website around August of 2010 with an open source WYSIWYG editor called Wix.com. It is mostly a static website for my general practice law firm. I also created a Blog at Wordpress.com ( edwardddowlingivattorneyatlaw.wordpress.com) in January of 2011 and have written about 25 articles so far. I have been reading about Wordpress, Joomla and Drupal in order to decide which CMS to use to create multiple sites with one installation. I decided to use Drupal because from my reading I got the impression that although it may not be the easiest to install and use ( supposedly WP is easiest but least flexible and Joomla is in between WP and Drupal ) but I understand it is the most customizable and if take the time to learn it, it is the best in long run, especially for multisite setup. However from my reading of the various methods to setup and configure Drupal for Multisite such as Drubuntu, Quickstart virtual host, Aegir, Drush, manually installing AMP stack, using Xamp, Drupal multisite feature, etc, I have not determined which method is the best ( not necessarrily the easiest ) to use. Any guidance would be appreciated. I am also interested to know if the group will be having any inperson social/Drupal business meetings/events. Thank you for any guidance and information. Welcome to the Drupal community! Glad to hear you are looking at Drupal for your web needs. In my opinion Drupal is by far the most flexible open source CMS on the net today... but it is not the easiest to learn and master!
I think before you start getting into multisite configurations you want to get your feet wet with the basic operations of Drupal. The easiest way to do this is through Drupal Gardens, http://www.drupalgardens.com/. There you will be able to setup a Drupal 7 site in no time and get familiarized with the basic Drupal flow.
I am curious why do you think you need to have a mutisite configuration?
We are just getting started here has well as a Long Island Group. I would like to eventually have meetups on the island to share our work with Drupal... :)
