Hey again people, just wondering if anyone's aware of a more user friendly method for controlling the menu item weight (sort order) when creating or editing a node.
The current method involves setting the number weight from a drop down, but how does an editor know the exact weight of the other items in the menu to accurately position the menu item. Am I missing something obvious here (it's happened before!).
Perhaps not show the weight controller, and then after the user selects the parent, a widget of the sibling menu items is shown, and a re-order drag and drop widget (like what's used for the admin menu builder tool) is displayed for collecting the weight.
Has something been done like this before? Thanks.

Menu Browser, Menu Weight Assist
I know of two modules trying to tackle this issue:
- Menu Weight Assist (unsupported and 6.x only)
- Menu Browser
Hadn't had the opportunity (or a pressing need) to test them in production though.
There might be more, menu utilities is one of areas with the worst module sprawl.
Thanks Drave. Menu weight
Thanks Drave.
Menu weight assist can definitely "assist", but it's probably a bit too techy for a non web savey user.
Menu Browser looks very interesting. I've just tested it out, and it pretty much does what I want. It kind of sucks that it uses it's own set of icons, different to Drupal, but that's probably themeable anyway. I think this module is close enough, and warrants not trying to create something similar, thanks!
Agree about your comment that menus have the worst module sprawl.. I'm ironically kind of responsible for one of those, being the auto_menutitle module, but nothing existed at the time!
