database management
Can anyone recommend some good references for managing databases?
What kind of management?
I use Navicat Premium. It can manage MySQL, SQLite, Oracle, PostgreSQL and MSSQL. This costs a little bit, but it is really powerful. For instance, if you create a Drupal site using sqlite and want to convert it to MYSQL, Navacat can connect to both at the same time and migrate both the structure and the data from any database type to another. You can also schedule certain tasks like backup, sync (even between different database types), reporting etc. The full, premium version seems a little expensive, but, if you have the need, it sure saves a lot of time.
I know of no other tool that is as versatile.
If you just want to create databases and control users and privileges in MySQL, either PHPMyAdmin or MySQL Workbench will do the trick. These are both free.
More of a general reference
I'm looking for more of a general reference.
I'm using phpMyAdmin now, but I would like to understand it better.
For example, let's say I'm looking at my drupal database in phpMyAdmin, and I see that that search_index has -75,589 records.
or let's say, I see that watchdog has 10,034 records.
Is that bad? Should I do something about it? Is this a problem?
That's the kind of reference book / website / wiki that I would like to see.
MySQL groups
MySQL groups might provide the advice you seek on finding resources to manage MySQL.
Meetup.com
http://mysql.meetup.com/ a list of groups around the country
http://www.meetup.com/seattlemysql/ next mtg in Seattle Dec-5
Drupal MySQL group
http://groups.drupal.org/mysql
IRC channel for MySQL
irc://freenode/mysql <--this URI hot links if your browser has a plugin like ChatZilla for FireFox
also available: http://webchat.freenode.net/ (doesn't require an IRC client)
otherwise, fire up your favorite IRC client and /join #mysql via freenode.net
If your database issue is Drupal related, e.g. the Watchdog table, the Drupal group would be your best resource.
thanks1
Those sound like good places to look!
co-working at Zoka, need help!
Hey Drupal users,
I am hoping to get some help/mentorship/consulting on my website that is managed using the Drupal CMS during the Co-working hours. The website is www.winecouture.com. It was built on a contract that is now over and I need some help understanding a few things. As someone who has no developer experience and a boot-strapper budget, I could really use the help. I will be there at Zoka coffee at 3:30. Can anyone confirm that they will be there?
Cheers,
Andrew
