User group meeting

Hey all,

Ok, we're a go! This has all come together very quickly, so hope lots of you can make it out!

When: 2pm, Sunday December 14th.
Where: Raincity Studios, 1 Alexander Street, Suite 400 in Gastown. (Buzz #400)

The plan is to work for a few hours at least and fix up the Fearless City website and get it all running smoothly again. If we have time, we'll add some new features as well, I'll be meeting with Scott Nelson at the end of the week to get the down low on what's wrong with the site currently, and some user feedback on additions they'd like.

If you don't know about Fearless City, check out their site, they're a great non-profit in the DTES.

We'll be doing things like cross-browser troubleshooting, module (and likely core) upgrades, theming tweaks, and some customization, so whatever your skills are come on out and we'll find something to put you to work on! If you're thinking "Oh, I'm too much of a newb to help out," put those thoughts out of your head! We'll need lots of help testing the site and new functionality, keeping things organized, etc. Plus this is also a social, so you're welcome to come and socialize too, as long as you remember the first few hours will be focused on the sprint.

Food is yet to be organized. If any lovely sponsors come out of the woodwork and want to buy us some pizzas or something, that'd be great! Otherwise, we may have to go potluck style and have everyone bring some snacks and drinks. I'm sure at least some people will head out for dinner afterwards too, and if someone wants to organize that more formally, you're more than welcome, just post the details here.

I'll try and get an outline of the work to be done posted up here a little ahead of time in case anyone wants to put dibs on some of the work.

Finally, please rsvp if you know you're coming so I can get an idea of how much wo/man power we're going to have.

Thanks and see you all soon!

Hoping I can make it

Boris Mann's picture

I've got a couple of things on the go that needs to be done, but ideally will drop in for a bit.

One question: if multiple people are going to be working on stuff, we need this to be in a code repository. Is the Fearless stuff in a code repository?

Also, we could do some work ahead of time on making it easy for people to prep for working on local copies...so sounds like I get to do some SVN training :P

Would be great to see you

Would be great to see you for a bit if you can make it! Will get all the pertinent info from Scott on Friday when I talk to him, and will ask him about that then. Definitely SVN would be a VERY good idea. :-)

If anyone else has any questions you'd like me to get answered, please post em!

I think I will try to come,

iainduncan's picture

I think I will try to come, barring any gigs. If I can make it, I could demonstrate functional testing with Twill. Twill is a python domain specific language for non-javascript functional tests, as well as being very handy for writing bots of all kinds. I use Twill with Nose ( an xUnit style test runner for python ) to make dead easy functional test suites and also install scripts for Drupal apps.
Come to think of it, that might make for an interesting demo. I'll make another post!

hey iain-- that'd be sweet

arianek's picture

hey iain--

that'd be sweet if you can make it. ya, you should pitch that stuff to dale for a meetup presentation or something! we're not gonna be doing demos and stuff at the sprint, it's all gonna be nitty gritty build stuff (unless there's something that you could test with it i spose). it's gonna be a lot more upgrades, bug fixing, adding modules, etc. for this, since it's an existing site.

hopefully will see you there!

Yeah I was thinking there

iainduncan's picture

Yeah I was thinking there might be some testing to do. Or setup automation or some such. Those tools are also really handy for setting up and testing staging/testing installs. I also use them with Paramiko, an ssh/sftp library for python. Good for making one touch synchronizers and so on.

See You There!

Fearless is really looking forward to this. We're doing a users panel this Saturday to gather feedback from participants who use the site all the time. Usability is key to the success of the website, especially with a user base facing so many challenges: public computers on which they can't change settings, visual challenges due to no corrective lenses, etc. Everything needs to be as easy to use as possible.

It's great to see the Drupal community support for our project. You guys are stars!

Count me in. Let me know if I can help with svn setup, etc.

Thanks
Audrey

Great Audrey, yes, thanks

arianek's picture

Great Audrey, yes, thanks for volunteering for that, I'll definitely let you know as soon as I have all the info, it would be great to have it set up ahead of time!

I'll try to make it

katbailey's picture

I do have an exam the next day but hopefully I'll be able to spare a few hours.

Ah, that's too bad, I hope

Ah, that's too bad, I hope so too!

Sounds good

Site Issues Wiki

arianek's picture

Just set up a wiki to manage issues for the sprint - have a look, you might want to put dibs and do some research ahead of time! FYI, the wiki is only visible to logged in members of the Vancouver group. http://groups.drupal.org/node/17367

I would highly recommend the

aufumy's picture

I would highly recommend the use of an issue queue system.

If using Drupal, a single cck content type 'issue' would be an improvement.
There is also a module called storm that may be helpful.

If not in Drupal there is trac, unfuddle (limited free or paid).

I second the Trac reco,

iainduncan's picture

I second the Trac reco, which I think is a better plan than putting in the drupal site itself. Trac is easy to set up, has great version control integration, built in wiki, and an extremely flexible ticket system.

Audrey and Iain-- I just set

arianek's picture

Audrey and Iain--

I just set up (with the help of the lovely Audrey) accounts on the server so you can have shell access. I think I'm going to try and leave it be just the three of us having access so we don't have too many people in there...

Scott had installed Redmine on the server, but hadn't had time to set it up, so if one of you can figure that out, we could use it. I set up an Unfuddle account, but hadn't added any tickets to it yet, so feel free to go ahead and set up trac.

As long as we have SVN we'll be cool, but we can only use free versions unless someone wants to donate $$ for it.

I'll leave the decision on what to use up to you two, just let me know when something's up and running and I'll toss all the tickets in.

Email coming with server login info...

I set up the svn and trac

iainduncan's picture

I set up the svn and trac install, so we have issue tickets, trac wiki, and version control with source browsing. I believe Ariane will be doing the user access management for trac?

Iain

Awesome work Iain!

SVN and Ticketing accounts, Skype chat

arianek's picture

Looks like we're probably going to use the stuff that Iain installed last night, but just as a side note, I actually got a reply from Unfuddle today and they did donate a month of corporate level account for the sprint, so big thanks to them. We assumed it wasn't going to happen so set everything up, and unless there's a good reason anyone can put forward why we SHOULD use Unfuddle instead of Trac/SVN installed on the server, we probably won't end up using it, but wanted to say thanks to them anyway for being rad!

That said, if you know you're coming to the sprint, please send me a message through my contact form containing the username/pw you want to use for SVN and our Ticketing system, as well as your Skype username if you have one and we'll get you set up with accounts and I'll add you to the Skype chat for the sprint. Then you can get your local set up if you so desire before hand.

Oh, and remember to sign up if you know you're going to make it! Thanks :-)

I'm in!

rsexton404's picture

Sounds like a great project. I'll be there with (sleigh) bells on.

Hey everyone, Irwin from

arianek's picture

Hey everyone,

Irwin from Fearless City has kindly offered to hook us up with some snacks tomorrow, so make sure to say a big thanks to him!

Sinuses be damned, I'll be seeing you all tomorrow for as long as I can stay verticle!

:-)

Snow report

arianek's picture

Considering there's a couple inches of snow sticking downtown, and it's supposed to continue all night, I'm not sure what we'll be waking up to out there tomorrow... If it's looking really impassable by lunchtime, I will be sure to post any news/contingency plan up here!

Full speed ahead!

arianek's picture

Hey all, looks like the roads are melting off pretty steadily so hopefully everyone will be able to make it in! Definitely not bad enough out there to call it off. :-)

In case you missed it ...

I wrote a preview post on Raincity Studios blog - will hope to get a post-event write-up too.

Thanks for that Dave :-)

arianek's picture

Thanks for that Dave :-) I've got the best of intentions of writing up a wrap post (though admittedly still dragging cause of being sick), but I'll let you know if I get it done anytime soon and you can x-post it.
