Another topic
Another topic suggestion:
Drupal For SEO
Drupal for SEO is good
Harley, I think Drupal for SEO is a good topic.
Hi All
Thank You, Harley and cisliu for the great work and suggestions so far. My name is Gilbert, I've been working with Drupal for about 2 years now, as Team Leader of 6 developers/programmers(currently). For the purpose of this meetup(The first one I will be attending in person), I'm good with the topic suggested so far, And below are some suggestions of topic based on our experience with Drupal and Other CMS.
Drupal as far as we can tell bypass all the CMS out there especially for solo developer. However we've found that trying to have 2 or more people to work on a single projects become very challenging. Thus I would expect to share with and learn from the community about something like "Drupal Efficiency In Teamwork". But I understand that is too big a topic to be discussed in a 10 min presentation and perhaps we may try later having special meetup for such topics.
Another issue we have faced in our Drupal experience is that, there is a lot of resources for developers, but most of them are impractical for customer(not site admin) who actually have their site built with Drupal. The So Powerful Drupal Admin Interface is very confusing for customers. Thus another topic that may be very interesting for business would be something like "Improving Customers Relationship for Drupal Based Site"
Looking forward to read from you all,
Gratitude

Gilbert thanks for the great
Gilbert thanks for the great and ideas and suggestions for some topcis.
I like the idea for having a discussion on group development both from different perspectives. One key point is the importance of properly setting expectations.
Looking forward to seeing you next weekend.

PoidsTotal, those are great
PoidsTotal, those are great topics. I think for the admin issue perhaps serving up a simplified admin interface for clients may be an option.
I'd be interested to see if and how people have worked in teams, local and distributed, to create a single Drupal site. But maybe next time? I'm in Sydney and won't be back for this meet. :p
I'm also interested in multisites and whether anyone's used them as a base install for several sites.
I agree, a menu in a block
I agree, a menu in a block (displayed below the footer if there's no where else in the theme for it) with links to common tasks and maybe a couple of tailored views pretty much solves the complexity of admin problem for customers.
My largest team so far has been five, but only two of us touching the code and even then working on very separate bits of functionality.
re: multisites -- yes, I use them a lot. The disadvantage is although the upgrades go quicker, testing the upgrades and if need be rolling back is less straightforward.

This is great!!
1) Improving Customers Relationship for Drupal Based Site
2) Drupal Efficiency In Teamwork
3) Multisites
all are great topics in my humble opinion and love to attend/contribute in such special topic meetups if time suits.
Sounds like it's going to be
Sounds like it's going to be an interesting meet this time. I hope I can make it.
Do we all agree on these 3
Do we all agree on these 3 topics?
If so, can we put a 'champion' to kind of lead the conversation by:
1 - Presenting the problem as why the wanted the topic.
2 - Discuss how they cope with it today.
3 - Moderate discussion in the group.
I would say the person who suggested should be this person so I have listed names below.
Please note if your topic requires a computer or just discussion.
If you do not plan to attend or do not want this role, please speak up.
I would also like to set a time 'boundary' of 20 to 30 min per topic. If the conversation wants to continue we can tabe for after the other topics. Do we agree?
1) Improving Customers Relationship for Drupal Based Site moderated by PoidsTotal
2) Drupal Efficiency In Teamwork moderated by PoidsTotal
3) Multisites moderated by mdryan
Do we expect that everyone there will know what Drupal is? If not perhaps a 10-15 min intro.
I see the signups only show (5) please share the count of people that are coming with you. This is a new venue and we did not reserve a space. So 5 is a number we can manage, but if 15 then we will need to inform the venue and perhaps arrange a monitor or projector.
Thanks for all the awesome ideas!
multisite
Am happy to moderate a session, but is there really any interest in a discussion on muliti-site?
Technical aspects are discussed here: http://drupal.org/documentation/install/multi-site
Use cases: microsites, development boxes
That's about it isn't it?
I think that multi-sites is a
I think that multi-sites is a bit dry or dev heavy -- perhaps can be a smaller part of 4) When and why to use Drupal 何时使用Drupal合适
or another topic?
My Opinion about Multisite is
My Opinion about Multisite is similar to the precedings ones, I think instead of laying down drupal's techinical breathroughts on multisites(already fully covered in much advanced ressources) we may do better sharing expiriences on project situtation. I would be very interested learning about:
1- What problem did you face and used multisite solutions
2- Are there other alternatives to solve the problem
3- How well did drupal multisite feature solve the problem compared to alternative solutions
4- What are the dowside of multisite based on your experience
5- etc
I think we should ask, 1 -
I think we should ask,
1 - How many of us can contribute to this conversation from a past experience basis?
2 - For those that have not used multi-site, are they interested to listen and discuss?
Agenda?
I'm confused. Originally this was the proposed agenda:
1 - Self Introductions.
2 - 10 min Lighting Round - Presentation No. 1 (cisliu: Using CMS Tool Drupal)
3 - 10 min Lighting Round - Presentation No. 2 (hyperglide: Drupal For SEO)
4 - 10 min Lighting Round - Presentation No. 3
5 - Free Discussion / Open Topics
6 - Conclusion
Seems like the suggestion is that 4) and 5) are combined into (up to) three 20-30 minute moderated discussions on a topic. This is certainly fine by me and I think probably works better.
hyperglide suggested combining a discussion of multi-site with "When and why to use Drupal" (何时使用Drupal合适) but I can't see how this would work as this is one of seven parts to cisliu's 10 min presentation and this could be the basis of a several hour discussion without touching on multi-site installs at all. I do agree though that it needn't be a dry topic and a discussion could focus on the use case and alternatives since it's hardly technically difficult to implement. Mind, I'm not sure what's wrong with something being "dev heavy" either though.
I agree with Harley's criteria though for what to discuss (1) how many can contribute and (2) how many people are interested in the discussion. Personally then:
Improving Customers Relationship for Drupal Based Site (1) Sure, and so can everyone else who's ever built a (Drupal) site for someone else (2) Whilst what I've done has worked OK I'd be interested to see what approaches others use here. Of the suggestions this probably appeals the most.
Drupal Efficiency In Teamwork (1) Not much beyond the obvious of making use of a decent vcs and ticketing system. I don't think I have anything to contribute that is particularly Drupal specific. (2) It doesn't really affect me most of the time and I'm not sure I really understand the problem tbh, or at least not why this is any harder with Drupal than with anything else. If anything I think Drupal is better suited for multiple developers than some of the alternatives. I'd suggest delaying a discussion on this though until sypl can make it if he's also interested in the discussion. This could probably be split into multiple topics and form the focus of a future session (which I think was PoidsTotal's original idea anyway)
Multi-site (1) Well I guess I have the experience to talk about it, answer questions, suggest pitfalls, but (2) it's not a topic that holds much interest for me.
Any other suggestions for topics for discussion?
Multisite is something I just
Multisite is something I just threw in there, you don't have to talk about it. Looks like I'm the only one interested anyway :p I won't be there this time anyway, so.
Using Drupal’s in-built multi-site feature with different domain
An interesting article on -- http://www.bluesparklabs.com/blog/architecting-multi-country-site-drupal-7
confusion and a little summary??
Wow, this is great discussion.
For me personally, I'm ready to contribute the topic I suggested if needed w/o the 7), which is too much to squeeze into a 10-mins talk. But again, my topic is targeted to Drupal newbies, if most people attending know Drupal pretty well, it is unnecessary.
I'm also ready to listen to whatever other interesting topics being presented.
I would ask that all people
I would ask that all people vote today on their topics of choice. Then we can summarize and have our agenda set, giving people presenting 1 week to prepare themselves.
For me I vote for:
1 - Drupal Efficiency In Teamwork moderated by PoidsTotal
2 - Site Architecture - Considerations when starting a Drupal project and how to organize your project - CisLiu
3 - Drupal SEO - Yours truly
Are these topics for a
Are these topics for a discussion or a short presentation? Or both?
Are these topics for a
Are these topics for a discussion or a short presentation? Or both?
Both -- 10 min Presentations
Both -- 10 min Presentations followed by 10 min discussions. Target time per topic is 20 to 30 min.. so the meeting does not carry on all day.
If people want to talk more after, we can!
Abstain!
Looking at the list of topics I can't say any of them leap out as particular favourites but will come along and take part no matter which are chosen.
A little comments!
First, Harley, a little comment on what you posted
"2 - Site Architecture - Considerations when starting a Drupal project and how to organize your project - CisLiu"
I leave this part as more of a open discussion instead of me presenting because I'm not 100% confident that my practice is the standard. However, I can share how I do it though.
I'm fine with the other two topics, i.e. #1 and #3.
Second, I'll throw in some topics I like to learn but cannot contribute yet for the July meetup. I know, its a little early but I guess early planning is usually better so that people can schedule their time for it. I'm looking at July 14, Saturday. Ok, here're some topics I would love to learn but cannot contribute yet:
1) how to simplify the admin interface for clients. I think it is simple and intuitive enough for my current project but people who are supposed to use it do not think so. They say its too complicated. :(
2) from PSD to a good working Drupal theme, i.e. the best workflow from the presenter's perspective.
OK, that's my 2 cents.
See you guys around.
@all Thank you for the
@all Thank you for the remarks.
Next saturday's topics:
1 - Drupal Efficiency In Teamwork moderated by PoidsTotal
2 - Site Architecture - Considerations when starting a Drupal project and how to organize your project - CisLiu (open discussion)
3 - Drupal SEO - Yours truly
@cisliu - I think it is early to pick July dates and from previous conversation it was discussed alternating weekend and weekday meetups each month. Allowing people that cannot attend weekends to join in also and visa-versa.
Let us wait to set a day please till the people that come to the meetups are at the meetup.
Hi HyperGlide Seems like
Hi HyperGlide
Seems like you've missed part of my comment earlier. Regarding this topic, we are struggling in our team to find a good method and we haven't workout anything worth sharing yet. So we have almost nothing to share about the topic. But if anyone has experience with this, we will be very pleased to learn from. So I'm OK with moderated if someone actually have some experience with it. Otherwise we may better cancel for now and set it for next meetup.
