Hey to all the SacDUG'ers who were meeting when I used to make the trip over the pass from Reno!
I spoke with Liz Harrison from Access Sacramento when she was in Denver for the Alliance for Community Media conference a few weeks ago. They are looking to get started with Drupal. There is a lot of activity around Drupal in the PEG (public, education, government) community. In Denver, we've been given a $380,000 Knight NewsChallenge grant to update the software that already drives the 3 public access channels run by Denver Open Media. That project is called the Open Media Project. In January, we will start implementing and supporting the Drupal 6 version of this code at 6 additional locations. Those locations are being selected based on what they can contribute as development partners. The goal being the collaborative development effort of 6 locations will result in a feature rich, well documented suite of modules that will be much easier for additional locations like Access Sacramento to leverage. While they won't need the Drupal experience the first 6 locations will need, Access Sacramento will need to understand the basics of Drupal.
I know this group has a number of heavy hitters, but I'm hoping someone will be willing to lead a few beginner focused meetups or a few of you would be willing to stop by the Access Sacramento offices and do a few demos and answer the questions they have.
The goal of the Open Media Project and push to leverage Drupal within PEG is to give the community more control over what airs. In Denver, anyone (who's a member) can contribute content that they either own or have the rights to air or that is licensed in a way that allows reuse like this Drupal Dojo screencast on OG Panels. Everything air at least once, so yes. Denver might be the first city to be conducting Drupal training available to anyone in the city with cable! If enough users give that show a positive rating (using Five star/Voting API), it will air more often. If that's something you'd like to see in Sacramento, please volunteer some time to help them get started with Drupal.
