Hello? Anybody here?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Just wanted to say hello. I guess this is a new group. Am a librarian so I thought it apt to join this group.

Check out drupalib

Nice to see a libraries group. You should also check out http://drupalib.interoperating.info/ ("A place for library drupallers to hang out"). There isn't a lot of activity, but there's some.

Great to see how you're

Great to see how you're using Drupal for libraries, Mark and James. Here in the Portland area, NW Central is using it as a clearinghouse of CE resources for libraries. I posted a bit of impatience at how little activity is going on in there (and at drupalib) but that was misplaced. Libraries are a different sort of clients - I don't know how to describe it - but we do use technologies well, I think. I've been using Drupal for three months, mostly for personal use and volunteer testing for some organizations, and I've been enjoying tinkering with it.

There was a contrib module called LibDB (http://drupal.org/node/9427) that could do many of the features that LibraryThing does but is no longer being maintained. Don't know why. The developer is still an active participant in some Drupal groups and I've been meaning to ask him why. I have downloaded that old module and hope to see if I can do something with the code. I hope to do this as soon as I've settled with a project management responsibility (graduate assistantship really) to start this month in Emporia, Kansas (PhD program to start in the Fall). [Didn't work out. Am back in Portland.] Have not really planned on going to a doctoral program in LIS at this point but I don't know what to do either with my stack of rejection letters from almost a hundred library jobs I have applied to. Weird. There's so much talk about Web 2.0 in the library world but library HR departments or hiring managers don't seem to be looking for people who have the abilities to make it alive in libraries.

I would like our library to

I would like our library to join the drupal bandwagon (for the intranet, however I would love to eventually use it for the public web) It's not going over well with IT. Has anyone else experienced this?

hi all. thanks for creating this group for libraries. I've been using drupal for about 2 years now and am glad to see it's starting to be incorporated into libraries. this group and the drupalib site could be good places to share ideas, and get support. Here are a couple of projects for which I'm currently using drupal:

We're letting an LIS class at UMich use our radical reference site next term to analyze drupal and modules that could be of use to libraries.

I'd really like to see libraries (analog CMS's after all!) fully utilize drupal. We're already seeing some good projects like WPOpac using word press to display the OPAC. Libraries need to use these 2.0 technologies to better support our users and give added functionality to the content and services that we already have. How's about a librarything module?!

We're currently using Drupal to create what our director has coined a (Free) Integrated Search Handler.

Basically, we have put our system's MARC records in to Drupal, indexed the site with IBM Omnifind and are using Drupal as our search interface. From here, we are allowing our students to write bookreviews from books they find in the collection and providing links back and forth between the bookreviews and the book record.

Beyond that, our libraries can also leverage the power of Drupal by creating calendars, adding links, news stories, etc. We have also created a module that lets us manage which subscription databases that our libraries subscribe to and mitigates their access to those databases.

I will post more about this soon, as I would really like to get some input from fellow library drupallers.

From MARC to Drupal, sounds great

This sounds very interesting - would you post more info how you did the conversion from MARC to Drupal (content types, I suppose) ?
There has bees some discussion on how to import MARC data to Drupal (http://drupal.org/node/128168) but as far as I know, no practical implementations yet.

MARC to Drupal in Fish4Info.org

cgharris's picture

Hello,

I am the director austinone referenced for the Fish4Info.org project. A few quick updates on the project:
1) austinone wrote a MARCImport module that we are in the final stages of cleaning up for upload. It takes a MARC record and parses it out into database tables in a pretty customizable fashion.
2) we ditched Omnifind and are now just creating Drupal nodes for each of the records in our catalog. This means that subject headings, series names, and authors can be created as taxonomies to allow further browsing. The books/etc. being nodes also makes it much easier to fully integrate our expanded bookreview module, Amazon images, and much more. We are using the Drupal search.module for now, but are closely following fuzzy.search faceted search and other possibilities.
3) we will be presenting on this at the New York Library Association conference in late October and will be releasing the full project code at that time (need to get things cleaned up).

Austinone will be posting more very soon (on vacation this week), but I wanted to respond quickly in hopes of jump starting this library group. Part of austinone's job duties this year will include being more active on this group, posting the library modules we have developed, the fish4info project, and otherwise being a good drupaller!
