Who wants to get together for Drupal, Dinner, Drinks, etc?

I don't know the area but I do have a car. so I need someone to recommend something cool that I wouldn't find on my own.

Who's in?

Hi Doug,

Welcome to Hampton Roads - hope your trip is going well so far.

I'd be happy to hook up for a drink if you have a free evening. I hope other local Drupal folks can meet up as well.

As far as cool stuff to do while you're here, you may want to consider:

  • Here in downtown Hampton, the Virginia Air and Space Center http://www.vasc.org/ is dedicated to flight - especially the military - and space travel. Lots of planes to check out. VASC also has an IMAX theatre http://www.vasc.org/imax/nowshowing.html that has just "gone digital". We've always enjoyed seeing films there. The museum is best for daytime, while the IMAX theater has afternoon and evening shows.
  • Also in Hampton is Fort Monroe http://www.hampton.gov/fort_monroe/. The actual stone-built fort (complete with moat) is open to tourists via the Casemate museum. I sometimes yawn during museum trips but this one held my attention. Daytime hours only.
  • Newport News is close by, and the Mariner's Museum http://www.marinersmuseum.org/ is quite good. If you enjoy maritime interests they displays are beautiful, and you can get a glimpse of the USS Monitor's turret that was recovered a few years ago. Daytime hours.
  • If you enjoy the scary side of Halloween and have a night free, you may want to check out "Howl-O-Scream" http://www.howloscream.com/Williamsburg/homepage.aspx at Busch Gardens. They really pull out all the stops for this event and it is pretty cool. Once you get on I-64 East it's about a 20-30 minute drive and you can't miss the signs. I think it opens at 6:00 PM. Evening hours (of course).
  • If you'd like to have a very good seafood dinner while in town, the Surf Rider http://www.surfridergroup.com/Blue%20Water.html is worth checking out. We recommend the crab-cake dinner. Make sure you have good directions as the restaurant is on the water and you need to take a couple of backstreets to get to it. Open afternoons and evenings.
  • I hope these suggestions are helpful. Feel free to call or email.
