Beginner's Workshop in Spokane - planning

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

As discussed at one or more of the last Spokane Drupal Group meetings, I've been thinking of putting on a Drupal Site Building for Beginners workshop.

Ideas:
- Use Drupal 7 (even though it might not be fully ready for complex sites, it seems like it would be lame to use Drupal 6 at this point)
- Topics: Installation, Blocks, Menus, Content types/fields, Views, Webforms, and maybe some other basics
- I have a curriculum I used for past similar workshops (Drupal 6) at http://poplarclass.com -- have used it twice myself, and others have used it too, works out fairly well. I would need to update it for Drupal 7.
- In the past I've taught it as a single all-day workshop, but students get a bit overwhelmed, so I think maybe 3 evenings would be better.
- I think it is good to charge a little bit for the workshop -- the two times we did it in Seattle, the time we charged, people actually showed up, which was a plus (when we didn't charge, only about half showed up, in spite of numerous reminders and requests to tell us if they couldn't make it so we could open up slots for other people).
- We would need about 2-3 volunteers at each session to help people work through difficulties, besides the person leading the workshop (which I would propose to do -- have done it quite a bit before).

Proposed dates:
Mondays: Sept 19, Sept 26, Oct 3
6:30 - 9 pm

Proposed location:
- option 1: Spokane Valley branch of Spokane County library - attendees would supply laptop and use wifi, we would need to supply a projector though. Could get room for free if we didn't charge more than $5 for the workshop; $50 per evening if we charged for the workshop.
- option 2: Moran Prairie (south hill) branch of Spokane County Library - attendees would supply laptop and use wifi, they have a projector, but it's kind of a ways out there (about 10-15 minutes from I-90). Same charge as option 1.
- option 3: Workforce Training center on W. end of Post Falls (near defunct outlet mall) - has computer lab with 16 workstations. Rental charge would be about $500 total.

My preference would be:
- option 1, except we would need a projector
- shoot for 15-20 attendees
- charge $10/person

Any thoughts?
a) Do those dates work out for people here who could help out? I would need a commitment from 2-3 people per evening (doesn't have to be the same people each date).
b) Does anyone have a computer projector (windows/linux -- NOT mac) that we could use for all three nights?
c) Any other comments?

We'd like to help you get some workshops going.

As a training company, we are trying to help groups get more members and attract new people. Is there a way we could help you make your Drupal Beginner Workshops a success?

Is there anything you need that we can provide? We do have some free tutorials on our site that may be helpful for you. Or we could actuall prepare some for you on topics you want to discuss. We could print some and send them to you to use as course material or handouts.

Let us know. We're dedicated to making Drupal and Open Source available to everyone, and if we would be very happy to help you with it in Spokane. Please let us know what we can do. We are open to suggestion.

I'm in Seattle, so I'll see your response in "real" time :)

Space/projector are main needs...

jhodgdon's picture

I've led this exact workshop twice (last two years in Seattle), and done presentations of similar content at camps many times, so the curriculum and delivery are not an issue... The main need I have for this workshop is to find a space to hold it in, and/or a projector to borrow, but if you are in Seattle, I expect you can't be of much help on that front?

I might be able to help with that. Not promising, but I have friends there. I'll contact them and see if I can do something.

Is there a rental company locally that might rent you a projector?

We can help with the projector.

I talked it over with Steve, and we'd be glad to cover the cost of the projector rental for you. None of my Spokane friends have responded regarding a meeting space, but I'll keep after them.

In the meantime, let me know if you'd like us to sponsor the projector for you and get me the details so I can get a final approval.

Cheers

Thanks for the offer...

I wasn't really looking for sponsors -- maybe doable... thanks for the offer! What are you looking for in return, if anything?

I would need the projector for three different days, and there seem to be several projector rental companies who cover Spokane at about $70-$100 per day.

It is probably simpler just to use the Moran Prairie library, which has a projector.

But I'm holding off on reserving the dates actually, because I may have a conflict. I should know within a week.

Training Space

Strong Solutions Conference & Training Room in a training room format holds 15 with laptops at tables, and 20-25 without tables. We have a projector and whiteboard mounted for use, along with a Mac mini connected to the projector (or you can bring your own laptop). Folks can also borrow the few demo Mac laptops we have, if needed. I don't charge non-profits for use of the space, and offer our Craven's Coffee blend.

We are closer to downtown Spokane (1718 E. Sprague), about 1.1 miles from Division or a 3 minute drive.

If we can help, please let me know.

Sounds ideal!

I'll contact you by email to see if this will work out. Sounds good!

Man all this activity today... now I guess I am the looser if I don't show up this time around! LOL

Not to worries z33k3r...it

Not to worries z33k3r...it was my idea to meet at the Forza Coffee shop and I missed the meet-up. I was kicking myself for missing it...my wife actually asked where I was going last Wed night and I said to meet some great fellow drupalers in the area. She said, um, you said that was Monday night that just past two days ago. I then put two and two together on why my Google Calender was yelling at me for the last couple days, it was because I never confirmed my event...agh!

I will make the next one for sure though....

Until then...happy Wednesday to everyone in the group!

It's official - volunteers needed!

Strong Solutions has generously offered space for this workshop, including a projector, so I went ahead and scheduled it! Registration and other details are coming soon (like as soon as I can get them worked out, probably later today), and will be posted here:

Which will also have a call for volunteers shortly (hint, hint)...
