Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

The following files are essential to translating the core drupal interface and installation interface.

In each file place the relevant malayalam words in:
msgstr ""

Resources:
http://drupal.org/project/drupal-pot
http://drupal.org/node/11130
http://ml.wikipedia.org
http://malayalam.indiandrupal.com/

I'll be looking into how to integrate the above into the installer and have the translation for the core interface hosted in the d.o cvs

The files are in .txt as g.d.o does not allow any file to be uploaded
You can use any ftp manager to remove the .txt extension.

To whomever can contribute their time, please fill in the relevant words in Malayalam so that a translation effort can officially start. please comment on the thread.

Update: (Sep 2009)

To avoid issues with the Drupal trademark. indiandrupal.com has been disbanded. The contents of the Malayalam site has been moved to (deleted link) The i10n server can be accessed by registered website users but currently does not have translated strings. For downloading Malayalam translation pack please visit: http://drupal.org/project/ml

Update: (2008)
Sunil Kumar has made a lot of progress
http://malayalam.indiandrupal.com/ contains full and standalone packages of the Malayalam Translation of Drupal 6.
If you can contribute your time, please add details in your comment about what you can do/deliver to ensure the translation packs meet Drupal.org's coding/packaging standards.
The i10n translation server module is being configured on http://malayalam.indiandrupal.com to provide a web based interface to translate Drupal core and contributed modules) into Malayalam.
Translators, reviewers/editors are needed to ensure quality work.

How to start translation

Hey there Sunil, I don't

stevebayerin's picture

Hey there Sunil, I don't think there is a easy to follow step by step guide to create a new translation of the Drupal interface. I can however provide answers to any questions or doubts you may have.

in the .po files you can see

stevebayerin's picture

in the .po files you can see words such as

#: includes/common.inc:335 modules/system/system.admin.inc:1645
msgid "@site is currently under maintenance. We should be back shortly. Thank you for your patience."
msgstr ""

An example of a translated string is:

msgid "Malayalam"
msgstr "മലയാള"

As of now I haven't found out how to get the installer to recognize the files. Once both files have all the strings done, I'll apply for an official Malaylam translation (along with names of contributors of the translated strings who also are able to use CVS so that they can use the CVS of drupal.org.)

If its ok, I can keep track of number of strings translated by each person as a counter to display how much they have contributed to the translation effort. Every word counts.

Edit: The Malayalam translation support site isn't up yet (ma.webmediadx.com). If anyone can donate a url or subdomain please do since my current web host is very very unreliable lately.

For now please post strings by replying to this thread (instead of only in the file that are found in installer.po_.txt such as:

: install.php:111

msgid "Requirements problem"
msgstr ""

: install.php:201

msgid "Database configuration"
msgstr ""

Once enough strings are created, I'll look further into the process of having the installer recognize Malayalam as a language to install and having CVS access to have the language officially supported. Please post in the thread instead of only into the file so that everyone can recognize who is serious about translation and everyone can see which strings are translated and which are not.

You can also edit the wiki page at:
http://groups.drupal.org/node/13802 with the Malayalam words but that won't guarantee you will receive credit for adding the words.

Few .po files are completed and ready for review

sunilkumar's picture

Hi Steve and other members,

I completed translation (morethan 30%) for few .po files and my translation (completed and incompleted .po files) can be downloaded from http://sites.google.com/site/sunilkumarmbsite/.

Need your help to review my translation for consistency and correctness.

Please comment. Since it is a little long work, I decided to release it in halfway. Sorry :)

A detailed HOWTO is available here: http://vayanasala.blogspot.com/2008/10/translating-drupal.html
