I wanted to point out a theme that I have been using that already has some MIT-like appearance.

I have made very little modification to the theme's stylesheets; just enough to get rid of the burgundy header background color, and change the body background to white, and a few other tweaks.

IS&T Site at MIT
We are building a new version of MIT's IS&T website in Drupal. Site development is on-going and content migration will happen in the spring. For end users, I am building a custom theme based on html designs which pre-dated the use of Drupal as our CMS. For the admin theme, I used Garland and changed the colors to the MIT standard red and gray motif.
We are using Drupal 6.x
