Planning of October Drupal meetup

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

For the October Drupal meetup, I suggest we have more discussions.

Can we have one advanced group and one beginner group?
The suggested topic for the advanced group is "high performance web sites",
does anybody have a topic for the beginner group?

I don't have any suggestions yet for the beginner group, but how about a business group?
I already have a mini discussion going among my Drupal peers on the topic of "What's stopping enterprises from adopting Drupal on a large scale?" which I thought is something worthy of interest.

I have another suggestion for the advanced group - "Drupal in the cloud". I am happy to share my own experiences on this front.

Great idea

That's great, azhan.
Would you like to organize something like that?
All we need is a time, date and venue.

One member is from a big electronics shop company and mentioned that their function room in the company headquarter could be utilized for a drupal meetup. Do you think we should check with them, or do you have any other suggestions for a venue?

Smartspace

Hi Sven, we can look at SmartSpace, at Waterloo Centre, they have a event space which we can borrow. The owner, Michael I believe you spoke to him before yeah?

We could also talk with

We could also talk with Smartspace and see if they can provide a permanent venue for free, and also look at other possible venues - for now we have reserved the first Tuesday every month at Hackerspace till the end of the year.

I'm sure we can come up with some beginner topic. Let's give it some time - there's been quite some beginners lately, and we should do something to make them more involved. I'm not so sure if they would like to talk enterprise...
Maybe the enterprise discussion would work well as a breakout session at the DrupalCamp?

Hello drupal

For beginners, there is always the hello drupal workshop which can be introduced to new drupal enthusiasts, we do have the curriculum from acquia training and we can run it if interested.

I second Azhan's suggestion.

I second Azhan's suggestion. Both the advanced and for the enterprises. :)

Enterprise discussion

Does anybody have a story to share at such an enterprise meetup about
a time when the client either couldn't be convinced or they
managed to convince the client to use drupal?

For me, dicussing solutions is more important than talking about problems.

Maybe it's better to focus on
"How can we make enterprises adopt Drupal on a large scale"?

And it's nice that since we go to meetups and we know each other quite well
if we can introduce ourselves by name if it's not obvious from our d.o username :)

Sven, imho not all of us have

azhan.moin's picture

Sven, imho not all of us have had the privilege of engaging large enterprises.. well at least speaking for myself :)

(sorry to double post, I want this to go into the right thread)

With the limited exposure I was asked some questions which I don't have the answer to, valid concerns which does impact wide adoption of Drupal and open source technologies generally in very large enterprises for mission critical systems.

I am saying this more in the Singapore context, this issue may likely not exist in regions where Drupal expertise is abundant.

Once we know what are the main concerns, easy to focus on discussing and sharing what solutions are out there to each of them. But yes I agree the end goal is really about "How can we make enterprises adopt Drupal on a large scale?"

It sounds like you have some

svenryen's picture

It sounds like you have some ideas about what kind of clients you want
to approach - even if you can't share everything, can we challenge you
to share a bit about your situation at the meetup
as an intro that can open up the discussion
(of course without revealing too much about your business strategies)?

Beginner topics

azhan.moin's picture

Easiest if the beginner topics are suggested by beginners. just imho...

That's right - if we have

svenryen's picture

That's right - if we have beginners here, don't be shy.
Now you have the chance to get more people together and talk about precisely the Drupal problem that's keeping you awake at the moment.

I suggested "bring/share and explore/solve your Drupal headaches and issues together" though it's up to anybody to suggest something else

here's some ideas...

azhan.moin's picture

not totally sure if these topics are still considered as non-beginners but here goes:

  • Cache is evil: the many faces of caching hell in Drupal (and how to stop them from causing you grief)
  • White Screen Of Death(WSOD): 101 ways to get there (and how to fix it)
  • I am a fresh convert from dot net and I love Microsoft IIS, but Drupal doesn't work on it? Making the best of IIS with Drupal

Maybe here's what we can

svenryen's picture

Maybe here's what we can do..

If I set up the agenda like this:

a) Beginners - share and explore/solve your Drupal headaches and issues together
b) Advanced - high performance web sites
c) Business - How can we make enterprises adopt Drupal on a large scale?

Then somehow people join the discussion they prefer, or move between
the three groups if they get too bored :)

If this works well, we could continue putting up a topic for each of the 3 areas
every meetup. Then we leave it up to those who arrive to take action
in engaging and taking part in the discussions. And.. if we can't finish by
the end of the night - there's always the option to continue next time
