Hello my fellow Drupalists,
At the last meetup I demoed a Drupal based payroll webapp that I was working on for a while but never got around to officially launching. It was either frazras or varunity that pointed out that this is a mistake that too much of us make: building and not releasing stuff to see what people think.
Well this time around I'm throwing caution to the wind and hoping for the best. I just released a Drupal powered webapp and Facebook App called GoSMS (http://www.gosmsapp.com/). The webapp allows you to send bulk text messages for 2¢. The Facebook app allows users to send free Ad supported text messages (http://apps.facebook.com/gosmsfb/).
The main focus right now is the Facebook App. The plan is to leverage the interested gained there to push the site. I need all the help I can get to test out the Facebook app. For anyone interested I can go over some points on how its all built at the next meetup.

Firstly I have to complement the design, I love the new age web2.0 look. The usability is good and its general work flow. I only had one bug report, the export didnt seem to work. I had 1 contact which was my number.
This idea isn't new, I had done up a site like this before (a little less elegant), but you realize there is no link between the real buyers and the project. Right now its in a READY_FI_TOUCH_DI_ROAD status. To get this working you may need to have to invest some funds in allowing people to send free text or integrate the "email to text" as a free version because right now you will need users.

Thanks for feedback frazras, I'm fixing the export bug as we speak. I realize its critical to build up awareness about the app so that's why I built out the Facebook app from the get-go. The Fb app allows you to send 10 free message per day and I'm actively advertising it to grow the user base. Also trying to get some advertisers on-board to help subsidise the cost of those messages: http://www.gosmsapp.com/advertise. Keep the feedback coming!

Thanks sigismo. If you didn't see the Fb app would you still feel the webapp is targeting Jamaica? If so, let me know what aspects on the webapp focus on Jamaica.
Its actually destination agnostic so if there's anything that speaks to Jamaica specifically I'll have to remove it. The Fb app is limited to Jamaica mainly because I have to focus on an initial set of advertisers to target, but eventually will also be open to all.

Hi,
I'm new to drupal, and interested in using it to build a web app, can you tell me how you managed to build such an amazing web app using drupal as a development tool?
Love the idea of running the fb app and the web app simultaneously. I think it could work even well if you added a mobile version too. (if you have the fund/ability to build it).

Using Drupal as a development
Using Drupal as a development framework saves me so much time I really don't know how I would be able to build some of the things I have while working on client projects otherwise.
Core offers some invaluable components such as the menu/permission system, user management, DB/Schema layer, theming and a ton of others. Then there are contrib modules like Views, Panels, Context, Features, Domain, Rules that allow me to focus on things that are specific to what I'm trying to build while they handle problems that have been solved before.
If you're just planning to build normal sites with Drupal then you don't have to know much about the nuts and bolts (I still have SOOO much to learn) but if you're planning to use it to build web apps start messing around with the APIs of some of the modules I mentioned above.
Regarding the mobile aspect for GoSMS; I couldn't build a site that's sending messages to mobile phones and not have some mobile support. Resize your browser for any page on the marketing site (www.gosmsapp.com) and you'll see some basic responsive work that I did. I'm working on the app side now. In about a month I'll also be opening up a basic API to select customers (thank you Services) so native apps may be in the pipeline.

@trevor - Thanks for pointing out the limitation with list management. Instead of creating sub-lists as you had suggested I've added Free Tagging to contacts that should allow for more flexibility. Tags are created automatically when you enter a comma-separated list or you can add them manually on the Tags page and select from the autocomplete. Tags can be added directly to each contact of during import. You can then filter your contacts with tags when sending to your list.
